Default How to keep salt from getting hard?

Yesm there are a million websites that say to use rice in a salt shaker.
But I'm not dealing with a shaker. I buy those 1lb 10oz containers of
salt in the store, fill a shaker and put the large container on the
shelf (with spout closed). The next time I want to fill the shaker, that
big container is hard. Putting rice in there will make a mess when I use
that salt for other needs.

Is there a way to keep those big containers for hardening?

I was wondering about putting tape over the spout ????

Use the desicant capsules from medicine bottles... can also put rice
in a tea infuser.

You can add a muslin bag filled with rice to the salt. Not easy to get in but should be possible.

I use kosher salt only, I tranfer the three pound box to quart mayo
jars... those cardboard boxes suck moisture out of the air, they
should at least have a foil liner. I put a few of those desicant
capsules from medicine bottles in the jars. Can also fill a mesh tea
infuser with rice.

I do put mine in glass jars but that is a jolly good idea to use those
desiccant capsules too! I tend to save them but have never had a use for
them until now

I save them too, and add them to OTC meds that don't have them... I
buy Mucinex 12 hour tablets from Amazon, a 500 tablet bottle for about
$130, that's about half the price of buying those small packets from
the pharmacy... I take four a day, two in the morning, two in the
evening. There's no desicant in the bottle so I add a few.

You should be careful with that stuff. They are finding problems
with people taking it long term, you can't look it up.

I have a lot of meds unfortunately, but they mostly come in bubble packs
these days.

My doctor told me to take them. What's long term, I've been taking
them for ten years. Everything has side effects but often the benefit
is well worth the risk. My doctor knows I take them and checks my
blood work. Occasionally I also take the Mucinex liquid rather than a
cough medicine. Why can't I look it up?

I read a few sites but none said anything about what causes the
disease other than aging, but everyone dies from aging.
