Oh, that's a good one, Shelly. I have a great husband. What's a "real man"? What are your criteria? Cindy Hamilton |

First Ladys are basically worthless anyway...really. > I've been kind of sort of reading these threads and wondering why Nancy2 is so worried about her knowledge of White House history. Does it take knowledge of a house to move into it? Face it, it's going to be her new home for the next four years. I'm sure they won't give up the penthouse and other places, dinna fret. This thread seems to have something to do with a possibly gaudy re-decorating scheme. Perhaps she won't like the china. She might make the "west wing" look like a brothel. Who cares? Only the first family goes into those rooms. This is a very odd thread. Historically, there's absolutely no reason why the incoming First Lady *should* know anything about the history of the White House other than this is where we live now. Preferable? Of course. I know the White House was burned during the War of 1812 and rebuilt. Is it important for the First Lady to know that? I'm not so sure. Jill ============== +1 -- http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk |

When you look at incomes, education levels and other indications of success, whites are not always at the top of the later. For some reason, blacks and natives tend to be at the bottom of the ladder. That leaves me wondering about the cause and effect issues. Heaven forbid we acknowledge that sometimes there are reasons for stereotypes and that sometimes there are people doing their damnedest to live up to (down to) the stereotype. |

The big success of Germany is the value they put in trade schools. Every society needs tradespeople and good ones, they are the doers and movers as opposed to the Liberal Arts Graduate. |

Well, Jill, thanks for the perspective. I am thinking only of having the proper amount
of respect for an American treasure...but there are many advisors who hang about the WH, and I should not jump to conclusions. We shall see. I have some personal experience with a Russian-language-country native, who married into my family, and I was constantly surprised at her total un-assimilation here, including respect for our practices and culture. (She was an educated woman, a physician in her country). I hope I am pleasantly surprised by Mrs. Trump. N. |

Look at the numbers of high school dropouts. Runs about 10% these days. I've had some apply for a job but all they get is "come back when you have a diploma or GED" |

I've had some apply for a job but all they get is "come >back when you have a diploma or GED" I blame a lot of that on the 'no child must fail' syndrome. Some do and it is best they stay back a year and re-learn and grasp what they didn't do the previous year. Move them on and they definitely won't be able to cope and thus likely become a dropout. |

Thousands of those jobs here in Chicagoland are going begging, manufacturing and engineering firms would like to expand, they simply can't find the skilled workers they need...and now there are training programs specifically for women, they'd be smart to take advantage! I agree 500%. I worked at a National Laboratory for 25 years as a master tool & diemaker. Nat'l Labs are very liberal, they initiated many apprenticeship programs for skilled trades and gave preference to females and minorities. Out of all we tried to train not one took the program seriously, all eventually dropped out, they wasted a lot of resources and their own lives. Had they applied themselves they'd have jobs today paying over $80K plus 20K in OT and great benies. Without toolmakers no society can exist... since the beginning of recorded history there have been only two useful occupations, toolmaker and who http://i67.tinypic.com/4lpm4o.jpg |

They have become fat, lazy, and hope to reap the benefits given to them by the people that came before. The only folks that truly believe are those new Americans and those hoping to become Americans.
