The people that passed these things out are probably Japanese and those candies are Japanese confections. This is what happens when highly excitable people go trick or treating. ![]() |

The people that passed these things out are probably Japanese and those candies are Japanese confections. This is what happens when highly excitable people go trick or treating. ![]() Japanese in rural Illinois? Well, maybe. 2010 census data: The racial makeup of the county was 94.2% white, 0.7% Asian, 0.6% black or African American, 0.3% American Indian, 3.0% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. 34,978 people times 0.7% = 245 Asians of all types. Besides, Japanese candy is wicked expensive in the Midwest. Better to go to Walmart and buy Double Bubble cheaply. Asians are frugal, aren't they? Cindy Hamilton |

The word "Choco" and the green matcha piece are also Japanese style as is the fairly iconic Japanese maple leaf motif. http://slodive.com/wp-content/upload...mampleleaf.jpg |

These are used as gifts and are beautifully boxed and packaged small sweets meant to be given to friends, family, and co-workers. Omiyage is not meant to be given out like this on Halloween. You could choose to bring up more irrelevant stats. You could even choose to believe that there's folks in the Midwest passing out highly polished poisoned Halloween candy products in the hopes of making kids bonkers. The sky's the limit here. Just don't ask me what you're supposed to do in your imaginary scenario. That's just plain bonkers. |

Whoa. Ok, let me rephrase, since the question was earnest. When I receive a gift, it's mine to do with as I please. Eat it, throw it away, re-gift it (which is essentially what giving it away as Halloween candy amounts to), or put it in the closet and make it my heirs' problem. What's the etiquette in your culture? Cindy Hamilton |

Here's the etiquette in my life: Thank them for the gift and at least pretend that it's the best gift ever. If you give it away or just don't ever use, just don't let the giver know that. It can very well offend them. Case in point: About 10 years ago, I ordered and sent a 12" high stuffed "Dogbert" to a friend and his wife. It was a really nice one too. At the time it was appropriate and very appreciated. I'm pretty sure it was a Christmas present. Well, just last June they came for another visit. They gave me back the Dogbert stuffed animal. They said, "He misses you and needed to come home." Really? IMO, they should have just thrown it in the trash or given it to someone else. Even put it in Christmas bin for poor kids. Giving it back to me though actually offended me (I didn't say anything). Seriously, giving it back to me offended me somewhat. Someone sends you a fruitcake for Christmas, you thank them highly and tell them how yummy it was. THEN you can toss it out or re-gift it. Me personally, I like fruitcakes so no problem here. No one sends them here anymore so I always buy one each season. ==================== I agree. The giver should never know that a gift is not appreciated. The act of giving (regardless of the actual gift) is what is to be appreciated. -- http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk |

I agree completely, if you don't like it regift it, or give to Salvation Army Thrift Store, but NEVER let anyone know that you hate the gift, because to me, that's a slap in the face to the person that thought enough of you to even remember you with a gift in the first place. I always told my kids, if someone gives you a dog turd as a gift, you tell them it's the nicest dog turd you've ever seen and thank them. They still laugh about that to this day. ![]() Cheri |
