Default "white trash" sous vide

When I wanted to get into sous vide I could not see spending a big chunk of money on a circulator and I certainly was not going to buy an actual sous vide machine...big bucks.

I saw in a post somewhere that you can make what I call a "white trash" sous vide out of a older crock pot (one that has off, low, high switches and a removable crock, or equivalent) and a thermocouple.

So I started researching and Googling. Found a lot of good information and videos and went to Amazon and bought an Inkbird. Cost me about $45. And I see they are even cheaper now.
https://smile.amazon.com/Inkbird-Itc...nkbird+itc-308

Easy set up once you understand the way the thermocouple works and it works very well. My older crock pot is a larger one with a deep removable crock so I can do more than one piece at a time, like the two pieces of brisket I just did recently, and I can put the lid on it to keep evaporation from happening. People who use the Anova or others use coolers and cut holes in the lids or use regular containers and put ping pong balls on them to slow evaporation.

I think a crockpot with a lid is a genius hack.

The reason I did my white trash setup was that if I discovered I wasn't really into sous vide then I'm not out a bunch of money on a setup, and If I discovered I LOVED it I can always upgrade later on when I feel rich !!!

Well, I love sous vide, but right now my little hack works perfectly so I don't see any reason to spend any more.

So if you are interested in trying sous vide and not spending a fortune, try the white trash hack.

Looks like a newer TC controller. They are coming down in price. The
last time looked, you couldn't find a good one fer under $70USD.

You can find a slow cooker, fer cheap, at a thrift store.

lots of thing only take an hour or so.....there's so many different recipes and stuff out there now....lots to try and lots to learn.

But time is relative and sous vide is a set it and forget kind of thing, so you really aren't spending any extra time, really.

You outta try and learn how to "wrap" yer text.

I got more to learn than I know what to do with. I have NO extra room
fer my:

French-made mondoline
Italian-made pasta roller
under warranty food processor
two (2) immersion blenders
three (3) deep fryers
two (2) bread making machines
wish-I-hadda toaster oven
air popcorn machine
1 qt sprout jar
ancient, but cheap, blender
wok, steel skillet, etc

yada, yada....

Small kitchen. Jes right fer 1 person, but very little counter space.

Why would it be called "white trash?"

I'm from the South. It's a phrase in that Southern dialect and genre that usually means put together with bailing wire and chewing gum, made from pieces of parts of old cars and tires, and denotes poor and/or hillbillies making do and living in rusty single wide trailers.

It's very derogatory if used to describe actual people, it's actually an insult....but.....its indicative of putting something together out of disparate pieces when used the way I use it.

Yes, you do. You use rec.food.cooking, which IS a newsgroup. What
you actually meant is, "I don't use Usenet and a GNKSA authorized
client", which is what rfc is part of, much like GG.

> So it is what it is.

It is precisely what you allow it to be. No more, no less.

Gobble Groups is a an archive of what Usenet carries. It is NOT
Usenet! They --in their usual style-- have tried to standardize
Usenet in their own image. Like many other archives/clients/etc, they
have tried to institute a de facto std. Poorly, I might add, hence
the following links:

http://twovoyagers.com/improve-usenet.org/
https://js.home.xs4all.nl/gnksa/

I usually kill-file (KF) most GG posts. You are an exception, for
which I have configured my "score file" to allow your post to NOT be
KF'd. This due to yer extensive experience as a resto owner. This
can be changed.

Sure you do. Hit a carriage return every 80 characters or so. How
to know? When you're replying and you see that your line has gotten
about as long as the lines of the poster above you.

Dang! A logical suggestion! Mags could always use a different
newsreader. There are lots of free ones out there. Google Groups
pretty much sucks.

I've used a slow cooker, rice cooker, and my induction range, to sous vide. They work fine. Your method is too high tech for me.

Yep! That's what I helped Bryan build out of I think a turkey roaster and a thermocouple and a controller circuit. He used it a couple of times.

My only basis for comparison is rn on Unix. I'd like to be able to
killfile, but Usenet isn't sufficiently important to me to bother
getting a real newsreader. Luckily, I'm smarter than software.

But Usenet is sufficiently important to you to use it regularly. And
with your computer background you'd have a real news reader set up in
no time. It's a bit like a professional cyclist riding around with
helper wheels.

Nah. It's a bit like a professional cyclist saying, "It's not that
far. I'll walk."

Cool setup. I forget...do you brown the meat before or after (or
at all)?

You say you can cook in your bathroom. Send a pic of sous vide
cooking on your toilet so Sheldon might believe you. heheh

I could never do that here...only one bathroom and toilet. Oh
well.

Well, being "white trash", non-derogatory white trash of course, your
outhouse should work well, that way you don't have to stink up your rusted
trailer. ;-)

I LOVED TRN under Unix, the first Usenet Newsgroup reader software I ever used. Quick and dirty, it WORKED!! Written by COMPUTER SCIENISTS, NOT ADVERTISERS!!
