If you asked me 18 hours ago I probably could have looked it up (I won't even try using google groups). The database for RFC in my copy of Agent got completely corrupted yesterday. The only posts I had were all from 1970 with 0 lines. Had to happen sooner or later, this copy of Agent is so old (and database so big). I think it was originally V.4, plus I've done so many mad experiments on it with a hex editor I'm amazed it still works at all. It'll soon be time to start with a fresh copy of Agent. I'm hoping it'll hold up until I build a new PC, as this one is getting a little old/slow now. |

It *is* based on an actual hotel in Colorado called 'The Stanley'. He changed the name to 'The Overlook' in the book and subsequent movie. The film was not one of Mr. Kings "shining moments" (pardon the pun!). His books are so long they don't often translate well to film. The Amityville Horror was merely an alleged haunting, sensationalized by a few grade B movies. Tons of remakes. They all sucked. ![]() I've actually encountered a ghost on at least one occasion. Wasn't anything like the movie fiction with dead girls in a hotel hallway or Jack Nicholson wielding an axe. No blood running down walls. No scary pig faces in a window, either. If you'd like, I'll tell you about it, even though it's way past Halloween. ![]() Whoever posted as the faux Andy is in poor taste and not getting quite the response intended. Jill |

It was the former caretaker's cottage behind what used to be a moderate plantation house in west TN. I was there by myself, putting up some shelf paper and cleaning the kitchen. I could see out the kitchen window down the driveway. It was a nice Spring day in April. I had the windows and doors open while I did some cleaning up in the kitchen at the back. There was a wooden screen door at the front with a squeaky rusty spring. I was alone at the back of the house when I heard the rusty spring, heard the door open, then heard it thump shut. I heard heavy footsteps walking through the front room, towards the bedroom (which was in the middle of the house). I called out, "Michael? I'm back here!" Nothing. I looked out the side kitchen window. No cars in the driveway. I went back to whatever I was doing. Then I heard the screen door spring again. And the wooden door again, thump. And again, heavy steps walking into the front room. There was no one there. I was suddenly filled with a feeling of dread. I literally got goosebumps. I knew I wasn't alone in that place. I exited via the side kitchen door and walked home to my parents house which was not far away. A few days later I met the two middle aged women (I think they were cousins) who owned the property and lived together in the main house. According to family legend, a man who was a caretaker there in the 1950's believed his wife was having an affair with one of the farm workers. He allegedly got drunk and in a rage came home and stabbed her to death. Sorry, I don't have any citations. All I know is I refused to ever spend time alone in that place again. Jill |

Most movies made from books are though. Not enough time to follow the book very well. If you liked Stephen King books, check out books by Dean Koontz. Much scarier. One review said he's like SK grown up. I don't read any of those anymore but I did for a while years ago. PS - the original book, Amityville Horror, was also pretty scary but not the movies. |

Bernie is a bumbling detective and Chet is his dog. I adore them and wish Quinn wrote more of them. The titles give clue to the slightly warped mind behind them -- 'A Fistful of Collars,' 'To Fetch a Thief', 'Thereby hangs a Tail, etc. You see most of the story through the eyes and mind of Chet. I heard the chimes in the clock tower, only to be told by the caretaker (docent?) "There haven't been chimes in that clock in 30 years." Allegedly the church was haunted by a former caretaker/docent. One of his jobs was to make sure the clock was running. (The church was built in the 1800's.) A friend and I were downtown early in the morning. I was dropping off a computer monitor at the church. There had been a call out on the radio for anyone who might have a spare monitor or computer equipment... the church was setting up a school for homeless children. We got there around 9:30AM. When my friend and I heard the chimes we looked up at the clock face. The hands read 1:05. We both commented oh, that's not the right time. The new caretakers told us that's what time the former caretaker died. (That could be a tall tale, no way to prove anything.) He said he and his wife sometimes heard him sweeping down the stone steps from the upper gallery. All I know is it was creepy. The man carried the monitor I'd brought inside and his wife showed us the lovely holiday baskets they'd made for the children. It was very nice. But also a bit creepy. A clock that chimes with no works? With the hands not on the hour? Sadly, the church burned to the ground in 2006. I don't recall if any cause was ever determined although I think they did rule out arson. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/fire-des...emphis-church/ Jill |

Only the minds of gullible believers are haunted:-) Things that go bump in the night should be investigated. I used to have an OCD spector washing their hands in the bedroom bath at night. I first assumed that my wife had come home from work and was washing her hands in the bathroom sink. After this went on for quite a while, I got up and checked to see what the problem was. What a surprise to see nobody there. After mulling on this for a while, it was ascertained that this was caused by the interaction between a fan and the sound of car tires on rain soaked streets outside the bedroom. I heard this startling phenomenon on numerous occasions. I haven't heard this in years because I simply moved the fan. Too bad, I miss that hand-washing ghost. ![]() |

I don't recall if any cause was ever determined although I think they did rule out arson. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/fire-des...emphis-church/ Jill === Good grief ![]() -- http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk |

The place rents out storage lockers. He said he saw the famous spirit while he was up on a ladder changing light bulbs. The lockers are open on the top and he saw a woman with long hair slowly rise, look around, and then slowly descend all floaty like. I never knew he wrote those. Shawshank Redemption is a good movie but I never would have guessed that SK wrote. I was a big fan of his books back over 30 years ago. Haven't kept up with what he's done since then. One of my daughter's babysitters used to live near him in Maine....said his house looked creepy like a haunted house. I saw him give a talk here at the library about 35 years ago. He had a cold but he said, "I shouldn't be here and I should be in bed, but no worries, I'm taking plenty of vitaman B." Then he opened up his sports coat and both sides had 3 pockets lined with beer cans. LOL. I thought that was funny but reading a few days later in the newspaper, lots of people got offended by that joke, thinking it was very inappropriate. sigh. |

I guess because I knew the ending. The acting wasn't great, it was all about the plot. I don't remember seeing Stand By Me so I probably didn't. I'm not a big movie fan, the last time I saw a movie at a theater was many years ago, it was Sophie's Choice. |

I think Stand By Me is so good because it reminds a lot of people about their own coming of age. I love movies, but I don't care to go to the movies, so I rent a lot of movies that interest me when they release. Last week I watched Sully, which I enjoyed. Also Papa Hemingway in Cuba was good, very interesting and beautiful scenery. Cheri Cheri |

She also heard the clock chime. We both noted the incorrect time on the clock face. So no, it wasn't some delusion due to a misguided religious belief, as graham suggests. It actually happened. Of course it could have been a prank pulled by the [then] caretaker. I can't figure out why he would do that, though. He and his wife had no idea I was going to drop by any sort of donation for the school. I had no prior affiliation with the church. <shrug> Jill |

Even > with the same director. > > -sw > Agreed. I didn't see any similarities in those two films, either. 'The Green Mile' involved more of the supernatural (typical King) than 'Shawshank' did. BTW, the original SHORT STORY by King was called 'Rita Heyworth and the Shawshank Redemption'. This due to the pinup poster on the prison cell wall. Regarding 'The Green Mile' (great book, IMHO), here's a question. Who knows who played the elderly 'Paul Edgecomb' (Tom Hanks' character) in the film? I do. His name was Dabs Greer. He showed up in a lot of old TV shows. He was a character actor, never really a lead. According to IMDB: "Greer's last role in a long and successful career, was in the hit movie, The Green Mile. He shared the starring role with Tom Hanks--Hanks as the younger version, Greer as the much older version--of lead character, Paul Edgecomb. Greer's character narrates throughout the entire film. It is from Greer's p.o.v. and memory flashbacks that the entire tale unfolds. He was 82 years old." There wasn't a Mr. Jingles (the mouse on the mile!) in 'The Shawshank Redemption', either. The composer Thomas Newman did the music for 'The Green Mile'. I love the soundtrack. ![]() Jill |
