Very cute, but if I was younger (since they live a long time) I would like
to have Sugar Gliders I think, as it is our Rat Terrier has a long life span
so might be the last pet we have. They do bring great joy to your life and
I'm sure you miss Mia, I miss her pics too.

Yes, me too. As you know we take rescues and this Border Collie is a bit
younger than the others have been. Perhaps she might be the last girl we
have too!

Wouldn't it be great if our pets lasted as long as we did and vice versa?
What a perfect world that would be for all involved.

Just get a parrot. They are likely to outlive most of their owners. I'm not sure what happens then. It would be interesting to find out.

If knowing means having to take care of a parrot, you're probably right about that. My guess is that you have to find somebody willing to take care of your birds after you're gone and that there's probably a organizations around that takes care of orphaned parrots.

If you ask me, it would be cheaper/easier to have a kid and have that as a pet.

Oh yes! It is heart breaking when a beloved pet dies. Their lives are so
short compared with ours

Still, they bring so much love while they are with us. I wouldn't want to
miss that

Mine didn't. He was allowed to flutter round the garden and spent
most of his time free. Trouble was when people came to my parents
house and drinks were around, he imbibed. No kidding. In the end the
vet said it put an early end to his life span, he enjoyed every moment
though.

A biiig talker and imitator. I remember a friend of my mothers
visiting with her kid about three years old. Instantly Pol started
crying, then the kid started too and there was really no way to
explain to him Pol was only imitating a baby crying He was an
Amazon Green. My mother had two Siamese cats but they went in fear of
him, he only had to nip each one once for them to fear the beak!

One doctor in our town specifically has it in his will that one of his
children will take his parrot if he dies before the parrot does, but lots of
pet owners have wills that specify that. Now, if the child didn't want the
parrot no telling how long the lifespan of the parrot would be.

The answer is to have more than one pet of different ages, I always
have several indoor cats, I have four now, spanning 4 to 16 years.
Having several eases the grief when one passes. I would never have
just one. Each time a cat passes I accquire one or two more, usually
two litter mates. I find it's no more effort to care for one cat as
six. It's also much easier on the cats to have several, they don't
suffer as much when one passes, yes they cry for their litter mates.
I think it's very cruel to have just one pet. Felines normaly
colanize, they are definately not loners. Canines live in packs, they
aren't happy living without companions either. Humans are not happy
living alone only they will rarely admit it.

Well yeah, you have the place for it, I don't, and I only want one pet at a
time in my house to care for, unless you consider fish to be pets. I like
cats, but I prefer dogs. My spoiled dog doesn't really care that much for
other dogs at all so she wouldn't be happy with several. I'm am happy you
have the barns etc. to make room for many ferals. That's a good thing.

Same with mine. She is terrified of all dogs which isn't surprising knowing
where she came from. Like yours, she is very spoiled She doesn't like
other people either. If someone comes to the house she sits and growls.

Of course, in this day and age we know better than to stick a bird in
a cage for its entire life.

Hopefully, that's one appealing parrot. My guess is that a lot of orphan parrots get let loose in the rainforest. That's going to be a problem in the future.

Pol died in 1957, so hardly in this day and age!

Pol was only in his cage, which was a generous size, if we were all
going to be out (my mother feared for her cats) or at night. I used
to trim his flight feathers, price of being allowed in the garden.

Yes, who knows what happened to them before we got them, Annie was a day or
so away from being put down when Animal Friends Connection rescued her, she
was a walking rack of bones, and had been picked up twice by the pound.
We've had her for almost six years and she still gets antsy around other
dogs. She's not great with strangers, but really does well with the
grandkids etc.

I know they do have parrot rescues that take them, but other than that I
have no idea.

I have always had rescue cats and dogs. The current cat has been with
me since a year last December - early this year she changed quite a
bit and I feel it is like she is saying 'I know this is my place and I
intend to rule, right now!'

Um, I'm not speaking of the ferals here, I've no control over how many
ferals congregate here, that number is constantly in flux... there are
three regulars but often more come and go... those never come into the
house. I'm speaking of house cats, my house cats never go out. I
can't imagine someone living in a house so tiny it can't accommodate
2-3 cats. Cats are very quiet and sleep about 75% of each 24 hours,
house cats don't require a lot of space.
I've had dogs but find them to be too much work, I no longer feel like
having to walk a dog 2-3 times a day and in all sorts of weather. I
can't just let them run out on their own, chances are a dog wouldn't
return, a preditor would get them. I've never seen dogs running loose
here, dogs have no survival skills. The feral cats have excellent
survival skills, taught by their feral mothers. House cats have no
survival skills either, that's why mine are never let out.

I've had parakeets, they were permited out of their cage for an hour
or so when I was around to watch them but as they got older they
prefered to stay in their cage. I've had all sorts of pets, even an
outdoor box turtle living in our small city sized yard that
disappeared during winter and reappeared in spring. I've had
terariums with frogs and salamanders. I've had lots of tropical fish.
I even had an ant farm for a while until my mother said the ants go or
she goes, she said she couldn't sleep because she felt like ants were
crawling on her. I've always had pets. Some people shouldn't have
pets, they wouldn't even care for a chia pet.
