True. I never saw one piece of gum anywhere there. The place almost
looked too clean, if that's possible.

The cleanest place I ever saw was Penang, Malaysia.

I certainly don't do that! I don't let the car ashtray get so full that
I feel I need to dump it when I'm driving. When we were driving down
here in my car I kept a bag in the car and would empty the ashtray into
it and toss the bag in a garbage can at rest stops.

I imagine Penang would be similar to Singapore in that way. It would
make an interesting stopover when I next go to Phnom Penh.

Because it's a difficult habit to break. Nicotene is an addictive
substance. I don't smoke all that much. FWIW, there is not an ash tray
in the bedroom. I have *never* smoked while in bed. There isn't an ash
tray in the kitchen, either. I mostly smoke when I'm in front of the
computer answering questions like this. Or watching television. Half a
pack a day at most. I know it's bad for me. I don't need a lecture.

I didn't know you smoked and if you hadn't mentioned it in your post
I'd never know, but I gave no lecture. Being an ex smoker I know it's
difficult to quit... have you seriously tried?

It took me several tries before it took. I used nicotine tablets for awhile
afterward, easy to get hooked on those too, but you'll quit when you're
ready, or not. This is my meter now.

Seven years, two weeks, six days, 21 hours, 16 minutes and 2 seconds.

Don't let it bother you Jill. Most non or exsmokers get their nuts off
by preaching to others. There are exceptions who understand but don't
expect it here.

Sixteen years, 5 months, and 17 days since I quit.

I don't preach, been there and had everybody and their dog
lecturing me like I can't read or didn't know it was bad
for me. There nothing worse than a former smoker zealot.
I had gotten up to 3 packs per day.

7 years, 2 months, 7 days -- cold turkey. Never looked back. Dr.
said I needed a chest X-ray because he thought there was a spot there.
I said to myself that if I get out of this o.k., I'm never smoking
again. I had tried for years and was only marginally successful up
until then. Great incentive.

Got that right! Sheldon is a perfect example of "no tolerance" for others.
Geez, I wonder what he does if he sees someone smoking while driving past
his house, does he chase them on his tractor and try to run them into a
ditch? ;-)

Unfortunately, it took not being able to breathe for me. Gasping for air is
no fun.

That's what they want you to think. The tobacco companies want you to
think it so you will keep smoking. Then there are the therapists and
drug companies with therapies and drugs to help you beat the habit. They
want you to think it is so addictive that you can't quit without their
help. Accepting that it is an addiction is just a cop out. When I was
younger just about everyone smoked. Very few of us do now.

My oldest brother smokes about a pack a week. He keeps looking for help
to quit smoking. If I smoked as little as he does I would not be worried
about it. What I can't figure is how he can go 3-4 days without
bothering to smoke and not have the willpower to stop completely. It's
not like the typical smoker who can't go more than a couple hours
without smoking.

Around 13 years for me. I never could see the point of getting really
exact about the timing. I think it was the fall of 2003 when I quit,
but I could be wrong.

Only reason I remember the exact date is because the summer of
2000 brought MANY changes for me and stopping smoking was one
of the biggest changes.

I quit cold turkey and have had no tobacco products since. But
when I see one of the old black and white movies with Bette
Davis, Lauren Bacall, etc. light up I take that first long, slow
draw with them. Satisfies that imagined need for a cigarette.

:-)

I've never smoked, but my mother did. She tried a number of things
to quit over the years, but the doctor prescribing nitroglycerine
did it for her. That must have been more than 20 years ago,
since IIRC she was about the age I am now when she quit.

Got that right! Sheldon is a perfect example of "no tolerance" for others.
Geez, I wonder what he does if he sees someone smoking while driving past
his house, does he chase them on his tractor and try to run them into a
ditch? ;-)

I just thought I would throw in a wee boast here ... I stopped smoking 43
years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter. I had learned it was bad
for the baby so I stopped ... sounds as though it was easy ... NO!!!!!! I
suppose I had a good incentive to stop so I kept at it, but I would never
want to go through that again!

Thanks, Cheri. It was more a case of NEED rather than choice)
