Default lentil soup for dinner

I just put a frozen ham bone and some frozen smoked ham drippings in
the pressure cooker with some celery, onion, carrot. The pressure
cooker will pull all the flavor from that meaty bone. I'll strain the
odds and ends from the resulting broth and add the lentils, onion,
celery, carrot and potatoes. I'm looking forward to dinner. I made
fresh bread today as well. Although the sun is shining and the fog is
gone, it is very cold. Soup sounds good, doesn't it? Maybe baked
apples for dessert.

Great minds! I made multi-bean soup today. Used half a box of
chicken stock, lots of water, some onion a lot of garlic... and cooked
it for a couple of hours. Added a smallish turnip fresh from my
son-in-law's garden, cut into small dice + the leaves/stems and a
teaspoon of bacon fat. Served it with buttermilk cornbread. Yum!

I made some French Canadian pea soup on the weekend and used a nice
meaty smoked ham hock. It turned out great and has made a couple of
great lunches so far and there is enough for a few more.

It all sounds good! I thought I'd knock back a few and make wienies,
kielbasa, Clausen's sauerkraut, a Granny Smith apple and celery seed
into my version of a well known dinner. Oh! And with Texas Toast.
We are supposed to get a atmospheric river coming through tomorrow and
for a few days. It used to be called a pineapple express. We'll take
all the water we can get, anytime we can get it.
I can't imagine what a atmospheric river might cause by colliding with
a polar vortex. Stay tuned.
I just love these new-age meteorologic terms for ancient phenomena.

sounds good, except I wouldn't have added water to the chicken stock.
I like a heartier flavor.

O.k., I'm going to have to try that. Pretty sure I will like it but I
will have to hide the making of it from my husband. He'll probably
eat it if he doesn't know there is an unconventional ingredient in
there. Thanks for the recipe.

What kind of lentils did you use? I generally use the little red/orange
ones.
I made a really tasty potato and leek soup the other day. Diced
potatoes, thinly sliced leeks, diced celery, a bay leaf, salt and white
pepper. Simmered in water to cover. When soft, bay leaf removed, milk
added, pureed with a stick blender, small diced precooked potato added.
Served with a swirl of cream, freshly snipped parsley, and small dice of
smoked back bacon.
It looked pretty and was delicious.
Home baked brown bread to go with it.

Leftover lentil soup for lunch today.

The term "atmospheric river" dates from about 20 years ago. "Polar
vortex" dates from the 1950s, if memory serves. Both terms
originated in meteorology rather than the popular press.

Given the age of most posters here, 20 years ago would be "new".

I just used the common brown lentils -- it's what I had in the house.
Weather like this, I go shopping in my deep freeze and my pantry. Your
potato chowder sounds wonderful. I'll put that on my list for after
the holidays.

I have always liked lentil soup made by others, but attempts have been

It's so easy! Stock, vegetables, meat for seasoning. I don't own a
pressure cooker and can't think of any reason to need to pressure cook
lentils. They're not tough like dried beans.

I didn't pressure cook the lentils (soup) I used the pressure cooker
to get all the goodness out of the meaty bone for stock. Besides, the
bone was frozen.

My vomit is usually not as homogeneous as lentil soup. YMMV.

I still wouldn't have used a pressure processor for a meat bone, I'd
have started it simmering earlier and then added ingredients, why have
an extra pot to clean.

Showing your lack of knowledge again. You can use a pressure cooker for the
bone. Then leave the vent open to finish the soup without pressure. Still
giving you one pot to clean.
