I'll use it for most things where onions are used as a seasoning. It gives a
pretty intense onion flavor. I wouldn't use it for things like fried rice or
when onion is needed for texture. It's one of the great timesavers in my
kitchen. It's something I don't ever want to run out of.

Dunno what my original response said. It didn't even make sense to me

I don't buy them. I dehydrate my own (other veggies too) usually when I
get a lot on a good deal

I'm with you on that one, Gary. I love good meatloaf but can't stand it
cold.

Oh no, that would be 2 inches tall. Thickness of the wall at he base
would probably be ~1 inch and tapering up somewhat towards the top.
Unlike a British pork pie where the walls are straight sided and,
from the couple of experiences I've had, probably about 4 inches
tall.

From what i have seen of MrD's pie, it looks like two layers of pizza
sandwiched, with a filling on the bottom and and cheese on the top

It looks lovely))

When I am able I have to make one D. loves the look of it but he loves my
pizza anyway so at least I will be half way there

Yeah. A meat loaf sandwich is good enough but I'd rather take it
to the top level and heat it up to eat plain or with sides again.
I've never been able to freeze meat loaf either. It's so damn good,
I'll just repeat meals until it's all gone.

Same with lasagna.....never any leftovers. :0

The thing about a Chicago style pizza is that it has the sauce on the top crust. I think it would be better to put the sauce in the bottom but I don't make the rules, Chicago does.

I do watch Diners, Drive-in and Dives. The thing that I have most
importantly learned from that show is that each restaurant, chef and
cook have their own way of doing something. It can't be duplicated by
buying a bottle of something. Very often it is a 2-3 day process and
multiple cooking stages to arrive at a flavor or texture. It was most
disheartening when I really understood that. There went my hopes and
dreams of sometime being able to duplicate some favorites. Oh, sure.
I can come "close". But never quite hit the spot. Your up-side-down
pizza may fall into that category.

It's to keep the cheese from burning. The inches thick pizza needs a
long cook time and the cheese on top would burn.

You must make puny sized meat loaves, I never make meat loaf with less
than 5lbs of home ground, never nystery meat. Meat loaf sandwiches
(hot/cold) are wonderful with horseradish sauce.

Sounds like the result is similar to an open face calzone. Extra points
for the table side service. Could be fun at at pizza night with friends.

That makes sense. I had it in the toaster oven for 30 minutes at 325 degrees. That's a long time for a pizza.

That look good. Next time I'll make a deep dish pizza with no top crust.

The thing about a Chicago style pizza is that it has the sauce on the top
crust. I think it would be better to put the sauce in the bottom but I don't
make the rules, Chicago does.

===

Ahh but do you always stick to the rules??? Hmmm??

That makes sense. I had it in the toaster oven for 30 minutes at 325
degrees. That's a long time for a pizza.

===

But that is a whole lot of pizza

That look good. Next time I'll make a deep dish pizza with no top crust.

It does look very enticing, but I've never been overly fond of
Chicago style pizza and prefer a thinner crust with 4-5 toppings, but
not thick layers of them. I think a lot of it depends on where you
learned to eat pizza growing up.

Wayne Boatwright

====

The first time I had ever even seen pizza was in Malta and my Italian friend
took me to a newly opened Pizzeria in Valetta! It was heaven on a plate!
)

I HAD to learn to make it They were thick crust and it is how I learned
to make them. I suppose D got used to those and now isn't interested in
thin crust

I wanted to make a Chicago style pizza that was sorta true to form but let's
face it, I have as much chance of making a real one as someone from the
mainland making real huli huli chicken.

===

Good point! I doubt very much that when I do get around to making one it
will be either the same as theirs or yours

It doesn't matter much so long as we end up getting something we really
enjoy!! That is the (for me) the whole point lol

Incidentally I did copy the recipe for huli huli chicken so I will be trying
it out when I am able I don't know if it was yours though.

You're far too kind - thanks!

He doesn't know you, so I don't suppose he was being kind )

Most Chicagoans I know disdain Chicago - style pizza...it's really more of a
"tourist thing"...

My local bakery makes an excellent pan thick(er) - crust pizza, one piece is
enough to sate your Pizza Jones...it's not "Chicago - style", however.

Best
Greg

===

I think I have said elsewhere, I make only thicker(er) crust pizza so I
suspect, whatever I make might be similar The 'filling' will almost
certainly be very different

I don't have a recipe for that chicken. Mostly you can use a salt water solution to brine the chicken. The important part is using kiawe wood to grill the chicken. On the mainland, it would be similar to mesquite wood. I can't say what it's called in the UK. It's a pretty hot fire so you have to turn the chicken frequently. Huli huli means turn turn. Hee hee. You can baste it with with a light shoyu, water, sugar, salt, solution. Typically it's applied with a spray bottle which means you cannot use garlic or ginger or anything that can't be sprayed.

The days of huli huli chicken are ending over here. It seems to be catching on in the mainland though.

Puhleeze... Chicago pizza is really a deep dish caserole made with
lots of Guido ingredients piled on thick, it's essentially an upside
down dago pot pie.

And from what I've read here Huli Huli Chicken ain't much different
from deli rotisserie chicken, in fact most deli rotisserie chicken is
much better. Just because yoose cook everything with pineapple
doesn't make it Hawaiian... pineapple was a reletively recent Central
American import, there's nothing Hawaiian about pineapple. Hawaii
really has no native food crop, weren't for coconut and seafood yoose
would've all starved long ago... and coconut is really seafood, no one
knows where coconut is native, it's been traveling the world via the
seas forever. There's no such thing as Hawaiian food other than those
disgusting taro roots, and that's not native to Hawaii either:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taro
The only food that Hawaii can lay claim to is their national meat.
Hormel Spam.

Beats the heck out of me why people have to pose as experts in things they know nothing about. I got a better chance of being a guru on the traditions and foods of Brooklyn than yoose on the subject of anything Hawaiian.

These islands sprang out of the middle of nowhere. Every plant and animal here had to be introduced. Obviously, pineapple and taro was not native to these islands because nothing is. Who cares? The immigrants to these islands brought their foods and traditions when they arrived and we embraced the peoples and their culture. Ain't nobody telling anybody to go back where they came from.

I don't have a recipe for that chicken. Mostly you can use a salt water
solution to brine the chicken. The important part is using kiawe wood to
grill the chicken. On the mainland, it would be similar to mesquite wood. I
can't say what it's called in the UK. It's a pretty hot fire so you have to
turn the chicken frequently. Huli huli means turn turn. Hee hee. You can
baste it with with a light shoyu, water, sugar, salt, solution. Typically
it's applied with a spray bottle which means you cannot use garlic or ginger
or anything that can't be sprayed.

The days of huli huli chicken are ending over here. It seems to be catching
on in the mainland though.

Beats the heck out of me why people have to pose as experts in things they
know nothing about. I got a better chance of being a guru on the traditions
and foods of Brooklyn than yoose on the subject of anything Hawaiian.

These islands sprang out of the middle of nowhere. Every plant and animal
here had to be introduced. Obviously, pineapple and taro was not native to
these islands because nothing is. Who cares? The immigrants to these islands
brought their foods and traditions when they arrived and we embraced the
peoples and their culture. Ain't nobody telling anybody to go back where
they came from.

All land sprang out of the middle of nowhere. The continents just did
it a lot earlier.

Don't burst his bubble. Hawaiii is very very speshial and dsi1 is even
very very speshialer. And did I already say how speshial Asians are?
They're so much more speshial than white people. Much more. Awesome.

LOL Ed!

The Hawaiian Islands sprung up as a result of volcanic activity on the
floor of the Pacific ocean. And of course, nothing natural ever grew
out of rich volcanic soil. Nope, no fruits, no plants. It was just a
bunch of rocks.
