Default Musty smelling dried herbs

Has anyone here ever had this happen?

Some years back I bought a large container of Italian seasoning at Costco.
It had a very musty smell to it and the taste was so terrible that I had to
dispose of it. We could not eat anything made with it because it tasted bad.
I did notice that it said "Northern Italian" on the label. I had not noticed
this when I bought it. I perhaps wrongly assumed this was the problem.

More recently I had the same experience with some oregano. I now buy only
those labeled as "Greek" or "Mexican". No more problems. Until...

I opened a new container of thyme. It smelled musty. I couldn't really
remember what thyme was supposed to smell like. I was making soup. I put in
only a pinch but it seemed to give the soup an off flavor. I added more
herbs and that seemed to help somewhat.

Bought a different brand of thyme and there is clearly a difference to the
aroma.

In no case did the herbs look moldy. But... Could they have gotten moldy and
then dried? Not sure what the problem was.

The line at our Costco to return stuff is almost always out the door. No way
would I be bothered to wait in such a long line for something that likely
cost me $5. That's why.

With 'service' like that, why shop there at all?
Rhetorical question, no answer required.

It's a cheap place to buy things. And you can get large quantities. I shop
there weekly and there are usually no problem. Or at least no more than
anywhere else that I shop. I did get expired meat there. I have gotten or
seen expired stuff pretty much everywhere. I also purchased something as a
gift that was recalled well after the fact. And then there were then rotten
onions. Pretty much same all over.

Did you really believe that the line is 'always' out the door? The
good news is that the floor sweeping is done by machine instead of a
scary man with a broom

It's a membership big box store that sells quality items. As you say,
your experience follows you from store to store.

Okay, there isn't a Costco near where I live now. I was given a gift
card some years ago when Costco opened in Cordova, TN. I didn't have to
be a member, didn't have to "check in" when I walked in the door. I
didn't encounter a mad sweeper in a turban (surely that was another
store?). Granted, I only went there twice. But I sure never saw a line
out the door for anything, much less returns. Obviously a gross
exaggeration.

I wonder how long she'd stand in line for some (guaranteed to plug you
up) nachos with gloppy cheese dip?

His name was Pig Pen and it was a cloud of dirt that surrounded him.

You're thinking about that guy from 'lil Abner who had a perpetual cloud
over his head. Gloom and dispair.

Al Capp, great cartoonist:

Or maybe I'm thinking of something from Hee-Haw like this:

I don't know why but my father thought that show was very funny. That's
why I stayed in my room and read books.

It is out the door. But remember, not all of those people are returning
stuff. Some are renewing memberships. Some are getting new ones.

But you said, therefore implying that everyone is returning shoddy
merchandise, "The line at our Costco to return stuff is almost always
out the door. No way would I be bothered to wait in such a long line
for something that likely cost me $5."
People dealing with membership stuff have no reason to wait in the
return line. Memberships are an entirely different spot at the
counter.

I had some tiny web building insects or arthropods in my bottle of dried marjoram once. Whole big bag I had was infected! Had to get new dried marjoram, that fixed it.

I don't think she even realizes it. It appears her fingers type one
thing when she really meant something completely different. All that
diet soda must be fogging her brain.

If there *were* such long lines no one would ever shop at Costco.

Ours actually divided up into 3 sections recently, adding a register
or two dedicated to those who received notice of the large frozen
veggies/products recall.

Ha! At times, at some stores the lines to pay are that long. Not all stores
and not all the time.

I shop at Gerrity's Sure Save and have never seen anything expired. YEARS of shopping, full cart weekly.

How many people do you feed if you have a full cart weekly?
