Here's a post from 1/22/90. If you're not using Google Groups, this is the only post you'll see. Otherwise, you'll see the whole thread. Most of the posts appear to be from corporations, military, and educational institutions.. This tended to keep out the petty whiners. Boy have things changed!

Except, of course, every September when the freshmen got their accounts
at their University.

Remember when AOL got Usenet access? Every day was like the first day of
fall semester.

that was the one good thing about the advent of FB

Spring break and summer seem to bring out the sophomoric trolls. They
had time on their hand and manage to baffle themselves with their
misguided sense of intellectual superiority.

There is, or was, a group called rec.food.recipes. IF it still
exists, maybe you should look there.

I didn't mind that at all. I did get an awful, sinking, feeling when I realized that the days of the free internet was over and the web had fully bloomed into a major channel to sell merchandise and services.

It still exists as does rec.food.recipes.beer. It must be next to
impossible to kill a newsgroup in one of the Big 8 hierarchies
nowadays. Whether there's any meaningful traffic in it is another
matter.

The moderator dropped off the face of the earth without leaving
anyone who could post. I don't know if anyone was able to revive
it as I don't subscribe.

I am not around much any more tho I do post here from time to time. I Feel like some of these people are not exactly people I know , but over the years have learned a lot about them. I am for leaving the group the same, there is a certain fun in the chaotic posts that pop up.

Rosie.. have been here off and on since some time in the 90s!!
