Default Back again!

Anyone miss me? I blew a computer Friday and am in resetup mode with
XanaNews. (Freeware, not as spiffy as some but easier and flexible
enough for me).

Need to fix my display name back to what you folks expect to see and
then fix some coloration that makes things easier to read. Then fix my
bozo-bin handling of course ;-)

It takes me 5 minutes to make a computer my computer - if that computer uses Chrome OS. Using Windows is a pretty joyless experience. It's so awful, that it's kinda funny.

Dang, it's actually leagues better than it was when they force-birthed
W10 upon us as conscripted beta testers.

Now THAT truly sucked!

Ever try Linux desktops of any flavor?

I really think my next computer will be a Chrome. I had not trouble at all
with it before giving it to my brother, very easy.

Yes I have. The Linux geeks had something special there but they blew it. They could have taken over the computer world. OTOH, Linux is the most popular OS in the world. It's kernel is at the heart of the Android/Chrome OSes.

I have to use Windows for work and I just hate turning on that power switch. You just never know if it's going to turn on or start another grueling update cycle.

I always avoided Win10. When my last computer died, I searched around the
second hand shops to get one with Win7 on it. It wasn't easy but I found
this one. It is old too and not too great. As you know it doesn't do
chevrons properly. <sigh>

Who knows what I will need to get next I guess I might have to follow you

Well I gotta tell you, the GUI enhancements and command line banishment
of the new desktops are darned impressive.

Ubunto, Mint, there's some good stuff out there now.

My PC gets updates overnight, reboots, and it's good to go the next morning
when I come in. OTOH, I never power it down because it's where we do our
nightly software build.

But the command line is still there for people who appreciate the
power and beauty of the shell.

I had a couple of those on my laptop last week. I was trying to shut
down one night and it decided it was going to update and shut off.... do
not turn computer off. I was upstairs watching TV and the wifi signal
is a little weaker there so I brought it downstairs and sat it on the
table by my desk top. After it had run for about an hour it had achieved
all of 3% of the update. The next time I booted up it had to complete
the update. A few days later I had to take my car to the dealership for
some work and brought my laptop along to keep my occupied. I had not
even had a chance to log on to their wifi when it started another
update. That one took about 15 minutes. I would hate to be using one
for something important at work and to have it start an update.

Absolutely yes, it is.

You just have the luxury of a desktop GUI that sublimates it.

Best of both worlds, no?

You can buy just about any pc and put just about any version of
Windows on it.

The idea that Windows 7 can't do "chevrons" properly is mind boggling!

I don't know why W10 is unpopular here. I have had no problems except
for a time when Edge wouldn't load and now I use that instead of Chrome
for certain things. OTOH, anything I have or have had running Android
has been a real PITA.

For phone it's been OK, getting better too.

For tablet, not so much.

PC - no clue.

That might be the solution for people with old computers that want to move away from Windows. I might try Linux yet again if a spare clunker of a desktop machine comes my way. OTOH, if I wanted a desktop system, I'd probably just dump the old hardware and get a Chromebox.

People like to come across special or unique. One way to achieve that
is to express hatred for the operating system most people use on their
PCs. Windows 10 works fine for me.

Remember you can run various OS's on partitions using:

https://www.virtualbox.org/

VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product
for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely
feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is
also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open
Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL)
version 2. See "About VirtualBox" for an introduction.

Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Solaris
hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including
but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista,
Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4, 2.6, 3.x
and 4.x), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, and OpenBSD.

Once I got everything sorted my way on W10, I'm happy enough with it.
I don't, won't, use Edge, much prefer FF.

The problem for me with Windows is the high price of the hardware, the high power consumption of the processors, the long wait time to boot up, the need for anti-virus programs, the vulnerability to malware, the software bloat and heavy system resource requirements of the OS, and the long wait time just to shut down. Other than that, everything's just wonderful.

I have used Linux on a dual boot system about 10 years ago. I didn't like it much.

I have to say the tiles and apps from their store are quite enjoyable, ftmp.

It was a thin selection at first, but not now.

Their weather app is as good or better as any 3rd party program I've
ever used, and that includes the mid 90s iterations of weather underground.

How about:

https://www.pendrivelinux.com/

https://www.pendrivelinux.com/put-ub...using-windows/

They work rather well.

I use FF most of the time but it is set so that it won't open FB Social
(or something like that). If I want to read the e-mailed comments to
Post Media articles, I use Edge, which now it is working, is very good.
I use Explorer for banking as it shows that the VPN is working.

Not my experience at all. Also, a number of techies told me that Windows
Defender with a router is sufficient and that I don't need 3rd party AV
software.

Some good free ones if you decide you do - AVG, AVira, etc.

And some commercial brands such as ESET will do a scan to root out
vulnerabilities.
Despite being super careful, my D-I-L got hit with ransom ware.
Obviously acquired from whom she once trusted. However, my son had
backed everything up, as he does regularly so either bought a new PC or
hard drive.

Me too! I don't need any of that stuff either - and more!

Okay, I won't do FB so that doesn't bother me

I got a new laptop back in March and I was already using W-10 so setting
this one up was a snap. Using a flash to transfer everything was a 2
minute snap. But when I first used W-10 well over a year ago it about
drove me nuts. Updates aren't bad, most time I've encountered are about
30-45 minutes.

This ASUS is fast but it does have some annoying quirks that aren't
apparent until you use it. Quirks that can't be changed.
