But if you were in that position, wouldn't you have given her the chance
WITHOUT exploiting her? Cowell could have done so.

Show business is tough. A number of people in my wife's family are
actors, some of them quite successful and others gave up. They make
good money when they are working, but they started their careers
spending more time looking for work and auditioning than working.

I know a lot of wait staff that will someday be big stars or corporation
presidents.

Exceptional people, like regular people, don't want to be defined by their talents or handicaps. OTOH, when have we ever not exploited the talented and try to sweep the handicapped under the rug? One has to be careful about dreaming a dream because sometimes it comes true.

Atticus Finch: I remember when my daddy gave me that gun. He told me that I should never point it at anything in the house; and that he'd rather I'd shoot at tin cans in the backyard. But he said that sooner or later he supposed the temptation to go after birds would be too much, and that I could shoot all the blue jays I wanted - if I could hit 'em; but to remember it was a sin to kill a mockingbird.

Jem: Why?

Atticus Finch: Well, I reckon because mockingbirds don't do anything but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat people's gardens, don't nest in the corncrib, they don't do one thing but just sing their hearts out for us.

I found Tape Face tiresome after a few shows, don't know how he made it to
the semi's. I like Grace and also Laura, I'm not a huge opera fan, but that
girl is amazing. Gary if you want to discuss AGT the old American Idol group
discusses them each week. alt.tv.american-idol, not sure if you're
interested, but thought I'd mention it.

True. Our local get-togethers feature remarkably good musicians.

I would hope so, but I'm not in that business so I don't know how it
works in detail. Nor have we seen her contract.

The contract has a special clause: "If you get mentally completely
messed up during the process, that's alright, because we'll have made
our money and Ed will still defend us."

I'd love it if they would start to play music instead of that crass garbage they put out.

And she is now financially secure, even well off, which she certainly
wasn't before.

Yeah, me too. Fact of the matter is, all singers starting a career are
hoping for money, if they weren't they would only sing for their own
enjoyment. I see no exploitation in giving someone a chance.

I think this is a cultural difference. For you, it's all about money.

Being a fellow Aspie, I could see how that could happen. Then again,
that sort of pressure could get to anyone, really.

That's hard to know for sure. Plenty of people have made 'lots' of
money in the music biz, only to have it eaten away by various
parasites. Net result is often they're broke but 'rich'.

But he has made a lot of people a lot of money as well, so that's not a bad
thing.

Good lord Roy ! You're looking for them to be musicians, they never

flogged it ever since. Hope it's strenuous these days for Jagger to
prance around the stage with an old fashioned mike.
