In the future, I also want to get older shelter cats to give them a few last good years. =============== I hope so. Just be warned they often come with 'problems', though can be worked around with plenty of patience. It is to be expected when you hear of the lives some have been forced to lead before being rescued. Even after those few years ... although my Blue lived until she was 17 yo you will find you are very attached and it is a wrench with the time comes. Bonnie was sick when we took her on and only managed to keep her for 11 months, but it is still an awful wrench when they die. Poppy is only approx 7 yo so hopefully we will have her for a while yet ![]() She has plenty of problems but has learned to love us ![]() I noticed you said ... in the future! I waited until I retired until I took my first one. They need a lot of company and love. I didn't want to get one and leave it home alone all day. Good luck when the time comes ![]() -- http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk |

I'd had him since he was a just weaned pup (and I was 21 at the time). It literally broke my heart when the time came. ![]() A year later a cat (Persia) showed up at my back door and *demanded* I let her inside. She lived to be 16 (despite having a myriad of health problems). She died in 2014. At that point I decided I didn't want the heartbreak again. Then in 2015 along came a plea on Dataw to give a couple of cats a home after the owner died. The person who was trying to help find the two (or was it three?) cats homes described her as shy. What was really going on was she was hiding from the other cat! Frankie, a Tonkinese, was a bully. He wouldn't let her get to her food; he beat up on her whenever he could. When I went to meet her the woman had to put Frankie in another room just so I could "meet" Buffy. It took a day or so, but Buffy realized there was no other cat here who was going to try to hurt her. She came out of her shell. It's HER house. ![]() Sheldon often says you need two cats so they can keep each other company. Not true. There is no guarantee they will like each other. I used to cat-sit for a neighbor. The only time they shared space was when they were eating. They didn't play together, sleep together or do anything together. At least they didn't fight! I don't know about ferrets, but I do think Gary should think about adopting another one (or two). Jill |

I hope they'll be around for many more years. I can only imagine the kinds of health and behavioural problems an older pet can have, especially if they've been treated badly. Gary should watch that before choosing a non-live pet. Somewhat related and continuing off topic ... I happened to be watching Antenna TV when some 80s show called Small Wonder came on. It's about an android girl and the family that tries to pass her off as normal. Also extremely bad. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_Wonder_(TV_series) |

The owners/property management company anticipates some damage and charges extra. Renters know this going in. Some places won't allow pets *at all*. I would not live in such a place. Needless to say, the manager took the pet rent off my bill. And I didn't bother to tell her when Persia showed up at my back door demanding to be let in. ![]() Jill |
