I don't know how he picks the restaurants for his show but all of the ones I've seen have been well respected places. To be on his show probably bumps up the customers by a significant amount but I don't think the restaurants are paying him to be on. People who patronize these places get together and send texts, emails, etc. to recommend that "their" place is one that must be visited. The producers of the show go (I presume) by volume of input "votes." No money is exchanged to guarantee a visit. You like your eatery? Give DD&D a jingle. Some of the "votes" are obviously aimed at supporting a eatery with a inspirational story (immigration, single woman, mixed race family, generational place, as well as food appreciated locally) Most people here don't like any of the Food Network shows or hosts. The subject comes up regularly. Janet US |

We personally know the people that run these restaurants and we actually eat there. My daughter and her boyfriend worked at several of the places featured. One owner came over to my office and helped me clean up when my office got flooded. I love that guy! Most people won't ever get to eat at the restaurants featured in their state. They don't have any emotional connection to the show. I like to watch the segments that feature local eateries - the rest I don't care about because there's no emotional connection. Most people on this newsgroup don't like a lot of things. That's no surprise, the negativity is strong here. What the heck is that about? That's the attitude of people just waiting around to die. |

Maybe it's unique for you in the sense that you haven't experienced it before. |

Most people on this newsgroup don't like a lot of things. That's no surprise, the negativity is strong here. What the heck is that about? That's the attitude of people just waiting around to die. ======= I don't find that to be true of "most" of us, just some of us. Cheri |

I like dandelions. They're attractive in bloom, it's amusing to watch the rabbits eat the stems after they're done blooming, and they're better than narrow-leaf plantain, although not as desirable as Creeping Charlie. Much, much better than the three types of thistle that infest my yard. Cindy Hamilton |

When I am commenting in reply to something you have said, yes, is may be to or about you. I did not think that I would need to explain the comment about praising weeds in a lawn and garden forum. One would expect that they would be discussing plants and methods, garden care and wee control, not suggesting the the weeds are a good thing. |

Well, speaking for the minority (it seems), I like Guy. I don't watch his shows on a regular
basis but don't find him as annoying as you guys. I like the baking competitions...a spring one is coming up. The ones with adults feature mostly professional bakers, altho the winner of the last one was a "home cook." And they may be heavily edited but they aren't scripted. The kids' baking competitions feature some really sophisticated pre-teen bakers. The hosts are Duff Goldman and Valerie Bertinelli, and they are super at interacting with the kids. I also like the PBS shows, but our PBS market doesn't show very many; however, I can watch them online very easily, even the Master Classes. I think it is really too bad that Mary Berry's left hand is so affected by arthritis; I think Jacques Pepin also has some arthritis showing in his hands. It would be very hard for a TV personality to suffer those effects. N. |

This is the baking competition that I miss seeing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coupe_...la_Boulangerie Food Network carried it for a number of year. To me, the competitions were fascinating to watch. I cant remember how many days completed the competition. The U.S. won a number of years in a row for classic batard. Janet US |

Yes, US Janet, I remember those competitions well. PBS used to carry
some shows, too, that featured internationally-known chefs demonstrating their various skills. It is sad that the Food Network has dumbed down so much. But, like the network says, it is about "entertainment," not necessarily only cooking and baking. N. |
