OMG, this is scary.

"Our refrigerators have been running on generators since the power went
out so don't worry, the food is fresh."

Uh, what? No, thank you.

why wouldn't it be safe? The power went of in the neighborhood but
the clubhouse fridge was o.k. because the generators kicked in.

The power was out for four days. True, the generators were running at
the Club. But we were also told our water should be boiled before
drinkng it. They sent that message via eail when the power was out. Heh.

I'm thinking about all the things that could have gone bad in their
walk-in coolers and freezers. Long story short, I discarded a lot of
thawed food. Seafood and chichen, mostly.

No, they'd rather serve they're rotting seafood and chichen to
customers. Beats an expensive advertising campaign.

Is is fresh or it was fresh last week when the hurricane hit and has not
gone rotten yet? I wonder about the meat that has been sitting in
coolers for a week when no one was around to eat it.

Safe perhaps, but I would question the freshness. The hurricane was a
week ago. If they had fresh meat at the time and everything was shut
down, then last week's meat has been in the cooler for at least a week.

That should be fine, unless you know something we don't?

was it cryovac'd? You have no idea what they have, what they tossed
out. Restaurants are faced with health department requirements all year
long, but now they will skip them?

Actually, I read that as 'freezer' when it's 'refrigerator (still on
my first latte for the day, that's my excuse). Yeah, some of the food
could be questionable, depending on various factors.

If gasoline had been generated, you could make a "knock - knock" joke, tert...

You're right. I don't know what they tossed out. The notice reported
that they had generators. The information so far is that the power went
off in the hurricane a week ago. I questioned the claim that the food
was *fresh*. If it is the food that has been in (working) coolers since
the hurricane hit last week it would be at least a week old.

FWIW.... I just looked at the guide for food handlers in Ontario. The
section on storage suggests the maximum time that various foods should
be stored and the fish, meat and fowl have a limit less than a week. A
number of fruits and vegetables are also under a week.

That doesn't mean they are dangerous to eat, but they certainly are not
*fresh*.

Exactly. It was fresh last week. I know there weren't any food
deliveries going on because the island was locked down until Monday.

Yep. They are just trying to use up the old food before they have to
toss it out. Nifty buffet lunch and dinner. In this rare case, they
should offer it to you all at a very low price. I laughed about one
thing. The price then all are served on paper plates. Those
cheapskates. Like I will eat at some restaurant with those prices and
use a paper plate. Homey don't play that.

Depends on what is is and how it is packaged. Week old veggies may be
ok. Dairy is probably good as most are good for a couple of weeks
beyond the expiration date.

If the meat was cryo packed it would be fine too. A month is not a
concern. I'd toss seafood though. Even that, do you know how long it
is out of the water from catch to store? Could be on the boat for days.
