Wow, amazing that someone without probably any training or anything can
sound like that.

I was surprised they compared him to Paul Potts, I find his voice much
more full.

He worked in a bakery for 30 years until he retired. He makes me
think of Harry Chapins Mr. Tanner

I knew Harry Chapin, but not this song. I like it.

Can't imagine why.
Both were working class men
Both were on a "Got Talent" show
Both same the same song
Both won

I don't understand the appeal of these kind of shows. There are
literally millions of people around the world who can 'sing' to that
standard. They generally lack nuance and character in their voices,
and are more focused on imitating a particular vocal style, and end up
sounding dry and sterile. And that is the difference between an
ordinary and a great vocalist.

Rather than stop at such superficialities, one can also compare the two
voices.

Paul Potts was years younger - did you see the utube where Hirkels
sang You Raise Me Up ?

Well there was Susan Boyle - she would never have been known any other
way. Watch the Hurkens one where he sings You Raise me Up, much
better than Nessum Dorma.

It is not just about singing. There are many good acts that get
highlighted and people can get the break they need to go pro.
Musicians, magicians, acrobats, dancers, you name it. There is really
some good, entertaining talent on the America version this year.

Precisely my point. Where is she now? I just checked, and she's
currently worried that she's about to be dropped by her label.

IMO, these type of shows are not the right way to foster *genuine* new
talent (that said, these same shows would *never* put on any genuine
talent anyway). Susan Boyle (and many others over the years) simply
are not good enough to sustain a musical career. Most of those
selected don't even write their own material... The shows themselves
obviously provide entertainment though, as so many people seem to like
them.

Well, see, I'm not interested in watching people sing other people's
songs for a start. I watched him sing it anyway, I'm still lost on
what's so good about his singing <shrug>. Just like Celine Dion or
Whitney Houston (for example) is lost on me. They sound like crap to
me. Theres more to good vocals than the ability to hold a note

It's good that it is not limited to singing. I'm just not attuned to
what is broadly popular when it comes to any forms of entertainment.
I don't watch TV either for that reason. Lowest common denominator and
all that...

I watch little television and certainly not those shows, I only see
the clips on Youtube.

I read an article that said she had some head problems, the intense
publicity made her very agitated.

Simon is the guy people like to hate. I like him. He's more honest in
his critique than the other judges, imo. For that reason he's often the
one not voting for someone. If you make Simon happy, you're in.

In Scotland, it's still common for very ordinary people of all ages
to sing (or play music, or both) in almost any social situation; the
pub, parties, with friends. It's just part of social life and some very
unexpected people have wonderful voices. Susan Boyle is just one example
of that tradition; her singing had been admired and enjoyed locally for
years before the talent show that brought her to world notice.

IMO Cowell has a great deal to answer for in commercially exploiting
such a vulnerable person and exposing her to pressures that right from
the start, she couldn't cope with. However, her saving grace is that she
still lives in her original home and community. Susan Boyle will still
be singing live to people who like to hear her, long after the
entertainment world has forgotten Cowell.

Same as most people. I like Simon because he ignores all the hard luck
stories on these shows. He rated them by performance only. He's brutally
honest.

I liked what he said to Tape Face the last time. Something like, "You
can take something completely stupid and make us laugh." I agree. Tape
Face is refreshing and funny. Too bad he has to compete with singers and
dancers.

My top two singers are that young girl that sings like an opera singer.
Amazing but also a bit weird to me. She's fantastic but it freaks me out
when she sings. It's not her natural voice at all.

My favorite is Grace with the ukulele. Amazing voice and the last song
was her own. I was complete won over with that.

Glad to hear it. Sometimes it seems like Americans have forgotten
that you don't have to be a professional to make music. I have
a voice like a magpie, but a large repertoire of songs memorized.

They are called Kitchen Parties here and it's from there that fiddle
masters like Natalie McMaster emerge

I would prefer they do away with the hard luck stories and judge the
contestants on their musical talent instead of their drama. Simon seems
a bit of an ass for using the shock value of his comments.

She is amazing, but I wonder if she would do better had she waited a
couple of years. She is very talented for her age.

One of the best was Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts.

I don't blame him. She said on stage she wanted to be a professional
singer. He gave her the opportunity. She had no ideal what a brutal
life it is to be a professional entertainer.

Ever have a bad day but still went to work? Most of us have and we can
usually avoid others to a point and get by. When thousands of people
paid a lot of money for a ticket you have no choice but to entertain no
matter you are in a grouchy mood. Little wonder so many end up on pills
or booze.
