If you live in Florida, GET THE **** OUT, NOW!!

Latest prediction is for Irma to turn north and skirt up the east
coast of Florida, staying at Cat 3 or greater ALL the way up to
Georgia!!

Insurance pays in death. If you stay or go the insurance from ahem..a reputibal co may pay. Some not.

They surely hate paying out. Those guys are slimy thugs. Mostly, they won't return/take your calls. I've found out that threatening them with being liable if one's business goes under is a very effective strategy.

Not always. A few years ago I had a huge branch fall on my roof, and I
mean huge. It was more than 50 feet long and the thick end of it was
more than 2 feet in diameter. It punched a couple holes in the roof,
ripped of eavestroughs, down spouts, fascia and soffits and more. There
was $24,000 in damage. My agent and the insurance company were extremely
helpful. The sent a tree company out to cut up the branch, which was
bigger than many trees. The guys were there within an hour, and it was a
cold, windy day. The contractor came mid afternoon. They had a roofing
company there within an hour to tarp it and the repairs were done within
a week, including the repair to the hole punched through the stucco
wall. The guy managed to patch it so that you can barely tell where the
repair was.

You need a good adjuster. I know of a few cases where they did well.
In one instance a restaurant had a small fire. Insurance offered $15k.
Adjuster got them $110k. They know what buttons to push.

That's a heck of an adjustment. OTOH, you're pretty much stuck with the adjuster you get. I did get paid $12500 for a Hyundai Sonata. That was $2500 more than I paid for it. That guy was pretty good adjuster. My guess is that he's on the streets.

Should have specified. This was an independent adjuster hired by the
claimant and he got paid a portion of the settlement.

My claim was for damages done during a building-wide flood. It was a small amount. I sent a letter to the building's insurance co. saying I'd sue. Of course I wasn't going to sue for such a small amount. It was a complete bluff but it got their attention alright.

I like the idea of an independant adjuster.

Anyone who claims all insurance agents and adjusters are "slimy"
obviously had some really bad or cheap insurance.

I've never had to file a homeowners claim (knock wood). But someone hit
my car in a parking lot several years ago. Bashed in the rear quarter
panel and part of the drivers side door. I didn't have any problem
filing a claim and getting it repaired. I notified the Sheriff's
department and reported an unwitnessed accident. They sent me a form to
submit to my insurance company. It cut my deductible from $500 to $250.
My coverage also included a rental car while the car was in the shop
being repaired and repainted. Nary a problem with filing a claim and my
rates didn't go up, either.

If you deal with cheap insurance companies and don't bother to read the
policy, you probably *will* be jacked when/if it comes to filing a claim.

I've never had a problem with insurance companies. Trolls might find
bridge insurance difficult to acquire.

"The adjuster you get" works for the insurance company, representing
their interest. Naturally his employers want to keep the payout as low
as possible.

What most policy claimants don't realise, is that they can and should,
employ their own independent loss assessor to represent themselves.

For some reason, most insurance companies forget to tell their
claimants that.

I was well aware whose interest their adjuster was looking out for. OTOH, a lot depends on the potential of the claim. It makes a lot of sense to hire your own adjuster for large amounts.

In my case, the insurance companies for the building and doctor's office responsible for the leak and resulting flooding, paid for the water removal and rebuilding of the walls/flooring in my office. I did my own estimate of the damages of equipment and furniture and submitted it to the companies. Being an honest and honorable guy, I resisted inflating the amount of damages. My claim was less than $5,000. Mostly, the insurance companies dicked around trying to get each other to pay.

In the end, I leveraged my position by threatening to sue if I had to close my business. That's always a good strategy. They paid me more than what I had estimated the damages to be.

Thanks. We have been told to expect flooding for sure. I just pray no
storm surge happens. I didn't even know what a "storm surge" was until a
few days ago. Thanks, Wikipedia. Furniture has been moved and stacked,
and today the hurricane shutters are going on. We just had our sea wall
replaced not even 2 weeks ago, and thank God for that because the old one
was a ticking time bomb waiting for one good storm. It never would have
held up. Crazy as it sounds, I wish I was there to help DH, but I'd have
to bring DD too and that's just too risky. So, I sit here and fret.

I heard a woman on the radio this a.m. who is home in Canada with the
two kids but normally lives in the Turks & Caicos where her husband is
working. She said he has sent her some pics and the damage is stunning
She also said it is terrible being where she is while he remains
but it was only practical to take the kids to safety.

I've made several homeowner insurance claims for damage, often damage
done by tenants. I've always carried a landlord's policy and I always
placed a clause in my lease that the tenant is to obtain renter's
insurance (naturally none ever do). Any time there was damage a
simple letter from my attorney indicating he was representing me was
all that it took to remedy my claim. With landlords insurance my
insurance company's lawyer automatically represented me, I didn't have
to do anything, major insurance companys have a huge legal staff. A
landlord should always carry landlord insuranc, especially for
liability protection against tenants who claim they fell down the
stairs and hurt themself... 99 times out of 100 they fell down the
stairs elsewhere... the insurance company will have an investigator
check out where the accident occured. With the investigation it was
discovered that the tenant fell down drunk at a party two states away.

You avoided addressing my reasoning. The place thrives on hiding money
from the tax man, but they want our tax money to be used to help them.
Heaven forbid they look at taxing the money in their tax shelter.

The woman's husband is a banker. He works for the banks who hide money
from our government so the depositors won't have to pay taxes on it.
Then they expect our government to use the money you and I pay in taxes
to help them out. I am not completely opposed to loaning them money or
to contracting agencies to help them out, but I resent the irony of them
expecting our taxes to be used to save them having to impose taxes.

I wasn't thinking of helping her - I didn't get the impression she was
asking for help from us, she was telling us about the destruction.

I can agree in part, but I bet there are many low income people living
there that need help. The waitress, the lawn guy, the hotel staff, and
other support people that are not hiding money.
