If I want a meat replacer, I prefer mock duck (or mock pork or mock
chicken, same idea). Very nice, but not if you're gluten intolerant.

No, not unless you eat prefab supermarket meat products to which they
add it as an extender.

IME, any vegetarian recipes that try to emulate meat range from being
not very nice to outright awful. The best vegetarian recipes don't
bother to even try to pretend to be meat.

Yep. This kinda reminds me of last week waiting at the supermarket
checkout. The hipster couple in front of me had a pile of fresh
vegetables and low fat dairy products... the only other item was one
of those awful manufactured meat chubs of dog food. I wanted to punch
them in the face, but sadly we have laws against that.

Mock duck replaces meat and I really like it. I don't mind what it
replaces as long as it tastes that good. I'd eat it on a stick as an ice
cream replacement.

LOL, duck ice cream.

Ingredients suggest it's nasty, from wikipedia:
"Mock duck is a gluten-based vegetarian food. It is made of wheat
gluten, oil, sugar, soy sauce, and salt. It is thus high in protein.
Its distinctive flavor and artificial "plucked duck" texture
distinguish it from other forms of commercially available gluten
products"

Regardless, I'd try it out of sheer curiosity. Duck is one of my very
favourite meats, not that I would expect mock duck to be actually
duck-like.

That's not a bad ingredient list. I think there's also some ancient
Chinese wizardry involved in the production. Whether you'd like the
flavour is another matter.

That's good. Soon you'll be able to order your plant-based protein rare,
medium or well done. And if you squeeze it right, you can hear a faint
moo.

Your concerns about meat production will pretty much resolve itself. Slaughtering animals for meat will be frowned upon as a savage practice - at least in the Western world. Oddly enough, smoking will be okay.

Yes, I think that will happen. It is inefficient and barbaric when you
think about it. But are you referring to smoking tobacco or meat?

Well OK, I'm not really following this thread too carefully. I'll let you have your way otherwise it's gonna be an exclamation mark crisis of unprecedented proportions. All I know is that you better not make this about me!

Seems we have a fight going on between someone who said let's not fight
and someone who replied let's not fight.

I'll bet Jill wishes she had a generator. Nothing much more boring than
living without electricity for an extended period. sheez! Hopefully
boredom is her only problem.

Anyway, I'm back and fine. No electricity was no fun. No personal damage
for me though it is a mess everywhere around the beach. With that storm
turning way before it got here, I didn't see all this mess coming. Oh
well.

You're close, Steve. I live on the bottom floor of a two-story building.
Underneath my bottom floor is the basement. The basement is partly below
and partly above ground level. Nobody lives in the basement. It's an
open space (2100 sq feet). Mostly empty but sometimes used temporarily
for company storage. It also contains the two giant water heaters for my
building (24 apartments).

Anyway, I live on the bottom apartment above the basement. It's about 6
feet above ground. I walk up 10 steps to get to my front door. No
flooding problems here.

Lots of mess here but my only problem was loss of electricity then more
time without cable tv.

Thanks Ed. Funny what you said above.

As of this morning, still over half of my neighborhood was without
power. Then at 9am, I went to the drugstore. On the way home, I stopped
at my 2nd choice grocery store. They are still closed with no power.

Glad you're fine. The news for North Carolina just keeps getting
worse and worse. It's beyond my imagination as to how individuals
deal with it. Thankfully you're dry and hopefully Jill is and was as
well.

Then the two floors are 4,200 sq ft... divided by 24 apartments if all
equal size makes them each about the size of a roomy toilet (175 sq

lol. Failed math in high school, I'll bet.

My apartment is 1050 sq ft. Same as my next door neighbor.
Basement is underneath us both. Basement = 2100 sq feet.

After Sandy, we were without power for 11 days. Our neighbor's tree
had fallen on our wires but they weren't pulled down (the power
outage was counties wide), our Verizon cable wire was left hanging
looow. All these tree service trucks going back and forth, I was
thinking if our power comes back up but our cable is out for another
two weeks because the cable is pulled down, I might just lose it.

We saw a Verizon truck outside and Ron ran out and gave the guy
20 if he'd tighten up our cable wire. No truck that comes down
our street's going to hit it now, it was higher than the
electric wires.

From photos, some homes in the road Jill lives in have suffered
damage from fallen branches and trees, but roofs and windows were not
blown off/out.

ISTR Jill said on rfc her home did not have trees very close to it, so
I hope hers is safe.

According to the Dataw site, power is now back on, phones are not, the
club is serving food (it had generators to keep the fridges andfreezers
working)

Then many of those apartments are smaller than a phone booth.
My house is 2,000 sq ft, I don't consider it large. There's no way it
can be divided up into 24 apartments, not even 12 apartments, not even
six apartments, not even three apartments, perhaps two 2 bedroom
apartments.

Thats good to know. Your area (in general) was hit almost as hard as
Bow Creek general area where I am.

I'll keep an eye out for it. We have a pretty good Asian foods store
in Launceston, that might be a good place to start looking for it.

Don't get stupid. His particular building has the hot water heaters
for the rest in his complex. There would be multiple buildings
supports by 2 hot water heaters of a commercial level.

When I lived in San Diego, the side of our apartment building had one
of 6-8 commercial units across the complex. I think there were about
200 apartments total but individual buildings did not have their own.

Yes, Asian stores would be your best chance. I don't know how the canned
version compares to the frozen one, which is what we always buy.

Gary as we see now, is ok. He lives higher than most in his area being
above well due a basement. (10ft up)

The animosity, was everyone *forgot* Gary was in just as much trouble
but before we could tell how bad it was, it was too late even if he
wanted to leave. Jill had options, he didnt.

To have that trimmed out when I mentioned it, upset me. He's now
posted and is ok.

Damage on Dataw was not light, but we had far worse here with houses
completely destroyed and Interstates with 10FEET of water depth in
places. Roads and houses subsumbed to sink holes.

I will admit, Dominion power has been outstanding at getting folks back
on the power grid. It's frustrating to those not back yet, but they
got nearly 1/2 the population back on within 2 days (worst was the high
winds, worst outage levels were Monday morning, 720,000 in VB and half
out, now just 19,000 out).

Yup! Jill proabably is bored silly but she may have last second
evacuated. You would not have had a warning as it was too fast. Damn
the local weather casters. They always under evaluate. wxrisk was
waring us 2 days earlier and even he was horrified at the later winds
that took out that much power here.

I am really impressed that Dominion power got so many back on line that
fast since conditions mostly didn't allow them to do much until Monday
around noon.

Kudos to them!

I didn't know Gary was in trouble, from what I saw I thought the
area was okay. Regardless, it was never a Jill vs Gary thing.
No one besides Jill wondered if I was alive or dead after my state was
slammed by Sandy, that's the way it is. I'm sure Gary wasn't upset we
didn't know he was in a badly hit area.

Grin, happens. Here's the fun, the areas most prone to flooding tend
to not have any stores. Bet the dollr store on Rosemont (n PLaza?) has
some great sales where the paper on the cans was damaged!

I couldn't slosh that way per the news, until late Monday.

You are correct. They won't ignore Dataw, but an area of say 25,000
residents wil take priority over one of 3,000. Sadly, that is how it
is.

I am pretty sure she is just waiting for power.

I hope it's not too much of a trial there.

Hi Nancy, I didn't mind that folks were worried about Jill. I still am
but suspect she's just without power.

I minded that my alert was deleted for a regular here and trimmed to
just Jill. I dont give a rats ass if any like Gary, he was missing and
in a major damage area and it really bothers me that this was blown off
by many.

He's fine but his local grocery is still closed. Hopefully that gives
a cluebat on what happened here.

I have another local here (not on newsgroup) who has not checked in.
Last note was walking to the bar along Great Neck. *shudder*.
