I see two hurricanes are headed toward Hawaii - are the Big Island and
Maui in the most danger at this point? Is Lester still predicted to
miss the islands? Are you looking at the usual amount of rain, heavy
rain, or something more on Oahu? I haven't seen Oahu mentioned, so
that's a good sign.

Tropical storms coming our way are fairly common this time of year. Last month we had 7 named storms heading towards us. It's getting so that we're pretty complacent these days. It looks like we won't see any action on Oahu but the Big Island will but who knows what could happen? We'll probably be in for a lively time in the future if the Earth gets much warmer.

That's for sure. So far, we've had the warmest August that I can
remember. I actually left my jacket in the car when I ran my errands,
and August shouldn't be like that West of Twin Peaks... in fact, it
should be overcast and nasty up to the Altamont Pass this time of
year.

Sounds like it's a good thing for you guys. That's the way it will be. Some places will have worse weather and others, more pleasant.

Bummer about the hurricanes. My niece lives in California and got
married there last year. Her anniversary is Sept. 5th and her husband
is taking her to Hawaii for their first anniversary. They are headed
there tomorrow or Friday.

Call me a skeptic, but I live at the southern edge of the glaciers of
the last ice age. There is a hill about a mile north of us that is sand
and gravel that was deposited when the glaciers started to recede.

Global warming and global cooling happen so slowly that most folks in the past never even noticed it. As far as a hurricane passing through, most tourists don't seem to mind it much - just as long as it doesn't last more than a couple of days. I kinda like not knowing what going to happen.

The 1900 Galveston cane killed 13,000.

Oh dear, I do hope you don't have that again. Are you near that ditch? We
have had a lot of flooding in Scotland but I have been very lucky and not
had any in my house.

The ditch runs alongside our parking lot. I didn't even know the freaking ditch was clogged! My thinking is that some residents couldn't go down in that ditch and start pulling those plants out. Maybe they'll have to do it on the sly - late at night. That would be cool. I'll bring it up at our next club meeting. It would be a nice community project.

You are correct about that, the trouble is that it was supposed veer away faster and be at a more comfortable distance away from us. What kind of world is this where you can't even depend on a hurricane? As it goes, there was a hurricane watch issued for this island today - it's the first one issued for Oahu since hurricane Iwa in 1982.

Well, the good news is that they cleared out some of that drainage ditch - so there's that.

They say when there's a tornado to lay in a ditch so have a ditch handy.

Wow. So hurricanes are rare in Hawaii? Guess that makes sense. You live
out in the middle of the ocean.

Here on the east coast of the US, the continent funnels hurricanes up
the coast. We get watches or warnings almost every year here....and
maybe several of them.

Big wind and rain event here tonight and tomorrow. Supposed to be winds
gusting up to 50mph and 3-5 inches of rain in just 24 hours. Nothing
serious but I hope we don't lose electricity. That's never any fun.

Hurricanes that approach us are fairly common. Hurricanes that hit the island of Oahu are not. We get so many warnings that we get complacent these days. Hurricane Lester's vector has taken a more Northerly path so it looks like it's going to be another miss. Well alright.
