Facebook is providing an awesome service for the intelligence community - photos of people with their names attached. If you have a database with names and faces and their associations with other people, places, and things, you'll going to be able to do seemingly magical things. With a big enough database you could put input a few names, places, and objects, and return a single name. It's freakin' magic! Evildoers beware!

Cheri...I didn't refer to Wertz as "The Dwarf". What happened was:
He was complaining that a VietNamese (spelling) Food forum wouldn't let him
join their group...I replied to that situation.
I don't remember the exact wording but it was in the vein of GOOD FOR THEM, I
WOULDN'T EITHER...and gave some reasons. Anyway Christine Dabney took exception and berated me for expressing my opinion and began the disbarment. Game
over and really I don't a hoot.

This just goes to show that Usenet doesn't operate like the rest of the world. You can't get kicked off. One can certainly get their asses kicked off of Google Groups but I can't say that I disagree with their choices.

It was only a matter of time before you were kicked off, because
sooner or later someone would have brought up haricots verts.

OK, sorry I took Sheldon at his word. Sounds like it wasn't a big reason to
boot you, but then if people want only peace and harmony there, they should
have it.

Ahh clever girl

Many years ago I joined at the request of a friend. I remember having
endless posts from FB and it was awful. In the end I just ignored them all
and never went back. Eventually they stopped and I was rather worried that
when GD put me on, that it would start all over again, but it was lovely to
find, it didn't)

One of my wife's co-workers at the hospital posted a video of himself doing a backflip into the ocean. He was out on disability at the time. Social media and electronic records are wonderful helps for investigators.

Your isp or employer can certainly prevent you from posting to Usenet. You just don't use those channels.

Basically, don't post anything on social media you would not want your employer to see...I use the "Would I hire me?" metric.

Crime - wise, here in Chicawgo, gang members/criminals get busted, eventually for the "evidence" they stoopidly post on FB, making gang signs, bragging, etc....

Of course this happens to city/municipal employees, too, especially those who claim disability, but FB posts show them mountain climbing, cavorting in the surf in Hawaii, gambling at swank locales, etc...BUSTED...!!!

The local transport authorities here have been known to monitor
certain Facebook pages where ppl try to sell cars with 'illegal'
modifications. They sometimes send letter out instructing ppl to bring
their cars in for a 'roadworthy'.

A few users have taken other users to court too. But, by and large
consequences from Usenet are very rare and those affected are
invariably extremely stupid and thoughtless.

I only see people on other people's "Friends" list. When it bothers
me enough, I'll reinstall Facebook purity on the new computer. Unlike
certain posters here, I seem to be capable of configuring FB to the
point that minor annoyances like that aren't a big problem (to date).

I'm sure she did. Just be sure to uncheck "notifications" for all of
your groups. If you want a quiet news feed, you can also unfollow
anyone/everyone without unfriending them. That way their posts stay
out of your news feed - but you can catch up any time by going to
their wall/page (whatever it's called now) and reading it there.

It's not that hard to look at a few settings. If you can't do that,
how are you coping with a computer at all?

That's the great thing about wrong doers. They just have to blab about their capers, exploits, and misdeeds. In the end, they'll usually get it in the end.

To be so totally tied into your computer and cell phone is
disingenuous.

In the USA, laws have been passed by many states, including Illinois
(effective 1/1/2017), that prohibit any company/employer and
'educational institution' from requesting any potential employee for
their username(s) and password(s) to any _personal_ email and social
media accounts such as FB, LinkedIn and the like. If one is curious,
here are a couple of links . . .

http://www.ncsl.org/research/telecom...passwords.aspx

or
http://tinyurl.com/jv9ha2f

and

https://www.illinois.gov/idol/about/...2016-Laws.aspx
or
http://tinyurl.com/gwyrx5m
(see "Public Act 99-0610 (HB4999) – Work
Privacy Social Media")

The amended Illinois law [Public Act 99-0610 (HB4999)] in part states:

(begin quote)
Summary: Amends Section 10 of the Right to Privacy in the Workplace Act
by expanding the online accounts that employers and prospective
employers are prohibited from accessing. Prohibits not only an
employer gaining access to these personal online accounts, but now
prohibits the employer from:
1. requesting, requiring or coercing any employee or prospective
employee to authenticate or access an account while the employer is present
2. require or coerce an employee to invite an employer to join a
group affiliated with the personal online account
3. require or coerce the employee to join an online account
established by the employer or add the employer to the employee’s list
of contacts in the employee’s personal account.
(end quote)

Of course, it is unwise to post and/or share anything online that
might/could come back to detrimentally haunt the author.

They shouldn't be using a cell phone and should keep their computer
turned off. Of course, in this age of information - every company
under the sun has anything they want to know about them already.

Groups aren't one size fits all and obviously that wasn't the group
for you. You find the groups that suit you, if they don't - then drop
out. Not surprised to hear you found a political group that was
hyper focused on one POV. People don't usually start them to hear all
sides of an issue, they start them to find like minded individuals.

LinkedIn is much harder to delete than FB, IMO. It took me about six
tries before I got rid of all the LinkedIn notifications...and I never signed up
with that thing in the first place.

Yes, that is very true, but it was supposedly a group for all political
points of view, MS chat 2.5, it was the moderator that was a pain, but he
wasn't there all the time since moderators changed, which was fine, but when
he was...it was just ridiculous.

Once you get through the withdrawl you'll realize life is much better
without Facebook. All social media for that matter.

Agree that it is mostly useless or worse than useless in the way most
people make use of it.

I'm back on there at the instance of an overseas friend as a method of
communication. I'd prefer good old email, but... oh well. FB *can* be
useful though, for things such as for sale groups or researching
things. I'm finding it invaluable at the moment for researching into
moving overseas full or part time, for example.

The same applies to the telephone. It's all in how you use it.
