Default 4th of July foods?

One person here was supposed to have been away but another person in that
party became ill so the trip is off. Luckily I pretty much had all I needed
so I can cobble together a meal.

I just finished the pot of beans that I like. I made them early because I
much prefer eating them cold. Also made another big batch of pasta salad.
I've been making one batch per week, varying the pasta shapes and
ingredients each time. This time, the only good peppers I could find were
very small so I cut them in smaller pieces and added more tomatoes. Yes, I
could have looked somewhere else for better peppers. I didn't. Also used
curly parsley as they had no flat. And yes, I could have looked for that too
elsewhere.

Got a red while and blue cake mix and star spangled frosting on Clearance at
Fred Meyers so will make a cake later.

Got 4 different kinds of tubular meats. Not sure what two of them are. sw
would likely know. One says steak seasoned. I got pretty much everything on
sale so was just going for cheap. Also some Quick'N Eats frozen burger
patties. Not my favorite but quick and cheap. Also buns and fruit.

Usually make popcorn around midnight so we can eat it while watching the
Fireworks.

What are your plans? And yes, I know not everyone celebrates this holiday.

If it doesn't rain I'll be grilling pork steak and corn on the cob.

They just changed our forecast to possible rain at night.

I'll check the weather in my area mid-afternoon and decide whether or
not to grill. I watch the tall trees that are around my house, the
skies for clouds, windspeed, etc. I'm pretty good at telling whether or
not there will be a sprinkling or a downpour. Or a thunderstorm. Just
by looking out the windows and stepping outside.

Today was a sunny, hot and very humid 95°F. A bit of a breeze came
through the trees but not enough to make the Spanish moss toss around.
And no rain. Rain is not really likely unless it happens in the wee
hours of tomorrow morning. Happy 4th of July!

I'll change my plans for grilling *if* it's raining and/or really windy.
There are many other options for cooking delicious pork steak and corn
on the cob.

I think our high was 73 today. Glad to see that we are back to more normal
weather. This is how our summers usually are.

Doris, you never heard of "tube steak"? Hot Dogs, Sausages. They seem
to be popular Fourth of July foods in the US.

This is why her posts are so amusing.

She said herself, it's frozen, it's cheap. It's tubular.

I think she means chubs (generally availabe as 1 lb tube) of ground
meat. She doesn't even know herself what type of meat it is she's
buying. That's her problem.

At least when I buy a chub of ground pork or any other meat sausage I
know what I'm buying. I definitely do not buy frozen burger patties.
I've been known to pat out and freeze my own hamburger patties.

Dunno and I'm not about to find out but I assume they can fit in a hot dog
bun. They look like they will.

In past years they have gone off until about 4:00 a.m. They are going on now
and there were some last night. The displays around here are quite
spectacular. I have said repeatedly that we are in an unincorporated area so
pretty much anything goes. I believe last year they made an ordinance to
have them end at midnight but nobody pays attention to that and nobody
enforces it either.

With the holiday being on Mon. this year, they may not go all night but you
never know. When we first moved in, the next door neighbor put on a big
display every weekend. And I do mean EVERY weekend. I don't know if he made
them himself or what. I have no clue how he could have afforded to do that.

Then he got married, had a baby and all that stopped. He has long since
moved away.

When we first moved here, fireworks could be shot off year round and they
often were by other neighbors as well. You'll see them for Diwaali and New
Year's as well. Although with the dry weather we've been having, I think
more people are coming to their senses and opting not to do them. We used to
do them. But no more. Not even sparklers. No need. I'll just sit back and
watch.

They are pushing for a ban next year. I'd be fine with that. I do like them
but, I can just as easily watch them online. Much safer that way.

Noooooo. I would never buy chubs. The meat patties are these:

http://lopezfoods.com/beef/

Chubs can be pink slime. Just no. When I buy ground beef, I buy grass fed
organic. Those truly make the best burgers. But these are cheap and seem to
be well liked. I am not into burgers myself. I will eat one once in a while.
I will likely just have the beans tomorrow.

I will go look and see what the tubular things are. These:

http://grillmatessausage.com/product/montreal-steak/

And these. The classic and the cheese.

We're having hot dogs (Caspers), potato salad, baked beans and strawberry
shortcake for dessert. I'll have a Guiness while watching the fireworks, dh
will have Maker's Mark, our non-drinking friends will have iced tea. Not at
all like the parties of our youth, but there you have it. :-)

I am not talking about those. And the back yard stuff isn't cheap. They do
the $50 and up a pop stuff.

I went to the show at Gasworks park once. Just not worth it. Have to get
there early in the day and bring food for the day. Lug chairs for miles or
sit on the ground. Have to use Porta Potties and then wait forever to get
your car on the street let alone where you need to be going. No thanks.

I got spoiled. When I was a kid, we could sit on our church grounds to watch
the Edmonds display. By high school, I had friends with views of the water.
Could sit on their decks and watch.

Then at some point, they moved where they did the fireworks and began
charging money to see them. Don't know if those are still going or not. But
they are going off on the other side of me as I type this. Next door
neighbors have a young baby. I'm sure they are thrilled.

Not sure we get that brand here. I wish the danged neighbor would stop the
fireworks. He has been at it now for over 2 hours. Started before it got
dark. Most are not even the pretty kind. Just the noisy ones.

I thought I had gotten rid of ours but I just found the box in garage.
Nothing fancy. Perhaps a few packs of sparklers, lots of party snaps and
little stuff like smoke bombs. I wasn't planning to do any but Angela asked
about sparklers. Also found the comical air horn. We bought two. One is
quite spectacular. The other just makes a squeaking sound.

We're demonstrating our classic American "Protestant work ethic" by slaving
away on the bathroom remodel all day. Finally, after two and a half weekends
of demolition, we've finished the framing (to true-up the walls for drywall)
and today we're stiffening the floor by gluing and screwing 1/2-inch pressure-
treated plywood to the old 3/4 inch cedar tongue-and-groove subfloor (which
had rotten spots and a really ridiculous number of holes that were made
with everything from a circular saw to an axe). If we have anything left
after that, we'll spray-foam the exterior wall cavity.

Dinner: take-out sushi.

I see a lot of bad language here but from some I expect it. I don't really
expect that from some of the others, so it comes as a surprise

LMAO at the "American street language." That language is world wide! Though
I don't consider initials at all bad language.

Probably. It obviously is an abbreviation for "What the Flagnar?!"

Ah, Ophelia, WTF are just a group of initials, aren't they?
(I speak like that in real life if it is in appropriate context and
company...WTF is wrong with that? ;-))
(I am watching Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.)

Probably when with good friends, most people do when with people
they're very familiar and therefore comfortable with, even saintly
people cuss, often saintly people cuss the most. When people pretend
they never cuss I know that they are not being honest, and then I know
they are not honest about anything else they profer. I actually don't
cuss much in my everyday life, especially not in mixed company, but
when circumstances warrant I can cuss with the best of them and
sometimes do. I think Doris is very normal, she rarely cusses here
but occasionally the situation warrants, and since in this venue it's
difficult to express emotion accurately there are times when stronger
language is appropriate and acceptible. However there are lines
drawn, as when the trolls express themselves fouly it's only
indicative of how poorly they are capable of communicating.

No. In real life I wouldn't use an acronym.

What a phoney LIAR you are Billy Boy, as if no other ethnic group
cusses. In my experience Americans are pikers where cussing is
concerned. No ethnicity on this planet expresses themselvs more
grossly than Italians, especially Italian females, and much moreso
with all their gesticulations... Italians need not verbalize at all to
communicate in the most vile ways posssible, they have a gesticulation
for every foul act both straight and ***. The French can be bad but
not even close to Italians. Yoose don't want to hear my experiences
with pretty young sisters/nuns in the Vatican during lent. One very
attractive young nun bent over and gave herself to me on Easter Sunday
right at the Trevi fountain, with the Pope orating... was very
crowded, must have been a million people, no one noticed.

I know they're precooked. That's why I bought them. Ready in two minutes.

If I want to make a really good burger, which I rarely ever do as I'm no fan
of burgers, then I'll make one from scratch.

If I want to make something really quick to eat, I'll make frozen White
Castles or these.

Do you not put spices or flavorings in your burgers? I do. At the very
least, salt and pepper.

I had not been planning anything for the 4th as Angela was not going to be
home. But then the plans fell through and not only was she here but two
guests as well. As turned out, the two guests ate nothing at dinner time but
Saltines. One made the claim that she had eaten 5 burgers at the party she
came from and the other had been sick to her stomach. Burger girl left. She
has a severe cat allergy but opted to pet Jazzy and it was all downhill from
there. This after having been given an allergy pill which she asked for. I
personally suspect that the smoke from all the fireworks was a more likely
cause of the sneezing and itchy eyes but, whatever.

I had to go to Costco for something else. Picked up the patties. They're
good to keep in the freezer. Went to another store and got the tubular
meats. It's all good. Wieners were roasted, S'mores were made, husband ate
three sausages and someone ate cake. Burger girl also gave us a bunch of
cupcakes but the claim was made that they taste like cornbread because she
forgot the vanilla. I can't personally see that but... Whatever to that too.

So? Nobody in this house has an issue with them. And we're the ones eating
them.

It's funny you mentioned that Sheldon! My son in law, whose Mom is a
Brooklyn born second generation Italian American, uses the term "WTF"
probably 30 times a day. Yes, it is not the Queen's English, and he
doesn't care. His Mom also calls my grandson a "little wretch" right
after she hands him a thousand bucks for his birthday.

That's a good thing. This is how *our* summers usually are. It will
hit 100°F this week and very humid. It won't cool off again until
October, maybe even November.
