Dr. put me om an anti-inflammatory diet yestetday to stop some pain I've
had. And some pills. But he forgot to give me will-power pills.

Pretty much a vegan diet as well as no refined grains (no bread. tortillas,
etc) or other Glutens. No sugar, salt, or artificial sweeteners. Very few
oils. More or less, nothing that tastes very good. Looks like no more
prepared foods - home cooking for this very bad cook.

I'm sure to love this new diet.

Oh man. Try to exercise each day aerobically. That does kill your
appetite somewhat.

My parent's doctor put them on a crap diet many years ago. What's left
of life if you can't even enjoy a good meal of choice? I'd choose an
earlier death.

Yes, well it depends on how bad the pain is too, what's left of life if it's
too painful to enjoy?

Left arm and hand, shoulders, legs, neck, back, ... Not that bad - if I
don't move. Trouble is, it's spreading and I'm afraid it will enter my
other arm and feet and put me pretty much out of business. Also inteferes
wuth sleep. I think I choose the diet but after a week or so on it may
change my mind.

IMO, life has ended when you live in constant pain. I've made plans for
that day.
I just hope I'll have the courage to do it when the time comes. I've
learned that
you think you know what you'll do in a certain situation, but you really
don't know
until that situation arrives.

Meanwhile, young doctors put old people on really sad, enjoy nothing,
diets. I have to wonder if they have actually tried to eat like this.
IMO, life also ends when you can't even enjoy your meals and they just
turn into sustenance diets. So you spend your last years sitting around
watching tv and constantly hungry for food that you are not allowed to
eat anymore. I don't think so.

IMO, when diets turn evil like this, your nicey life has ended. From
then on just eat anything and everything you want and drink all you want
to if that's your thing. Suffering with a crappy diet is no fun. At
least enjoy your maybe shorter life....but enjoy it, dammit. Go out
with a smile on your face rather than your last words being, "finally
it's over."

I can relate to not wanting to be restricted by diet, but the alternative
complications and pain are many times worse than not eating a lot of certain
foods for me. Give the diet a try with new recipes etc., it might not be
that bad, but if I recall correctly you aren't into scratch cooking so it
might be challenging to make meals that appeal to you. On the other hand you
might like being pain free better than eating many of the prohibited foods
and learn to cook the meals that appeal to you. Good luck.

How are you going to enjoy that shorter life if you are in constant pain or
too sick to eat "anything and everything? Me, I prefer to live a bit longer
without pain which for me is low carb lifestyle, there are still plenty of
good things to eat, but that doesn't mean you don't miss certain foods at
times, but that's what birthdays and major holidays like Thanksgiving are
for. ;-)

KenK.... are you saying all this might be controlled by diet?
What is your diagnosis? What you describe here is horrible.
If diet might fix all that, I would certainly give the boring diet
a chance to see if it helps.

Did you see a real doctor? The diet only remedy almost sounds like you
are talking to some other person that may or may not actually know about
modern medicine.

Don't ever trust these weirdo medical experts that aren't real doctors.

You've been told to ruin your diet (for pleasure). What exactly is your
medical diagnosis?

At least google it for yourself. Sounds bad.

Wow, that's a tough one. If allowed alcohol I'd probably drink through
the pain every day as eating surely is not going to be much fun.

Hope you feel better though.

Gawd you're a misery.

Don't be so defeatist. The OP is in pain but that doesn't mean
either the pain or the cause is permanent. He's been given advice on how
to reduce the inflammation that's causing pain. If it REALLY HURTS,
he'll do whatever it takes to help himself.

> Meanwhile, young doctors put old people on really sad, enjoy nothing,

I have. After a serious kidney illness in my teens I spent well over
a year on a very restrictive diet (lots of exclusions, very low protein,
NO salt AT ALL, limited fluid intake). I never felt hungry because I was
too tired to have any appetite.

> IMO, life also ends when you can't even enjoy your meals and they just

In plenty of medical conditions, the right diet and sticking to it, and
following doctors orders and taking the medication exactly as
instructed, can turn your health around.

> IMO, when diets turn evil like this, your nicey life has ended.

Mine didn't. I recovered, I can eat anything and really enjoy it.

I was wondering as that sort of diet is recommended by quacks, vegans
and other cranks as a panacea.

I don't know about the diet but I do know a bit about general arthritis
aches and pains. Exercise is good but you also need a really good
mattress.

I have some autoimmune inflammatory conditions myself, so I've heard this
same advice. It does work for many people to cut gluten, dairy, et al out,
especially those with rheumatoid arthritis. I've heard good things about
supplementing with turmeric capsules for inflammatory conditions as well.
I bought some to try myself, but just haven't gotten into a routine of
taking it yet. Might be worth checking into, too. It also helps to focus
on eating what you can eat (and like) rather than focusing on what you
cannot. I suspect if you give it a good try for a few weeks and start to
feel better, you won't care what you are giving up because it will be worth
it.

If he googles, he will find many legitimate recommendations to try an
anti-inflammatory diet for certain conditions, most especially for
rheumatoid arthritis.

It is gaining in popularity in traditional medicine circles now, too,

An unverified claim from me. I started taking vitamin B complex for
something else and crippling pains that I had at the base of my thumb
for years and years disappeared in a couple of months. (won't hurt to
try) It's been a couple of years now and the pain hasn't returned. I
couldn't grip things because of my hands. I used to lay on my hands
in bed just to even out the pain. Anyway, sorry to hear about your
issue and hope the diet approach works. Good luck.

Stick with it for a bit. My wife had Lyme disease and was on a similar diet. (plus more pills than could be counted)
As soon as she felt better she would cheat on the diet. It was almost an instant return to agony.
All is good now and she can eat pretty much everything again. Corn is still out. This was a 2 year battle so give it a chance and double down on good old water.

Yes, real MD. Arthritis specialist. I was referred to him by my MD for
rheumatic arthritis, because of blood test results, which he said I didn't
have.

Inflammation. Thia ia an anti-infammatory diet. He prescribed
Methylprednisolone which is an anti-infammatory medication. It has helped
me a great deal over the past three days. It runs out in a couple of days.
The diet is to keep the inflammation from returning.

Thanks but I've been taking B-100 for many years. Doctor told me to for
something else, don't remember what now, but it worked.

Yes, arthritis specialist MD. I was referred to him by my MD for possible
rheumatoid arthritis.

Nope. No alcohol ot tobacco. Fortunatey, I'd quit both several years ago
for unrelated health problems.

Methylprednisolone he prescribed has helped a great deal. Soon to run out.
Diet is to keep inflammation from returning.

I've heard that from several sources. But I'm reluctant to spend that
much money plus the problems in removing the old one, installing the new
one, putting back on bedding, etc. and it could well not help any.

None of my doctors mentioned doing this.

Good luck on your new journey. You don't have to cook. Just go to a health food store that prepares food. Well, that's what I'd do anyway. It is an expensive way to eat but perhaps not if you look at it as medical treatment. I can cook a lot of things but I don't have a clue about this kind of food so I'm no help with that. Sorry.

Which is why this particular medical specialty is called rheumatology
and any MD who specializes in it is called a rheumatologist. Amazing,
yes!

Interesting. Back when I was about age 50 I developed a very bad pain
at the base of one (or 2?) of my thumb. It lasted over a year...daily
constant pain. Bad but not crippling. An older customer of mine at the
time said, "yep that's arthritis and it will only get worse." That was
scary to me. Bad at age 50 or so. I hated to imagine how bad it would
get by age 70.

Luckily, for whatever reason, it disappeared after a year and a half or
so. WHEW!

Staying away from refined grains is simply good health. Gluten is
probably what's causing your pain and if you don't cheat, you'll know
in less than a month if that's the problem. If you want to eat
tortillas, switch to corn. They taste better anyway. Eliminating
gluten, sugar and salt at the same time isn't very scientific, but you
can add them back one at a time to see which one is the problem. In
the mean time, maybe you'll be motivated to improve your cooking
skills!

PS: If it's not gluten, other common allergens are cow dairy, eggs and
soy. Soy is everywhere, even in that package of flavored almonds.

Is it your joints or muscular? Have you noticed any weakness? I had
terrible shoulder pain, that a physical therapist was able to help me
with. It was tendonitis.

The last time we bought a mattress, the old one was removed by the
delivery men. I forget if it was free or maybe $20. They often throw
it in. Same with TVs. Have the new one delivered by a local business
and they'll take your old one away to recycle.
