Last month in Sorrento, Italy, we saw these peppers for sale at a
local shop, with a sign above that calls them Natural Viagra. This seems interesting but I can't locate anything about this on the web... Anyone know exactly which pepper this is, or is it just another street vendor hoax? Ppicture at http://www.pdxconnect.com/natviag.htm Tx eno |

They look like regular dried peppers to me. I think the vendor is simply
touting them as an aphrodisiac. cheers =) Barb |

The 'Totally Tomatoes" catalog says, "Demand continues to far exceed supply of this ornery old heirloom, grown as much to shock the prudish as for its culinary value! Pods are 4-6 inches long, blunt-ended, and mature to a deep red--excellent for chili powder." Seed for this variety is carried by many catalogs--its shape is unmistakable. Janet |

But perhaps the sign maker didn't know how to spell viagra or write a V but I doubt it. |

Thanks all so far for your interesting replies...
I could kick myself for not getting in close for another shot... the jaggies really detract from the image. I did have a closer look though when we were there, and I didn't have the impression they were dried but I guess thinking about it they must have been. And, we saw at least one other store "somewhere" on our 3 week trip that had the same kind of display with the same sort of sign; so the real curiosity is whether or not there's any medicinal value here or not... thinking not, no more than any other pepper I suppose... eno |

I think perhaps any capsaicin-producing pepper could be considered "natural
Viagra." Capsaicin causes increased heart rate, sweating, increased metabolism, increased blood flow, etc. In fact, I used to sprinkle cayenne pepper into the toes of my ski socks - works like a charm ![]() -jen Half the people you know are below average. -Steven Wright |
