It doesn't have to happen any way, but it does. I don't care at all about
your religious beliefs BTW, and it's OK to miss Mia, I still miss my dog
Sophie some days.

What's interesting about the Teslas is that it doesn't look like a test mule with a bunch of sensors sticking out of it. What this tells me is that they're taking shortcuts with the environmental sensors.

Why do you think you need visible sensors? Many cars have lane assist,
adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection and nothing sticking out.
I do have a barely visible clear plate on the front for the CC and auto
braking.

Mostly, you can tell autonomous cars by the array of sensors mounted on the roof. My guess is that the biggest one will be a LIDAR unit. This is used to map out the surrounding area. You probably don't need LIDAR and the Tesla does not. Most likely it's mapping out the area using cameras and ultrasonic sensors and software that stitches it all together. My guess is that production cars in the future will not be using lasers to map out the area but mostly, it's the easiest (and maybe the most reliable) way to do it at this time.

Yup. Everything but the software to run it. But mentioning that sort
of dampens the hype.
