Remember my talking about getting a steel skillet? ....and my
neigbors bought me a French de Buyer steel skillet fer Xmas!

Well, it's finally "cured" or whatever the heck anyone calls it. I
jes cooked a single egg and it slid around that skillet like the
finish was non-stick. I hadda insinuate a silicon spatula between the
egg and skillet, initially, but once free, the egg slid around and I
was even able to pan flip it.

Oh, FYI, all those shortcuts --including the one provided by de
Buyer!-- are all nonsense. That includes the one where I spent $10usd
for a 10oz bottle of organic rapeseed oil (whatever the Hell that is).
Anywho, it's taken at least 9 mos, to get this pan "right". I never
washed it with soap, rarely water, and usually jes wiped it out with a
paper towel. IOW, I never cleaned it!! But hey, it works.

I spent most of the time (all but the last 2 mos) cooking hash browns.
Peanut oil and nuked/grated Russet spuds. That's where most of the
patina comes from. Anywho, it's done, so welcome --finally!-- to my
kitchen!

Nothing like a well seasoned pan, you'll enjoy it forever.

And it's no more organic than any common Salad Oil.

I don't get the fascination with everything being labelled organic.
Most people (in the US) like recognize most of the time it doesn't
really mean anything. nb, I thought most everyone in this ng knew
rapeseed = canola oil. What I did *not* know was Canola was short for
Canada oil.

I suspect I knew that, also. Perhaps it was organic "grapeseed" oil.
Whatever, I gave the remainder away, as I didn't want to cook with it
and the "sure fire" seasoning (thnx, Sitara) of my steel skillet did
NOT occur, despite my followng directions precisely.

Who gives a sh^^, it is OIL. The GM does not matter...it can't hurt you any
more than any other canola oil.

There are reasons to eschew GM foods other than their direct effect
on the person who consumes them.

It was moderately difficult to find a reference that wasn't at some
junk science site, but I was able to find this:

<https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-truth-about-genetically-modified-food/>

This is neither scientific nor unbiased, but I found it interesting
reading:

<http://www.politico.com/agenda/story/2017/09/13/soil-health-agriculture-trend-usda-000513>

It's a little tangential to this discussion, however.

Rub new skillet with pricey organic "grapeseed" oil and let heat up
until skillet begins smoking. Then wipe out old oil, add new oil,
repeat 8X times. Didn't work! Plus, all that $$$$ I spent on bogus
oil.

It occurs to me, this steel skillet is much like my 14" carbon steel
wok. You know, Breath of a Wok and all that nonsense. Difference is,
I use the skillet much more often. Basically, using the skillet is
what seasoned it. I bet if I use my wok, almost daily, fer 8/9 mos,
it would become perfectly seasoned, also.

ok. don't know why you referenced me with that methodology, I didn't recommend it, and wouldn't. I agree with you that the best way to season that skillet is to use the heck out of it.

I got conned on that too with a steel pancake griddle.

I believe it was flax seed oil...

I effortlessly got my cast iron frying pan beautifully seasoned by
repeatedly using it to roast pork.
