My father always said that he wanted to remember them as alive so never
viewed the corpse. I follow this rule.

Yep, when my beautiful nephew was killed at 15 in an ATV accident he was pretty
torn up, they did open the casket at the end for those who wanted to see him, I
would never have wanted to see him that way and have never been sorry I didn't.

I've heard about and am sorry about your nephew. To me a "viewing" is
just an odd and very old custom.

When I was 17 a friend I went to high school with was killed in a
head-on collision when a large truck crossed the line on a country road.
I'm sorry to phrase it this way, but no amount of makeup can put
humpty dumpty back together again. Fortunately her family did not opt
for an open casket.

That was the first and only funeral I attended until my parents died. I
refused to go to any others. I knew other people, of course,
co-workers, etc. who died over the years.

There is a man (local well known house painter, actually) who did a lot
of work around the house for my parents (Dad). He actually helped me a
lot when I was moving and getting settled in, recommending movers, etc.
He rang the bell and apologized to me for not attending my parents
funerals. He just doesn't *do* funerals. Believe me, I understood.

Yes, to me a simple get together at someones home or hall or whatever later
on when people aren't so raw works. I see that more and more people are
doing that these days, no funeral director organizing things trying to
extract more money from the bereaved.
