Plus you need to sweat to cool down, and that's perfect in dry heat.
Humid heat, not so much.

Wow. Just not good. It's getting dark here now and we're supposed to have a
thunder storm. I will believe it when I see it.

Sounds exciting! We had some exciting times last week with thunder and lighting. It's your turn now. Meanwhile, we're all smiles over here.

Apparently we also had a shooting here 11 days ago. The block and street
looked extremely close. I looked it up and under the map was a pic of my
house, next door neighbor's house and Angela's car. Say what? I saw nothing
on FB or on the news about this. I got an e-mail from spotcrime.com. Lovely!
There is a disclaimer that the pic is not necessarily the actual address.

Spotcrime.com is funny. It actually sounds like a pretty good idea. People are always interested in crime.

I used to use Crimemapping but our Sherriff's office quit reporting to them.
Today I discovered a rash of thefts near here. What I dislike about this is
that there seems to be a delay in the reporting and it doesn't give me the
exact address. Helps if I can talk to the neighbor and find out what was
taken so I know what not to do or to do or whatever.

Because of privacy issues and it would also become an aid for

For a start, it will tell crims where NOT to steal from, what areas to
avoid or conversely might attract crims to an address or area,
depending on what info is included.

It used to just list the offense, the date, time and show the house on a
map. Did not give the actual address but it was easy enough to determine
when it was the house next door. I do try to go outside from time to time
but given that I have no details whatever on the shooting, it does make me
leery. We are pretty sure that drug deals are going on across the street
from our house. Why there? No clue. I will sit out there and stare at cars
that are there for a long time with no apparent reason. There are plenty of
places to pull a car over. Doesn't need to be across from my house.
Especially since it's often the same damned car.

I know it's a big upheaval, but why not move? The way you have
described where you live here makes it sounds like an awful place.

Move? How in the world could we do that? I have no money to move. I just
spent the last of what I did have fixing this place up. And when we first
moved here, this was a rather sleepy city. Farm country. But not long after
the big boom occurred and suddenly everyone and his brother wanted to move
here. Which is partly why the crime rate has escalated. Too many people
moving in and not enough law enforcement around. But it's pretty much like
that everywhere here now. Wouldn't really matter where we moved to, assuming
that was even an option. You just never know what will happen.

I doubt it's like that almost everywhere.

I'm sorry Julie but I find this very hard to believe. You might have
answered it later because as you can tell I'm not replying to a current
post because I've just been too busy. They wouldn't allow an 18 year
old to call home to say she has to work late? No fk'n way is that
happening anywhere.

She wasn't 18. She was 17. I don't want to list the restaurant here but it
has very bad online reviews and for the same reasons I gave. Nobody is
trained properly to make the food so they just guess at how to make it or
have to go by the customer's instructions.

But please don't tell me that would never happen. I wasn't supposed to use
the phone for personal reasons when I was working at K Mart. I did sneak and
use it on occasion but they later had the phone bugged and people were fired
for using it. They wouldn't let me call home either. Granted, I was 19. But
they also wouldn't let anyone call their husband or wife. We did have a pay
phone and we were allowed to use that on our break.

Angela got no break whatever on most days. Not that she worked very often.
She did not. Most of the time they just sent her back home. But on her
second night of work, they would not let her call us and we became worried.
My husband called there and asked if she was still at work. The manager said
that she was. The manager was also a 16 year old who is no longer there. The
whole thing was a joke.

How could that be a fantasy? I am thinking back to the job that I had in
high school. It was for an inventory company. We never knew how long our
shifts might be. Sometimes they were 12 hours if you counted travel time. We
could never use the phone while working. Only after we were done, only if
there was time and there usually wasn't and only if we found a pay phone. No
cell phones in those days.

Indeed, bove shares pure BS fiction again! Does bove ever "write" (er,
post) anything that is believable?? Rarely!! All too often, bove has
demonstrated she has no credibility, whatsoever. Bove's cockamamie
'scenario' as described this time is only another example, among many
hundreds (thousands?). It is astounding any employer would not allow a
(minor?) employee to make a brief, one- or two-minute telephone call to
inform parents/family they had to work longer than anticipated and would
be home at a later time than expected.

Besides, bove's whole "story" above is debunked because without doubt
Angela has her own cellphone (smartphone, whatever) and could've used
that device to phone home, or texted, emailed, IM'd, whatever! No older
teen these days is without a cellphone - certainly not bove's spoiled
issue, poor thing (sigh).

With nary a doubt, bove's spoiled daughter has her own cell/smart phone
and could have used it to "phone home". Heh, what teenager does not
have one these days?! Bove has been caught in another fallacy yet
again. Bove's job 40-years ago has no bearing whatsoever with today's
technology and cannot compare. Deee-bunked!

Actually, I believe quite a bit of what she writes. Her personality
and intelligence level see to it that she's often confused, put-upon,
and wronged.

There is a possibility that there is an element of truth to Bove's side
of the story. I am thinking that the apple did not fall far from the
tree and that the kid was lying to her about why she had to go out. She
was telling her trusting mother that she was going to work and would
then go out and party with her friends. She had a ready made excuse for
not coming back with money.

That could be. She is a pathological lie. Say it or write it and it is
true.

The possibility is only too true! BTDT (oh! the stories I could tell!)

No. She had to wear an ugly uniform and clunky shoes. No kid would dress up
like this just to return home mad as hell a half an hour later. The place
just wasn't run correctly and from what I can see online, it still isn't. At
least the owner's daughter is no longer making frantic posts online about
how they can't get anyone to work there. This is rather how they got Angela.
She went in there to buy something and they begged her to apply. She already
had two friends who had recently started working there. But in the end, none
of them got any hours outside of their first few weeks of work.

I don't believe that fercocktah fairytale either. Every place I ever
worked when my obligation was to report for work for the day if they
sent me home early they still had to pay me for the full day... same
as reporting for jury duty, if they don't need you and send you home
they still need to pay you for the entire day... that's why they went
to stand-by/call-in... make a computerized call early in the AM to
find out if they need you to report or not. I don't even want to
address that purjury about not being permitted to use the company
phone for contacting people who are expecting you at a particular time
when the company changes the work hours... it's illegal to hold an
employee past their regular time without prior agreed upon
concessions, that's imprisonment.
Where I last worked for 25 years when the company asked employees to
work overtime at the last minute we could agree or not but we usually
agreed as the compensation was getting paid double time, plus a paid
hour for mealtime, so out ot the 4 hours overtime (was always s4
hours) we only workd three hours and also quit a nalf hour early to
clean up the shop. Normally overtime was schedualed the week prior
and we were paid time and a half, but last minute we were paid double
time. We also were permitted reasonable use of company telephones at
any time... a few minutes to rearrange a car pool was very reasonable,
especially considering the company promoted car pooling. Weekend and
holiday work was always paid at double time. We also were paid our
regular pay for jury duty plus were permited to keep the jury duty pay
which was mere pennies. Even back in the early '60s when I worked in
the CA aircraft industry we were never denied use of company
telephones for conveying changes in work hours.. we were working three
shifts 24/7... they needed us.

DUR. Because they have access to the same technology as anyone else.

If you knew how to use Google you'd find it's quite easy to do.

Damn, I hate it when my neighbors have people over for no apparent
reason! WTF are you talking about?

> There are plenty of places to pull a car over. Doesn't need to be across
> from my house. Especially since it's often the same damned car.

Uh... I'd be more worried if they just stopped by very briefly. Went
in, came back out a few minutes later. Lots of different cars. *That*
screams drug deal.

What you're describing sounds like people who enjoy socializing. Gee,
with the people who own the same damned car.

Why across the street from your house? Because they *live* there so
that's where their friends park. Where else would you expect them to
park? They're not in your driveway so why do you care?

It sounds like you need to go live in the country where you would never
have to interact with anyone.

Moving is not always an economical option.

I have to wonder why they bought the house in the first place. It
sounds like she never liked it. Actually, it reminds me of something
from Mother Goose:

"There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile,
He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile;
He bought a crooked cat which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together in a little crooked house."

You'd think that Jill, who's had to defend living where she does on
numerous occasions, would cut Julie some slack. Ah, well, a petty
consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

I would *love* to be a very isolated lighthouse keeper.
Just give me cable tv, books, and internet.
Toss in a couple of lighthouse ferrets and I'm there!
Sadly they are all automated in the US now.

I had a friend who was a lighthouse keeper for a while. He had been a
major drug freak and somehow ended up married to one of the best looking
girls from my high school class. He got a job as a lighthouse keeper in
an island off the coast of Nova Scotia. Being the kind of guy he was,
he took a couple pounds of marijuana out to the island with him. At
some point he found Jesus and baptized himself in the Atlantic Ocean in
the middle of winter and shortly after his wife left him for the
helicopter pilot who used to bring their supplies.
