Mom packed a PB sandwich and a bag of chips and that's all I needed. I can't remember a time when I actually looked foward to a school cafeteria lunch. When it comes to stocking for a storm I'm more interested in having charcoal for the grill and ice to keep things cold when/if the power goes out. Of course I have canned food but a DAK canned ham would not be one of those things. Jill |

Oh man...you prefered pbj sandwiches and chips to school lunches? I'm with Carol on this one. School lunches were almost always superior to any crappy bag lunches to me. I know most people talk bad about memories of school lunches but sorry, I always really liked them. Maybe I had better minimum wage cooks than most. > > When it comes to stocking for a storm ... <snip> I always have enough food for an extended storm (maybe even the current Puerto Rico situation if it was here). During prime hurricane season (which is not quite over with yet) I don't buy more food but I do concentrate on eating freezer foods and replacing them with large ice blocks in case of a long power outage. If a storm is heading my way, I'll also fill up many large containers with water before the storm. Also keep a bunch of cash in small bills to use at stores that might open for a few hours using generator power. Boy Scout motto - be prepared. |

Prolonged and widespread power outages are rare as hen's teeth here. The worst in my recollection was the Great Northeast Blackout of 2003, which lasted a couple of days for us. A few miles west, the power didn't even blink. We ran our portable generator a few hours a day for the refrigerators and all night long for the CPAP. Now we've got an automatic standby generator that runs on natural gas. We don't stockpile food, but we do have a couple of six-gallon gas cans (only one is full at the moment) and a big wad of cash in the gun safe. Anything worse than 2003, and we'd get outta Dodge. I went to a *lot* of different schools, Gary. Dad was transferred every couple of years. I was also a picky eater. So yes, I took a PB sandwich and a bag of chips with a thermos filled with cold milk. Sometimes she'd throw in a Hostess cupcake. LOL I remember when I was seven and we lived in southern California, I begged her to let me get tacos for lunch in the school cafeteria. She warned me I wouldn't like them. She was right. The lunch ladies wouldn't vary from their routine. I tried to get them to leave off the shredded iceberg lettuce (might have been diced raw tomatoes, too). They refused. Even back then I despised raw vegetables but lettuce in particular. So, I got stubborn and wouldn't eat the tacos. The teacher wouldn't let me leave the cafeteria unless I ate them. She wound up calling my mother. Mom told her she knew something like this would happen and BTW me skipping lunch that day wouldn't kill me. Of course eating them wouldn't have killed me, either. But maybe I was smart enough to realize since Mom was paying for it I should be able to get them sans shredded lettuce. Heck, even at Taco Bell they'd make a couple of plain tacos for me when we went there. Same thing at burger places (including McD's) - no problem getting just a plain burger on a bun. Would it have killed the cafeteria ladies to skip the shredded lettuce? Nope. > I'm with Carol on this one. School lunches were almost always > superior to any crappy bag lunches to me. I couldn't rightly say but it probably varies depending on the school cafeteria. I remember in junior/high school seeing what appeared to be crappy cardboard looking slices of pizza and prefab hamburgers wrapped in plastic in that cafeteria line. Didn't look very appealing to me.
