Default "Big Orange"

I know I've spoke of it, before. My 'big orange' Le Creuset Dutch
oven(?). You know, the one all the chefs show on their shows.

Well, I gotta tell ya', best $$$$ I ever spent. I paid half price
--couldn't afford it otherwise-- but, I woulda spent the full magilla,
iffen Ida hadda. Still, worth it!

I jes put whatever in that sucker, put it ina hot oven, and do
whatever. It always comes out right. No kidding. 'Big Orange
ferever!'

Could I save $$$$ with a counter-top slow cooker?

nb

You may save a few pennies, but would the result be as good? Hard to
beat a good cast iron DO for some foods. Besides, you have to heat the
house anyway so any lost heat from the oven is recovered in the house.

OK Ed, you don't hafta beat me over the head with the obvious.

Good point, BTW. It's doing exactly that, at this very moment. And
yes ....prolly can't keep house warm with a slow-cooker.

nb --nothing "black" about this Fri! ....woo-hoo!

I have a stainless steel dutch oven. It works fine, and weighs
a fraction of what a cast iron dutch oven does. Since my husband
wrecked his shoulders, weight has become a consideration for us.

We have a slow cooker, and it spends 99% of its time in the basement,
collecting dust. Generally, we don't like food that has cooked for
a long time, aside from the (very) occasional pot roast or stew.

I made stock from our turkey carcass yesterday in a stainless steel
stock pot on the stovetop.

I've mentioned before I have Descoware. It was the Belgian pre-cursor
to your big orange Le Crueset. I agree it's great for cooking on the
stove top and in the oven. My mother gave this stuff to me when I was
in my 30's because that's one thing she didn't want to move. I've got a
large covered skillet (missing the screw in wooden handle, it got
stripped over the years), a small skillet, a deep pot with a lid and a
smaller dutch oven with a lid. They're all flame orange. Circa the
1960's. Very heavy and they cook very well. I really only use the
smaller dutch oven. For making soups on the stove top.
