Default Winter time soup making

I found a nice piece of chuck in the used meat bin at the market this week. A couple of days ago I made braised beef with it. Today it's starting to snow again and I thought about my favorite Winter soup, beef and barley.

So I rummaged around in the freezer and vegetable bins and came up with bits and pieces . I cooked off the barley earlier in the day, let it cool and then rinsed it to get rid of most of the starch.

It made a nice big pot of soup and it's yummy and comforting on a cold Winter's day.
Nice New Year's Eve supper.

I enlarged it but still can't be sure I'm seeing any mushrooms, I see
green peas and what looks like green beans. My beef barley mushroom
looks very different, yours has a much darker broth, mine is more rife
with barley... you can click it twice to enlarge:

Sounds delightful!

We have been munching down the Hoppin' John here.

I have more bread going for next week. (posting recipe in the
alt.bread.recipes in a minute).

Yours looks yummy. As I stated, though, I made a just throw it together beef and barley soup from bits and pieces out of the freezer and vegetable drawer. Maybe I should call it beef-barley-vegetable soup. There are mushrooms right there on top of the mound on the spoon.

I can bring my own spoon if you'd be kind enough to furnish
me with a bowl.

It was a softer dough than the ones usually used for Monkey Bread so
it sort of grew together. Monkey bread dough is meant to be handled a
lot in the dough stage and then pulled apart so it never really grows
together. I like the approach for your bread. So often cheese in
bread means the bread itself is marginal or bad. I looked at the
crumb in your recipe picture and it looks like real bread. It's the
method that is interesting and overcomes some problems with making
this kind of bread.

Next time try a couple of "stretch and folds" during the initial rise.
Since I started doing S&Fs for all my breads, the crumb has improved
markedly.
