My mother died on January 6th, 2004 of lung cancer. Just remember
that every one stops smoking eventually.

Ida,

I'm sorry about your mother. My father died October 28th, 2004 (17 days
ago). He went in for a simple gall bladder operation and ended up dieing of
liver failure from a virus that entered his bloodstream. He didn't smoke,
he drank moderately, and he exercised every day.

Yesterday when I was googling Wayne's corn souffle recipe I found the thread
about everyone missing loved ones on Thanksgiving and the holiday season in
general. I thank all of you for that, it really helped me.

Elisa,

I'm so sorry about your recent loss. It's so hard to lose a parent,
especially when it isn't at all expected. As an only child, losing both my
parents was very difficult. We adjust, we go on, but something is always
missing after that. I feel lucky to have wonderful memories.

One of the slogans' printed on Canadian cig' packages says that 50% of
smokers will die from that.
I wonder what the other 50% will kack of?
Just a thought.
None of us will get out of this alive.

Re-read my post and it seems to come off somewhat 'flip'. Not what I would
have intended given the original post.
My apologies for that.

Congratulations!

But, don't be overconfident. Like any other addiction, the potential for
relapse is great. You will never get over your love of tobacco and nicotine
and the desire to indulge will be with you till the day you die. It becomes
easier to rationalize a step back as your body heals itself and your health
improves. It's all too easy 2 or 3 years down the road to find yourself in
a stressfull situation with some smoking friends and let yourself go for
"just this one time". DON'T DO IT. Hang tough and persevere.

To what other drugs are you addicted?

>if you need any help, come on over to
>ALT.SUPPORT.STOP-SMOKING

I smoked for over 30 years, tried every imaginable method to stop including
joining groups (lots of groups), only cold turkey on ones own works... worked
for me, haven't smoked for many years now... after the first month I never had
the urge again. Enlisting the help of others is merely a crutch, support
groups are the worst route, gives one a false sense of security in that it
offers a place to lay blame other than on oneself... support groups are
*pitiful* (literally), they are the route to guaranteed failure, don't do it.
Some things are best accomplished alone, stopping addictions is one of them.
People begin smoking due to influence from others, but pressuring from others
is the least successful route for [permanently] stopping any addiction.

Clues:

1. If you find yourself setting a date/time for that last smoke you will
fail... stop right now!

2. If you find yourself keeping constant count of how long you've stopped you
will start again, could be years later but you will start.
