I have been keeping an eye on the local sour cherry orchards. One around
the corner from me looks like it is just about ready for harvest. We were driving past it yesterday and I saw a strange side. There was a flock of herring gulls flying around one corner of it. It is quite common to see gulls flocking to fields that are being plowed or mowed, but there was no tractor and nothing happening. There was one gull perched in a tree and he appeared to be eating cherries. I didn't know gull liked fresh fruit enough to eat it from a tree but what was more curious was to see a web footed bird perched on a branch. |

Probably a wood duck: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood_duck> It was a little too far away to really see its coloring. Cindy Hamilton |

Dave, you better just get you a ladder, set it up under the first tree in the Orchard, climb up there and start eating Cherries! Otherwise the birds may get em all. William |

The person who owned the property used to look after them in the spring but never seemed to harvest them. We had a tradition of the stolen cherry pie. I would come home from work and make a batch of pie dough and set it into the fridge to cool. Then I went across the road and picked enough cherries to make a pie, brought them home, pitted them and made the pie. It was always the best pie of the year. |

Flocks of wild turkeys spend the night perched on tree limbs, all fly up at once at dusk, all fly down at dawn at once, very synchronized. |
