Today was the dance recital. One of the ballet teachers was wearing a knee
length black dress, black pumps and sheer black hosiery. I will say that she does not normally dress in fashions that are the norm for this area or even this era. Although she is close to my age, just slightly older by a year or two... She seems to be stuck in the 60's in terms of dress. Some of what she wears is sort of Jackie O, but she is also very fond of animal prints. I also encountered an elderly person in the bathroom who had on open toed Orthopedic type sandals and she had some strangely colored hose that was thick. Perhaps compression hose. But I saw countless women walk by me with bare legs and no hose. So I guess some people here do wear it but not very many. I also suspect that teacher would not have worn the hose had she not had to walk out on stage. She is short and I know how they operate there. Legs that are dressed in the same color as the top part, elongate the appearance and makes one look taller and more elegant. |

Do you not recall the common "girdles" that women often wore to fit into a dress for an occasion or whatever? When I was young, I remember my mom had one. |

There's a reason we all stopped wearing them. They were uncomfortable and hot. Panty hose were a genuine improvement over a girdle, garters, and hose. Trousers are an improvement over panty hose, now that dress codes have relaxed. I don't show my legs in public. I wear long pants all summer, although I do own one pair of shorts. The only time I wore them in public was when I racked up my knee; I wore them to the doctor so I wouldn't have to drop trou. Cindy Hamilton |

But when they were discontinued, I was SOL. I am slightly tall with long, thin legs. I could never go by the height/weight chart. If I did that, I could pull the tops up to my arm pits. I used to joke that I didn't need any other clothes because they had me covered. If I went down a size, the crotch hung down below where it should have been. Either way, they were bad. |

I had a few panty girdles during the 80's and 90's. Prior to that, I had dance girdles. Those seem to no longer be made for women. At the time, the main purpose of those was to smooth things out for those who wore the old belted feminine products. Those belts were terribly obvious under a leotard otherwise. |

They're very unhealthy because it squeezes all your internal organs out of place and practically displaces the rib-cage. Not a good thing. I remember a story my mother told me about her mom wearing a girdle to church. She thought it would be okay to put on her panties over the pretty-much-made-of rubber girdle. They were walking to church and the panties slipped off the girdle and her panties fell down around her ankles. As the tale goes, grandma kicked them off, picked them up and put them in her purse and walked on as if nothing had happened. So, grandma went to church without wearing any panties. LOL Jill |

The girdles I remember had hooks for attaching loose stockings. The crotch was open. Some had cinching around the waist (hi-lines, I think they were called) but they were mostly for slimming the hips and smoothing bulges under dresses. Jill |
