Needed a few things for Christmas dinner, so hit Von's
at about 1pm. OMG!!

EVERY checkstand was manned, and EACH OF THEM had a line
ALL the way to the back of the store, and it's a BIG store!

At least 20 carts in each line. But mostly people were
dealing with it well, much better than on the roads.

Biggest problem was that by 1pm, MANY items were already
empty shelves.

Same here but it's snowing hard and there was a monster
pile up on the highway to Banff.

Makes you wonder if all those folks had been in a coma and
just awoke to realize this week-end is Christmas.

I was in two different grocery stores today and, as crowded as they
were, the lines were very short and we were in and out quickly.

I think everything is done now, so there is not need to risk the last
minute crowds tomorrow.

We were going to run out just to Walmart because it was the closest to
get cat food. (squirrels and raccoons pigged out - ) We got in the
truck and it started to seriously snow. We looked at it for a couple
of minutes and just went back inside. Getting out of here is a PITA
because there is a slight incline up to a stop sign then immediately
left and downhill with a stop at the bottom. Just didn't want to
mingle with other drivers and kiss paint. Snowed hard all day and
just finished shoveling. Maybe tomorrow . . .

We passed a mall and 20 miles away a Wal Mart ab about 3PM today. The
cats would starve if I had to go to either of those stores today.
Parking lots filled.

Maybe, but it isn't going to show up in the next day or so. I only
have to feral cats that mostly sit around on their dog pillow. I
generally get my cat food at Costco. The roads were just to rough to
go cross town today. Merry Christmas, Sheldon

Oh, and what I forgot to mention..

We had over an inch of rain yesterday,
and are expecting 1-2.5 inches starting later
tonight and running all day tomorrow.

So being prepared IS a good thing.

I order enough to last the month and always order more than I need, I
never get to where it's an emergency... I actually keep at least a
month's worth ahead. I do the same with people foods... if it's
something I know we will use that's not perishable and it's on sale
I'll buy 3-4. Last week orange marmalade was on sale at half the
usual price, I bought four jars. I like orange marmalade as aspread
but I also use it as a cooking ingredient in orinetal dishes, it's
even good in salad dressings... I use it for baking too, excellent in
chocolate cake/brownies.

I ran out for a few things myself today (those little things that always
seem to be forgotten) and wow...I usually hit the stores at around 6 A.M.
but today was later in the morning, raining like crazy, and people were just
everywhere, I can't remember the last time I have seen a food store that
crowded, but nothing to do but put a smile on your face and wait, tis the
season. Fa la la la.

I went to the s/m yesterday and as I approached the entrance, a woman
come out with groceries. I said to her: "You've forgotten something!"
She immediately looked concerned, then I said: "You're bound to have
forgotten something!" and she hooted with laughter:-)

One of the nicer aspects of being retired: my supermarket opens at 7 AM and
I'm usually there by 7:05. Even on holidays, pre-holidays,and forecasted
next-day blizzards, it's usually just me and a few other members of the
Grey Brigade.

Many years ago, grocery stores here were open 24 hours a day,
and I drove a cab at night, so grocery shopping at 3 am was
VERY easy, and never a crowd. Days long gone, in all ways.

Maybe they had to wait for their paycheck before they could
get groceries.

I had to get my car battery replaced before I could go grocery
shopping. I was there around 11 am, and it was crowded, but
not insane.

Could have been worse. If I'd tried to go grocery shopping Thursday
after work, I'd have been stranded at the grocery store. As it
was, I got home before the car decided it wasn't going to turn
over one more time.

You don't want to run out of that!

? I get free delivery over $49.

I like getting the cat food by the case and avoid having to pick
out individual cans from the supermarket display, and not have
to worry about running out.

My ferals will not eat canned food. What they know from infancy is
dry food and by golly, that is what they eat. And, by the way, don't
you dare change brands on them!!! I'll have enough food through
Tuesday. We've been vigilant and no squirrel or raccoon has raided
the food. I'll put bread and apples out for the wildlife.

I always buy canned cat food by the case. But when I order from
Chewy.com I order enough canned for the entire month plus a bit
extra... also dry food, and cat litter... also a 14 lb sack of
Friskies kitten chow to use as treats, a lot less pricy than those
tiny bags of treats and all cats like it, just don't give more than a
few kibbles to indoor cats as they are caloric.... the outdoor cats
get a soupbowlful and don't gain an ounce. The prices at Chewy.com
are lower than anywhere else I've bought from, and it's easy to go
over $75 when buying a month's worth, or you can set up for a delivery
every two months. Check it out and compare prices, not just free
delivery minimum.

Interestingly, I hit two stores - a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's - last night around "rush hour", e.g. 5:30 to 6:30, both were practically empty. Just finished at another place this Christmas Eve Saturday morning, not busy at all. It's a new place (to me), so I had plenty of time to browse, lots of interesting Balkan/East European goods, and I ordered several things at the butcher counter for New Year's holiday weekend. Hit a nice new "Dollar Store" adjacent, everything is a dollar, so I got a big load of stuff for like $15.00, useful items that elsewhere I would have paid probably $40.00 for...

Like you, I hate crowds, so I try to hit the shops very early or whatever....one thing that I LOVE is Amazon Prime and Prime Now, I order most of my bulky/staple goods from there. That way, my grocery shopping time can be spent on shopping for the "fun" stuff like fresh meat, produce, etc....

My work mates at my new job love to cook, they are from Mexico, Africa, India, etc;, so they know all of the "out - of - the - way" ethnic places, butchers and such in town, that are "authentic" and also fantastically cheap....so on weekends I will be making some forays to these places.

I loathe shopping in general, but I do have fun food shopping...

It's just that I'm confused why they ship free to me for
$49 minimum order, and you $75.

Interestingly, I hit two stores - a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's - last
night around "rush hour", e.g. 5:30 to 6:30, both were practically empty.
Just finished at another place this Christmas Eve Saturday morning, not busy
at all. It's a new place (to me), so I had plenty of time to browse, lots
of interesting Balkan/East European goods, and I ordered several things at
the butcher counter for New Year's holiday weekend. Hit a nice new "Dollar
Store" adjacent, everything is a dollar, so I got a big load of stuff for
like $15.00, useful items that elsewhere I would have paid probably $40.00
for...

Like you, I hate crowds, so I try to hit the shops very early or
whatever...one thing that I LOVE is Amazon Prime and Prime Now, I order most

Heh yes, I enjoy food shopping but not the other sort We order a lot on
line too. We could do that with grocery shopping too but I prefer to choose
my own fresh food.

All the cats I've ever had have eaten dry cat food with the exception
of one many, many years ago. After he was gone I vowed never to start
a cat out on canned food again. Pema, the fostered cat, does get a
small can as a treat every 2 or 3 weeks and I have to listen to her
whine for another 2 or 3 days after wanting another can.

I do have about a dozen 3 pound bags of different brands and flavors
of dry kibble. I'll layer about 5 or 6 different varieties into a
drop feeder so she never gets bored with her vittles.

But you're feeding a bunch of indoor cats as well as some of the outdoor
ones. Nancy has one cat. Me, too. Spending $75 might make sense if
you've got 4-5 cats in the house (litter included) plus feeding some
outdoor cats. Doesn't really make sense to spend that much in one month
just for a one-cat household.

And I'm with Nancy in asking, why do you have to spend $75 to get free
shipping when she can get it for $49? Or are you just saying that's
what you spend, shipping aside, because you have so many cats?

LOL! It's funny how, for a moment, she thought you just *knew* she'd

My oldest brother worked the third shift at some company years ago. He
loved going grocery shopping when he got off his shift around midnight.
That's when they'd start marking things down (the infamous "used meat"
comes to mind). Back then you could buy store made pizzas in a 2-pack;
they'd be marked half price after midnight. And nope, there weren't a
lot of people in the store at that hour.

I could be wrong. I'm not who places the orders, I do the unpacking
and putting away. I also deal with all the packaging materials.

GLyN has certain flavors he likes, and others he doesn't,
and he's NOT shy about letting me know I got the wrong one.

Gotcha. Didn't mean to let the cat out of the bag. Hee.

They do ship fast. No complaints about the price, either.

Funny. It finally dawned on me my cat only likes the pate
style. Now I know she doesn't like any kind with liver (that's
my girl!). I try to get whatever kind the means i don't wind up
scraping half of it into the trash.

My guys prefer the pate too, and they like the ones with shrimp best,
they also like grilled.

The grill feast/whatever seems to be the winner here.

That is a big reason I like ordering by the case, I really
don't like standing in the aisle, is this kind pate? What
flavor is this one? and 2 other people are trying to do the
same.

Strangely enough, GLyN won't touch egg or cheese flavored cat food,
OR human versions of those.

He prefers chicken, fish, turkey, and even beef.

The only human food he'll touch is roast beef or pastrami lunch
meat, milk, whipped cream, and ice cream.

I haven't even tried those. It's a crapshoot trying to figure
out which they might like.

Sounds like people I know!

Cocoa's all about pot roast, chicken, oatmeal cookies, cake,
any kind of cured meat like salami. Hard cheese. She likes
people food. She gets bits and pieces, I can't lie. Not too
much. She feels she deserves to taste what we're having for
dinner.

Cats are funny.

Thanks for asking! The reason I even have any thoughts on canned
food is that the vet said she needs a can a day instead of dry.
Much lower carb. Never did spoil a cat like this.

After checking out the calories in the different food she gets,
trying to figure out if there was one culprit, we started restricting
the dry stuff we leave out and I'm happy to say she's looking
thinner already.

I haven't weighed her yet, but I think the vet will be happy
next time we bring her in.

Out of 4 ferrets, Jackie (the 3rd one) was the only one I
got as a baby and not an older rescue. Think about it though,
she was taken from the litter and lived all alone in a cage
in a pet store. That's also a rescue, albeit a very expensive one.

Anyway, we bonded immediately and she only always wanted to taste
any new food that I made. The other ferrets weren't interested in
much human food.

Each dinner, Jackie was right there with me, checking out all the
food on the plate. I didn't mind. We shared household germs anyway.
I let her eat what she wanted. She was so cool.

She liked raw corn on the cob.
