You weren't talking about low rent districts. You were talking about
your town. Unless your entire town is a low rent district. And even
then.

I got the impression from previous posts that you lived somewhere near
Kaneohe Bay. How about Tamura's Fine Wine and Liquors? Or Kaneohe Liquor?

Granted, y'all aren't laid out on a flat grid like hereabouts, so I
realize that what looks relatively nearby might involve quite a bit of
driving.

Here's an Ann Arbor Liquor store for comparison:

Perhaps they feel their liquor customers aren't receptive to online
information. The photo of the building says "Liquor" on the sign.

Tamura's is located in Aikahi. I don't consider it to be part of Kaneohe. I gotta drive 6 miles to get there. It might part of Kaneohe but that's the way the locals think. I don't think there's a Kaneohe Liquor store around here. If there is, they're keeping it a secret. Calling a liquor store a Party Store is a pretty good idea.

Not in the photo that I see. I've never been to Kaneohe Market but it is in fact, a liquor store. That area makes my spidey sense tingle so I stay away. But you are right - there is a liquor store in Kaneohe. Can strip clubs be next?

Ann Arbor is in Michigan, where I came across the Ask at the
counter for liquor routine. Maybe it's just not on the shelves.

Austin is a big urban city with lots of traffic and crime.
I live in a small village with a population of maybe 3,000 and with
one traffic light. The entire village is very nicely landscaped and
maintained by the local gardening club. There are plenty of lovely
specimen trees and shrubs donated by a major nursery known worldwide.
The village center is a large park, with a gorgeous pond, with ducks
all summer and boarded by a farmer in winter. There's a huge gazebo
too.

There are no liquor shops in your town. Wait, there are, but not in low
rent districts. Wait, forget about low rent districts, you don't live in
Honolulu.

Is it fair to say that your view of your surroundings is a bit unstable?

Did you read my post where I said my grocery store has liquor on
the shelves, for anybody to put in their cart without intervention?

Granted, I didn't phrase it that explicitly.

Perhaps in the olden days (when you were in Michigan) there was a
blue law about how the transaction was to be handled, but it
hasn't been that way for, oh, 40 years at least. It's entirely
up to the shopkeeper how he wants to stock liquor.

Actually, I feel it's fair to say he has some issues about liquor:

"That stuff is sold in supermarkets. I don't like to go down those aisles
either because I might meet somebody I know jonesing for a fix."

Normal people don't refer to alcohol as "a fix", nor to the act of
buying it as "jonesing".

"Man, I'm jonesing for a fix! Gotta go buy some 20-year-old single
malt."

Lol, a quote from an upper class alcoholic?

But yes, he sounds rather hostile towards alcohol. Maybe he's seen a lot
of its nasty side. Not in person, because I seem to remember he's a
recovering Dr Pepper user.

"More than fair" would be an understatement. I'm not a big fan of alcohol, alcoholism, alcoholics, DUI's, and most things to do with drunk folks. I've seen what it does to families and it's not good. I think like my mom. She saw my dad drunk in front of us kids and put a stop to that straight away. She protected us kids from that. My dad was forced to change his ways. Thanks mom!

You guys might not see what's going on but I certainly do. When an old lady or guy goes to a grocery store and buys a large bottle of alcohol and that's all, they're not planning on throwing a party. Mostly, they're trying to just feel normal and avoid the DTs. Not a good state to be in!

Don't misunderstand me, I've got no interest in what anybody pours down their gullet. It's not my body or liver - thank God!

I've heard your life of the party preach before... you sound exactly
like the typical recovering for the umpteenth time AA 12 stepper.

I can see how you might be predisposed to think the worst
of someone who drinks in any amount.

You must get different old ladies in your neck of the woods. We've
got tons who have a single martini, or G&T, or somesuch, or who
get tiddly once a year at a holiday party.

That reminds me. I'm almost out of Bailey's. Time to buy another
bottle.

Nope.

I only saw a few party stores. One upscale food market had
a large wine area separate from the rest of the store. I've only
gone to MI few times and I didn't spend my days visiting liquor stores,
just the random wine/etc to bring to whatever event.

I've only seen supermarkets have wine and beer for sale (not here).
Not hard booze. Personally, I'd rather leave the alcohol sales to
the liquor store and save the shelf space for usual grocery items.
I'm not a fan of ginormous supermarkets.

Yeah, I would have been in my teens then and no particular
reason to visit Michigan.

Why on earth would Steve make such a witless "comparison", one wonders at his thought processes...

Looks like a very nice town you live by, BTW...beautiful country up there.

45-1055 Kamehameha Hwy, according to Google.

Six miles doesn't seem very far to me. I drove farther than that
yesterday to buy decent garlic. (Of course, while I was there,
I picked up a bunch of other stuff that I needed.) Freeway miles,
although I would have taken the surface streets if the freeway
didn't exist.

Your batting record remains unblemished. I don't drink alcohol - period. My brother-in-laws have a pretty big problem with the stuff. I love those guys but it's sad to see them struggle.

I don't preach and I don't judge. What I do is make observations. Feel free to booze it up, pal. In fact, I enjoy your posts more when yoose is loose as a goose.

I don't think the worst of people that drink. Our ex-club president was a guy that would bring wine to the meetings. I never thought ill of the members that drank. I would not have approved of drunk people at the meetings but that never happened.

I understand that 6 miles isn't very far for folks on the mainland. We have a different idea of scale here. That's just the way we were brought up. OTOH, we have some of the worst traffic congestion in the nation so I might not be too off kilter.

It's a bit childish, though. Cars can kill, but that won't stop me from
driving somewhere.

Every time you mention alcohol, you judge and you preach. I guess life
traumatised you.

Here we go again... every time you say that, it means _you're_ taking
it too personal.

I turned 21 in 1966 and never had to show a special LCB card in a State
Store. I understand they did exist when there was no photo on a
driver's license. You could also get one if you had no driver's license

One of the first self serve liquor stores was atthe Woodhavena mall on
Bristol Pike and Woodhaven Road It opened when the mall opened in 1972.
There may have been others before and there were also some not converted
yet a few years later.

I moved out of PA in 1981 and there were quite a few self serve stores
at that time.

Evanston IL, was home to the WCTU, and the city was dry until 1972:

http://www.lib.niu.edu/1992/ii920422.html

"Howard Street, a modest thoroughfare, separates Chicago and Evanston. Though the street itself is not wide, a cultural chasm divides these two neighbors. South of Howard Street lies historically wicked and sinful Chicago, "the town that Billy Sunday couldn't shut down." North of Howard is staid, puritanical Evanston, a town with so much moral rectitude that it once forbade the sale of ice cream sodas on Sundays. That ban reportedly led to the invention of the ice cream Sunday (changed to "sundae" so as not to blaspheme the sabbath). Chicago was Al Capone laughing at Prohibition. Evanston was the Women's Christian Temperance Union (headquartered there) and Frances Williard cheering it.

This article won't discuss whether or not Chicago has gotten any less sinful. But in recent years, demon rum definitely made inroads into Evanston business establishments. Community leaders, fearful of the consequences of increased liquor availability, are mounting efforts to stop it. Others are fighting to increase it, so that they will not be at a competitive disadvantage with neighboring municipalities. It's a battle between the "wets" who think Evanston's liquor laws are hopelessly antiquated and "drys" who claim that the emergence of a teetotaler governor in Illinois is only a symbol of a move away from alcohol that is spreading throughout the nation..."

In 2016 you can now get beer, wine, and liquor at grocery stores, and even World Market. Alcohol is served in restaurants, but there are few "stand - alone" bars that exist primarily to serve alcohol (and this is a college town) No "dive bars", certainly, like you see in Chicago...Evanston doesn't like "riff - raff", apparently.

They don't have to be closed on Sundays anymore unless it's part of a
weird religous culture. I do remember working in retail when the stores
at the mall were only open from 1:00-6:00 on Sunday. Except towards
Chrismas, at which times they were suddenly open more days and hours and
hours later.

PA beer distributors cannot sell less than a full case, bars and delis
cannot sell full cases. They all protect their established turf.

That makes sense. I like the idea of the drive through where you can
get your beer, soda, chips, pretzels and stuff too.
