I think you can hunt alligators.

Probably so, but the thread drifted to include protected crocodiles in
Australia. I'm not sure of the status of alligators, I just know I
don't want to find one in my yard again.

I had alligator meat once too. This was at a friends house, not a
restaurant. Since I always like to try any food plain first (to see what
taste you're starting with), I asked for a bite of it cooked before
continuing with the recipe. It was a little swampy to me. Like you say,
fishy and even a bit muddy with swamp decay taste. Not really much to
brag about.

That said, the final dish was amazingly good after adding many
vegetables and spices/herbs. More neutral tasting chicken would have
been better maybe.

I do have a problem with how they are caught though. Just as evil as leg
traps for other animals.

I doubt there's a zoo within 2000 land miles of Darwin.

In Australia at least, crocs are farmed for both their meat and hides.
They are not sourced from the wild.

I doubt any meat would be destined for animal consumption. That said,
I left the Northern Territory back in 1992 and haven't been back
since, so I'm not 100% sure. IMO it's very unlikely because
logistically and economically it wouldn't make much sense.

No 'real' zoos anywhere in northern Australia to my knowledge.
