A ground sirloin burger (sans bun) seasoned with S&P, garlic powder,
cooked in a small cast iron skillet in butter with a few splashes of
Worcestershire sauce. Topped with a slice of pepper-jack cheese. I cut
the burger to show it's done medium-rare. That blob of yellow stuff to
the side is stone ground grits with butter and shredded cheese.

Sometimes I don't know what I want to cook/eat so I just throw something
together. Tonight was one of those nights.

Please pass the ketchup. Grits look good with the cheese.

Sorry, I don't have any ketchup. The grits that are still in the pan
(only butter added there) will be chilled and pan fried with an egg for
breakfast tomorrow.

We had a guest who brought dinner for us. She wanted to come up and
visit the leash free dog park with us and she brought a mobile feast.
All we had to do was cook it up and serve. I had made hummus and we had
3/4 of a pie that we made yesterday. She brought a mess of lamb chops
that she had marinated, plus... a salad, asparagus, liver pate, three
different cheeses.

I do that sometimes too, tonight I had left over ribs from yesterday and
cole slaw. I will admit that I ate a bag of Bugles while watching the
Yankee game which I considered lunch. I don't eat chips and things often,
but today I wanted something salty.

Oh yeah, I know, but it wasn't a big bag, it was one of those bags from the
Dollar Store. It was between that and Crunchy Cheese Curls and I do it so
seldomly that it won't hurt a bit.

That must have been a hard choice:

degerminated yellow corn meal, vegetable oil (may contain one or more
of the following: corn, canola, cottonseed, soybean), whey,
maltodextrin, reduced lactose whey, cheddar and blue cheese (cultured
milk, salt, enzymes), canola oil, salt, disodium phosphate, artificial
colors (yellow 5 and yellow 6), citric acid, lactic acid and less than
2% silicon dioxide added as an anti-caking agent.

I love that touch of disodium phosphate. Very subtle.

We had an after-work party to celebrate 60 years in business (not
bad for a tech company).

I had a helping of room-temp roasted vegetables (carrot, red bell pepper,
zucchini), a chicken skewer coated in (IIRC) pecans, and a "firecracker
shrimp" on a very small brown rice cake. I can't see why it was called
"firecracker"; it didn't taste of much besides shrimp. Then I followed
it with a salted-caramel chocolate cupcake. That bolus of sugar
and fat finished me.

Oh, and three large glasses of water as I circulated around, talking
to co-workers and their spouses.

I didn't know what I wanted to eat today so I already whipped up
something fast, a pot of kasha varnishkas... now what to go with...
going into town soon to buy those top round steaks that are on sale
and I'll see what else looks interesting... I think they have pork
chops on sale too. And I need to get onions and salad stuff.

New one on me!

https://www.thespruce.com/kasha-varn...recipe-1808352

This was traditional comfort food for Russian Jews, brought to America
by immigrants. It continues to be a favorite on the Lower East Side of
New York City, as well as across the United States.

In addition to being a touchstone with grandmother's cooking, this is a
great source of fiber, perfect for a side dish or vegetarian main course.

I've only ever heard of this kasha varnishkas here. I wouldn't have a
clue what to serve with it.

I'm glad to hear (in another thread) your wife is doing well and will be
coming home soon. Use up those onions before she gets there!

Exactly the same taste too IMO, except for, as you say, the shape and the
amount of salt.

Maybe 3 large glasses of beer would have been nice.

Interesting comment. Haven't had cold cereal in years but Rice
Chex was a favorite of mine. I loved a bowl with very cold milk
and a sprinkle of sugar. I never did try salting them though.

Sorry but I absolutely love and am addicted to Pringles, Sour
Cream flavor. That and salty Lays Classic chips.

It gave me an opportunity to talk to people that I don't usually
talk to during the day. The company has recently had a growth
spurt, and I made a point of talking to the "youngsters".
