Default Tamales

Got to thinking about 'em. Bought some frozen pork tamales (Bueno
brand) and a can of Hormel Tamales. BTW, the recipe for a tamale
"casserOLE" is right on the can. (OLE, get it?)

The frozen tamales are a tad spicy, but they still have more masa than
meat. Spicy-ness is cheap.

I'm not desperate enough to open the can of Hormel tamales, yet.

On a related note.... my wife were on the way back from Toronto this
afternoon and looking for a place along the way to grab a bite to eat.
We were thinking a coffee and a muffin, but I spotted a Mexican place I
had heard about. I ended up ordering a full entree, a spicy chicken
burrito that came with a refried beans, Mexican rice and a salad. It
was delicious. There was an assortment of sauces, mild, medium and hot
(made with ghost peppers). Megatron added some sauce to the beans that
came with her steak burrito, but mine sure didn't need any extra heat.

There is no real Latino community around here, so it is not a region
where you should expect good Mexican food. It is still more Tex Mex than
Mexican, but I will definitely go back there.

Sounds good! I don't worry too much on 'authentic' on most things. I
know the differences (generally) but find the local versions work well
for me too.

Glad you tried the Bueno, sorry the masa content was too high.

We have plenty of local choices here so finding a meaty is easy, the
masa heavy ones just don't get freezer space.

Ok...hello dummy casa read the url - those'r made in Warshington state!

Our local fave is always Amigos:

http://amigos-foods.com/

But they're also nicely filled.

No reason those ought not be in a Colorado market.

There's some other brand that looks just like the NMT brand, but I can
not remember the name.

Also we get these at Costco, iirc:

Opened and nuked the canned tamles. Ick.

Six dime-roll sized tamales wrapped in something vaguely resembling a
corn husk. More masa than the frozen tamales. That extra masa encased a mass of
???? that woulda made a dog turd proud. Make seniors eating dog food think
they were getting over!

Not as spicy as the frozen tamales. Plus, the frozen one's had
something faintly resembling a pork muscle strands occassionally
passing through one's teeth.

I can't say the frozen tamales were actully pork, but they dang sure tried
to be!

They may be awful but that's why you should never eat them unless you're awfully hungry.

The problem, as I see it, is that people here aren't hungry enough which allows them to turn their noses up at food. People will eat anything if they're hungry enough. I'm not talking about human brains or anything like that. I'm talking about cold Vienna sausage from a can or Hormel tamales.

Food is a whole lot tastier when your options are fewer and most folks aren't truly grateful for the foods they are about to receive. That's the breaks.

Yes, I imagine (never have been truly hungry, the starving kind of hunger)
that anything would taste good then, anything.

Including your cats! Well, my cats anyway. When Uncle Un pushes the button down, the first thing I'm going to do is catch me some parking-lot free-range chicken. That is, of course, if we're still alive. I've been studying this video carefully.

I last ate some on a fishing trip around 1980 or so.
They are tasty when you are very hungry.
I do still buy the occasional can of "potted meat."
That's ok on a sandwich but I use it like a condiment
not for the meat. Well, I guess I do use it for the
meat but spread thin like a condiment.

A soft roll, both sides with mayo, a thin layer
of potted meat, slice of tomato and slice of
swiss cheese. Not too bad for a nice unhealthy
snack.

Not enough LRP's? You know, it never occurred to me to ask my father

Make yer own. If you have a food processor (FP), it's easy. I've
made deviled ham so many timees, I'm now sick of it.

He was an officer. Probably ate better than the troops in
the field/on patrol.

However, I've had several of the old K-Rations from WW2
and Korea. I liked them well enough.

We were still eating those old K rations when I was in the reserves in
the late 60s. At least I did not have to pay to try Vienna sausage and
find out our bad they are. The chocolate with a white coating on it was
a real treat. Somewhere in the house I still have one or two of those
little can openers that came in each box.

Thanks to the age of the ration packs we had very limited menu
choices. The odd time that we actually had a choice of two or three menu
packs we could trade with each other. Canned jamblaya usually ended up
in the garbage.

nb, if you process ham only until it is in smallish dice/bits, instead of a minced paste-
texture, add some minced scallions, diced celery, pickle relish, mayo, and a little chili powder, it
makes great ham salad. Much better in a sandwich than a deviled paste.

While I enjoy tuna, salmon, chicken, and egg salads, never tried ham
salad.

I jes deviled some ham leftovers cuz I could. Already had Grey Poupon
and Coleman's mustard and some horseradish, major ingredients fer
most deviled ham recipes. Plus, I barely recalled the flavor of devil
ham and liking it.

Do you think officers just sat back and gave orders? You think he was
at the O'club, having a few drinks waiting for a report? Maybe having a
steak? Oh dear.

My father was wounded. Two purple hearts, silver star, bronze star,
Legion of merit. And the 'V' on all the medals indicates 'in combat'.

My father was at the Tet Offensive. I'm not saying this is a good
thing. The entire conflict was a cock up. But I'm wondering why you
thought he got to eat better simply because he was an officer. He was a
part of a fighting force. Third Battalion, 1st Marines. Yes, my father
had to give orders. But he was right there with them.

my good memories of Deviled Ham is crackers, cheese, Deviled Ham, and
canteens of water in a backpack. We'd sit on the snow in the sun for
lunch when cross country skiing in the mountains. I can't do that
stuff anymore :-{

I do that. I have 3 or 4 special memories that I mentally saved
because I knew at the time it was special. I've got the sounds,
sights , tastes and smells of those times. :_)
