I have a Win 10 tablet/convertible. It's not very enjoyable to use. The OS makes it feel sluggish and ponderous. I have a Win 7 laptop which I use for programming widgets. It's OK but the battery life is dismal. For those of you that can't give up Windows, this might be a good product for you. https://www.extremetech.com/computin...one-right-time |

Speaking of windows... Someone gave me a Passat but the window wasn't working so I ordered a cheap Chinese door panel with the window regulator already mounted. It works fine except those guys leave the sheet metal with razor sharp edges. So my fingers are all cut up. That's another thing wrong with the Chinese! |

My new laptop has Win10, and after ditching the extra crap I don't use, I really like it. But,
I don't do anything technical on it. My requirements are pretty simple. My previous Win7 worked great, but the cover hinge is shot, so it won't close correctly. It is free for the asking; also, it has to be used plugged in because the battery died a long time ago. It is about 6 years old; the Geek Squad was astounded that it was still working well. ;-)) N. |

I believe a new battery would be about $200 or more. My feeling is, it is
not worth it....it works fine, and while I was using it, keeping it plugged in was no problem. It was too heavy to really use anywhere except at a desk. But thanks, sf. ;-)) N. |

Jill, keeping it plugged in all the time will kill the battery for good, if it hasn't already....
unless it is a rare breed my various ITS guys have never heard of. Once a laptop battery won't hold a charge any more, then by all means keep it plugged in all the time. In your case, if you cannot imagine ever needing to run it off the battery (like if the power goes out in a storm or something), then keeping it plugged in all the time is no problem. We all do what we like and don't need to answer to anyone. My statement about battery life is for anyone who didn't know that about battery life, and is not a criticism of you. ;-)) N. |

My laptop is at least 6 years old and is still going strong. (It's a Toshiba, in case anyone cares.) No, I don't move it around so I have no need to run it off the battery. Wifi doesn't work well here but at any rate I simply don't need to move it. I use it as a desktop because of where my desk is located. It's a small desk in the corner of the living room. A laptop takes up less room than a small tower. 17" display, crystal clear. But I cannot stand typing on a cramped laptop keyboard. Or use one of those silly touchpad mouses. So I have it set up *like* a destop, but mostly for the monitor. At any rate, it stays plugged in. If the power goes out (rarely) the battery will kick in. At that point I turn the computer off because I can't access anything online during a power outage. Why leave it running? You do know there is an icon in the desktop tray that tell you whether or not the battery is charged? I've never had to replace the battery in this laptop. I did have to swap out the "charger" once. Oh, and FWIW, the people from the "Geek Squad" at Best Buy likely just wanted to sell you something new. I think they work on comission. Jill |

Jill, I get my really-needed advice from a couple of campus ITS guys, and use the Geek Squad
only for help with software issues, usually...and they answer questions for free if it is something I purchased at BBuy. N. |
