I don't know if it heats stuff from the inside to the outside? Some
one told me to position the food up off the bottom while heating so
that the microwaves can get under the food...so I turn a small plate
upside down and sit my cooking vessel on top of that while cooking.

I don't know if it makes any difference or not but I keep doing it :-)

I might try that later, there is still some roast pork with crackling
in the fridge.

And if you don't care about the microwave oven itself, try a CD or DVD
in there and see what happens...

"Why Do Fatty Foods Seem to Reheat Faster in the Microwave?

Water Should Heat Faster than Oil

Recall that microwaves act mainly on water in food, causing the water
molecules to vibrate and rotate, which heats up your food. Microwaves
also affect fats and sugars, but to a much lesser extent than water.
So fats should actually take longer to heat up because they are less
affected by microwave radiation. Practically speaking, this is not
always what we observe when we heat fattier foods.

Consider the Boiling Points

Water has a boiling point of 100°C at sea level, while olive oil, for
example, has a boiling point of 300°C. When you heat up something that
is more fat than water, that food can actually reach a much higher
temperature when heated in the microwave than a watery food.

Even though fats absorb less microwave radiation, since it is easier
to heat fats than it is to heat water, fats actually heat up faster in
the microwave. And since oil boils at a higher temperature than water,
you can heat oil to a much higher temperature, which is why fatty
foods seem to get much hotter than watery foods."

http://www.thekitchn.com/why-do-fatt...crowave-226064

So the explanation seems to be fats can reach a *higher* temperature
than water, rather than heating *faster* than water. So my knowledge
of physics remains correct

Usually 120+ For me that is a comfortable eating temperature. If I
make a platter of leftovers or a lunch container I try to keep things
spread out evenly. You don't want a big pile of mashed potatoes and a
thin slice of meat.

Wow. Why go to that kind of trouble when you are just reheating?

I use a crude sort of instant read thermometer when I reheat things....
my finger.

Takes 3 seconds and I know the inside is hot. OTOH, I don't do it on
everything. My lunches at work take 90 seconds. Never had to go back
for more heat, never checked before eating once I did the first three
lunches. Every lunch I make has about the same amount of food and is
about the same thickness.

When I reheat in the microwave, I use what others have said...feel the
bottom of the plate or bowl. And feel all of the bottom, not just the
middle if you have a few different things on the plate. Some items heat
faster than others. Cold mashed potatoes seem to heat up the slowest.

I also reheat food in steps. Heat up, let it sit, heat again, let it
sit...
If your food is in a bowl, cover it.

I do that way too but not just in the center. Feel all of the bottom.

I have an old microwave that was not a super duper microwave to begin
with and I rarely reheat for more than a minute, but I don't do an
entire lunch in it either. Reheating an occasional cup of chili or
plate of pasta is about the extent of it, so touching the bottom of
the container or plate tells me when it's heated through.

My microwave is circa 1987. I certainly don't bring out a thermometer
to tell when something is hot. I can usually tell if just by passing my
hand over the top of the (always covered to prevent splatters) bowl/plate.

Believe it or not I like to feel all of her bottom too, I'm not just a
boobs man yoose know. Anyways after so many years of heating foods in
the nuker I can judge damned accurately how much time to punch in to
reheat a half mug of coffee (40 seconds) or to heat a pound package of
frozen veggies (ten minutes with a stir halfway), four minutes per
potato or per corn on cob, etc. My nuker is very old (30+ yrs) so
it's not nearly as powerful as moderns, but after all this time I know
how to drive it same as I know my 1990 car.
