Default Why large cans (14+ozs) of seafood are tapered

Yep.

I buy those 14+ozs cans of salmon. They are tapered cans. IOW, the bottom
of the can is 1/4" smaller than the top, which means it's almost
impossible to squeeze all the water out of the canned fish cuz the lid
will NOT go all the way down --at least not enough to get all the
liquid out-- so I jes used a large strainer.

Right from the get-go, the liquid in the can was almost 2 full ounces.
At $8+USD per can (allegedly, wild caught Alaskan salmon), that's some damn
pricey juice.

Apparently, small 6oz cans are too short to use this "taper" trick.
That's why that can of white Albacore tuna that sez "6ozs" can be
turned into what you are really buying, which is a mere 3ozs of tuna
meat, by merely squeezing the meat with the lid. No wonder they
changed to foil packs for tuna. I ate the one foil-pack I found, but
it was almost impossible to get all the meat out.

I was able to get another 1/2 ozs of liquid outta the salmon by jes letting it
drain, longer. Remember: buyer beware!

Anyone with a modicum of mechanical reasoning would immediatelyu know
that the tapered cans are so the product will slide out without
digging it out with a fork whereby crushing and mutilating the
delicate fish.

The liquid is easy to remove by holding the fish back with a fork. but
why, that liquid contains a lot of flavor and nutrients...
incorprorate it into the dish.... and there really isn't all that much
liquid in canned salmon... I tip the can into my mouth and enjoy that
juice as cook's treat... nb has obviously never performed oral sex on
a female, or he'd know that the juice is the best part. LOL

For the salmon, I just cut the lid almost all the way, and drain it by tipping it against the
sink drain. It leaves very little juice and I appreciate what is left because it is just
barely enough to keep the salmon from being dry-feeling.

I know every cat in your neighborhood cries every time you pour that
juice down the drain.

Correct that, at least in the past, canneries (talking Alaska
here) were in remote areas. At least back then like 120+ years
ago, they actually just imported rolls of sheet metal and hired a
crew to stamp out and make the cans right on site during salmon
season.

There are no outdoor cats in my neighborhood. Homeowners are responsible pet owners
here.

I can follow that, my fostered cat is strictly indoors.

I guess can quit calling her my fostered cat as she's been
here now a year and a half. Her promised stay was 5 months.

Our cat will run out of the house when we enter the house unless we're careful. Beats the hell out of me that she's doing out there. Our other cat probably knows exactly where she's been. He'll be sniffing her all over when she gets back in.

Hardly a neibhborhood without a couple of cats. I see a couple around
my house at times. I live right next to a wooded area and have never
had a rodent in the house so I'm not going to complain about a cat
walking by.

Good for you Nancy, a couple of days ago there was a flattened cat on Mills
Avenue. I was behind a man who stopped to put it to the side, it had a
rhinestone type collar on so I assume it was some irresponsible pet owners
pet. I don't understand why people have pets if not wanting to care for
them, especially in town.

It is what cats do to wildlife that's the problem. The latest article from the NWF
(National Wildlife Federation) says studies have shown cats (feral but also domestic) have
contributed to a massive 26% of modern day bird, mammal and reptile extinctions, in
addition to contributing diseases like toxoplasmosis flushing into coastal waters in
those areas. So it isn't just that pet cats are much safer kept inside, so is the
wildlife.

I was at Family Dollar last week picking up basics (toilet paper, paper
towels). I was in line behind a woman with a stack of canned cat food.
I smiled and said, "Gotta feed the cat!" She said, "I'm trying to keep
it *in* my yard." Hmmm, I can't say I've ever heard anyone say that
before. I suspect she's feeding a stray/feral cat.
