There are literally millions of people around the world who can 'sing' to that standard. They generally lack nuance and character in their voices, and are more focused on imitating a particular vocal style, and end up sounding dry and sterile. And that is the difference between an ordinary and a great vocalist. |

I just checked, and she's currently worried that she's about to be dropped by her label. IMO, these type of shows are not the right way to foster *genuine* new talent (that said, these same shows would *never* put on any genuine talent anyway). Susan Boyle (and many others over the years) simply are not good enough to sustain a musical career. Most of those selected don't even write their own material... The shows themselves obviously provide entertainment though, as so many people seem to like them. >Watch the Hurkens one where he sings You Raise me Up, much >better than Nessum Dorma. Well, see, I'm not interested in watching people sing other people's songs for a start. I watched him sing it anyway, I'm still lost on what's so good about his singing <shrug>. Just like Celine Dion or Whitney Houston (for example) is lost on me. They sound like crap to me. Theres more to good vocals than the ability to hold a note ![]() |

She could probably get a career in a recording studio though...just no concert appearances. |

In Scotland, it's still common for very ordinary people of all ages to sing (or play music, or both) in almost any social situation; the pub, parties, with friends. It's just part of social life and some very unexpected people have wonderful voices. Susan Boyle is just one example of that tradition; her singing had been admired and enjoyed locally for years before the talent show that brought her to world notice. IMO Cowell has a great deal to answer for in commercially exploiting such a vulnerable person and exposing her to pressures that right from the start, she couldn't cope with. However, her saving grace is that she still lives in her original home and community. Susan Boyle will still be singing live to people who like to hear her, long after the entertainment world has forgotten Cowell. Janet UK |

He rated them by performance only. He's brutally honest. I liked what he said to Tape Face the last time. Something like, "You can take something completely stupid and make us laugh." I agree. Tape Face is refreshing and funny. Too bad he has to compete with singers and dancers. My top two singers are that young girl that sings like an opera singer. Amazing but also a bit weird to me. She's fantastic but it freaks me out when she sings. It's not her natural voice at all. My favorite is Grace with the ukulele. Amazing voice and the last song was her own. I was complete won over with that. |

I would prefer they do away with the hard luck stories and judge the contestants on their musical talent instead of their drama. I often wonder what happens to some of the acts later. I certainly don't consider most of them "losers" because they are damned good. Agree though, it can be unfair to say a magician is better than a singer, thus the winner. Both good, just different. |

She said on stage she wanted to be a professional singer. He gave her the opportunity. She had no ideal what a brutal life it is to be a professional entertainer. Ever have a bad day but still went to work? Most of us have and we can usually avoid others to a point and get by. When thousands of people paid a lot of money for a ticket you have no choice but to entertain no matter you are in a grouchy mood. Little wonder so many end up on pills or booze. |

Johnny Rotten had the perfect look for the job. |
