Default What to take out of the freezer? 3/7/17

It's one of those days. I usually have some idea of what I'll want to
cook for dinner. Today, nope.

In the freezer: catfish fillets, sea scallops, bay scallops, pork
chops, a small chuck roast, a loin lamb chop. I simply can't decide
what I want. I need to take whatever it is out to thaw.

Given the above, any suggestions?

Take out whatever hits your mood. If no mood, take out the oldest thing
that has been frozen.

For me, hamburger with the works that I cooked two days ago and the rest
of my mushroom soup that I cooked then too. A handful of chips along
with that.

I'm taking one large chicken breast out of the freezer. I've decided
on chicken piccata. salad or broccoli and one large baked potato
halved for the two of us.

My wife used to make a barely pilaf with mushrooms and beef stock. It
was delicious.

I think I'll go with the lamb chop. I did finally manage to find
pearled barley. Bought two bags of it in case it disappears again.
They had it tucked down on the bottom shelf below all the other grains
people seem to be buying (e.g. quinoa). I've got plenty of frozen and
frozen from fresh green veggies in the freezer to go with it. Thanks!

That's the problem... nothing seems to be hitting my mood. I usually
have an idea when I get up what I might want for dinner.

I made a cheeseburger two days ago, with potato chips. Used up the last
of the ground chuck.

Sounds good! I don't have any chicken. I used up the last of the
chicken cutlets last year making - yes - chicken picatta.

the advice of what has been in the freeze the longest is good.

Nothing much has been in the freezer for a very long time. I restocked
after a four day power outage due to Hurricane Matthew last October. I
managed to save some food but I wound up throwing away a lot of things,
especially chicken and seafood items. The freezer stayed very cold
because I had a 10 lb. bag of ice in it. I still threw away a lot of
food which might have been questionable after a thaw. It's not really a
matter of the date, more a matter of I have no idea what I really feel
like eating.

In that case, may I recommend McDonalds.
2 double cheeseburgers for $2.50
2 dollar fries
All you can drink soda if you eat in the place.

You must be a rich guy. I like to buy 1 McDouble and 1 small fry for $3.00 and then a large drink for a dollar. In this way shall my finances be preserved. I'll probably eat there today too. I have to see a client at 12:30 then get my wife to the doctor at 2:00. Who the heck has a bunch of time to eat?

Ask at your McDonalds. They don't advertise but at mine, one double
cheeseburger costs much. If you buy two they are 2 for 2.50. (1.25 each
if you buy two). This doesn't show on their list though. you need to
know that and ask for it.

So anyway, I take home. 2 double cheese burgers (2.50) and two dollar
fries (2.oo) plus tax.
About $5.00 for all that and I only eat one burger with the two fries.
The second burger becomes a late night snack. I like that deal and I do
love the food.

Tonight is mushroom soup...I even added some corn to this last bit.
And reheated home-cheeseburger with the works.
This will keep me happy for several hours. :-D

I like your way of thinking. If I didn't have a wife and kids, I would eat very cheaply. As it goes, we spend a lot of dough on food. My sister-in-law noted that there were a lot of restaurants on this island. My daughter said "the people here eat out a lot." It's some kind of cultural thing, evidently. I don't see the need for it, myself.

You tip sounds like a very good one. Hopefully, I will remember it when I need to. Typically, I can only eat half a burger but if I haven't had anything to eat in the day, I can wolf down a whole burger for sure. Today could be the day.

You do that, and have fun.

I settled on a broiled lamb chop, pearled barley pilaf and (leftover
frozen from fresh) broccoli florets.

It was delicious!

Gary knows I wouldn't waste gas to drive to McDonald's. I don't care
how much of a "deal" they offer. I made a cheeseburger several days
ago, using the last of the home ground chuck. It was a nice thick
burger cooked to medium rare.

McDonald's doesn't give you the option of ordering a burger medium rare
because they use thin frozen beef patties.

https://www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/a...questions.html

"Our burgers are made of 100% ground beef, formed into hamburger patties
and then quickly frozen at our suppliers..."

I make and freeze my own, but they are at least an inch thick. (I use
one of those old Tupperware hamburger press & store things.) I do not
like burgers cooked well done. Nor do I want a bunch of condiments or
special sauce on them. Meat, cheese and a toasted bun. That's it.

I also had a nice homemade cheeseburger last night along with the last
of my mushroom soup (corn added this time)

Very delicious burger....more like an expensive diner burger.
As I've said though, McDonald's burgers are totally different.
Don't compare them to homemade. They are like a completely
different food. I happen to like both.

I do have the urge lately. I'll probably give them some business
in the coming days.

I also like them that way sometimes. Just like when I buy all-beef
hotdogs, I prefer them plain on a piece of soft white bread.
If I buy cheap hotdogs, I'll add the works.

Homemade hamburgers, I'll eat plain sometimes but also like them
with the works...mayo, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, onions, tomato,
swiss cheese, maybe a few pickle slices. Mushrooms too if handy.

All different burgers and I like them all.

It's March now.
Is this the same one you asked here about how to prepare? Or is this
a newer one?

I know what month and day it is, thank you. What's the big deal having
a 1.75 lb. pork tenderloin in the freezer for three months? Or even six
months? And no, I didn't ask how to prepare it. I posted I was going
to make pork tenderloin with sage-crumb coating. cshenk got all
confused about the cut then pretty much insisted I should marinate in
soy sauce.

I brushed it with Dijon type grainy mustard and rolled it in bread
crumbs seasoned with crushed fresh garlic, sage and S&P. I roasted it
for 25 minutes. No confusion there; it's a recipie method I got from
'Cooking Light' Magazine in the 1980's.

I don't throw away perfectly good food. I just wasn't in the mood for
pork tenderloin so when I was looking in the freezer my brain apparently
skipped right over it. No biggie.

I've got the grill fired up and I've done two NY strips, 5
Italian sausages, and 5 hamburgers. These will be lunch and
dinner for the next few days.

When it comes time to reheat I will pop whatever the choice
for that day is on a plate and nuke in the microwave for 2 or
3 minutes at 40% power.
