Default 3 cups of peas

Â* Red Ripper field peas from my garden to be precise , plus a nice big
meaty ham bone , a handful of dried onions , dash of garlic , a little
salt and 5 cups of water . Soaked since last night , on the stove at 3
and sat down to eat at 6:30 . Pulled the last 2 chunks of cornbread from
the freezer and warmed that to go with the peas . The wife said they
were good . Works for me .

Just reading that makes me want to go out and make it.

Reminds me of 'Garbure' from South-West France to some extent.

We went out and set up DH's deer blind today. On the way home we stopped
at the grocery store and bought a chicken. I roasted it with onions,
olive oil, lemon juice and oregano. Rice on the side; tossed salad for
starters.

No worries. I wasn't critizing, just remembering my distant past.
I have no problem with deer hunting. It actually needs to be
done. Just not by me. I've been deer hunting only twice in my
life (both seasons about 50 years ago).

- first time with my grandfather who was a life long hunter. He
was a poor coal miner with a large family and he hunted for
survival...just to feed the family. He took me out deer hunting
one year but we didn't get one. It was fun though just being out
in the woods with grandpa.

- next year me and a friend went. We found a good place a few
days before the season started. Even sprayed some of the trees
with "apple scent" to entice them. Baiting like that was legal in
that state then, don't know about now.

So anyway, we got out there and set up at least an hour before
sunrise. It was a calm cloudy day and extremely cold. Pretty much
a perfect day for deer hunting. We each got in our spots then
just sat there waiting. And sat there, and sat there. Even
dressed well for the cold, it slowly got to us.

Finally about 9am or shortly after, with no activity, we gave
up. We were both freezing like crazy. So we built a nice fire in
a clearing just to hang out for awhile before we left. Guns
leaning on trees well behind us, we were standing by the fire
warming up and talking/joking loudly.

At one point, I just happened to look around and there was a doe
staring at us only about 40 feet away. WTH? I said, "Hey Bill,
look over there," as I walked backwards slowly to my gun. (It was
a 16-gauge shotgun loaded with deer slugs, which are a big
cylinder of lead stuck in a shotgun shell).

I slowly raised the gun and had a dead bead on her chest at
almost point-blank range. An easy kill shot. But she just stood
there staring at me looking all curious and friendly....dammit.
After about a minute of the man-deer standoff, I lowered the gun
and chased her off. I just couldn't do it. End of my deer hunting
career. heheh Even Bill said he was glad that I didn't shoot
her.

What a couple of pansy hunters we were. lol
