Tacos (crunchy corn tortillas). I used ground pork rather than beef for
the filling. I used Sargento finely shredded four cheese "Mexican
blend" cheese. Note: if you put the cheese in the bottom of the warmed
crisp tortillas before adding the other ingredients it is less likely to
break and make a mess.

I don't have tacos very often but I was in the mood for something quick
and easy. Hit the spot nicely!

I've never seen or heard of Canadian wine. I once tasted Dutch wine.
It tasted like a liquefied mouse nest. But it's supposed to be getting
better due to global warming.

Sounds good. FWIW... I once found an interesting recipe for scallops
and have used it a few times. It is ridiculously simple and delicious.
Mix equal parts of cream and prepared mustard. Dip the scallops into
the mixture and then roll them in bread crumbs. Stick them on skewers
and broil them until they are golden brown.

That sounds a lot more interesting than the hamburgers we had, as good
as they were.

Northern Europe was once a thriving wine growing region...in fact England during Roman times produced lotsa wine...then the "Little Ice Age" occurred, and wine production plunged:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age

'Viticulture disappeared from some northern regions and storms caused serious flooding and loss of life. Some of them resulted in permanent loss of large areas of land from the Danish, German, and Dutch coasts.
Northern Hemisphere

....

Europe

The Frozen Thames, 1677
The Little Ice Age brought colder winters to parts of Europe and North America. Farms and villages in the Swiss Alps were destroyed by encroaching glaciers during the mid-17th century.[21] Canals and rivers in Great Britain and the Netherlands were frequently frozen deeply enough to support ice skating and winter festivals.[21] The first River Thames frost fair was in 1607 and the last in 1814; changes to the bridges and the addition of the Thames Embankment affected the river flow and depth, greatly diminishing the possibility of further freezes. Freezing of the Golden Horn and the southern section of the Bosphorus took place in 1622. In 1658, a Swedish army marched across the Great Belt to Denmark to attack Copenhagen. The winter of 1794€“1795 was particularly harsh: the French invasion army under Pichegru was able to march on the frozen rivers of the Netherlands, and the Dutch fleet was fixed in the ice in Den Helder harbour.

Sea ice surrounding Iceland extended for miles in every direction, closing harbors to shipping. The population of Iceland fell by half, but that may have been caused by skeletal fluorosis after the eruption of Laki in 1783.[22] Iceland also suffered failures of cereal crops and people moved away from a grain-based diet. The Norse colonies in Greenland starved and vanished by the early 15th century, as crops failed and livestock could not be maintained through increasingly harsh winters, but Jared Diamond has suggested they had exceeded the agricultural carrying capacity before then. Greenland was largely cut off by ice from 1410 to the 1720s.

....

In his 1995 book the early climatologist Hubert Lamb said that in many years, "snowfall was much heavier than recorded before or since, and the snow lay on the ground for many months longer than it does today."[25] In Lisbon, Portugal, snowstorms were much more frequent than today; one winter in the 17th century produced eight snowstorms. Many springs and summers were cold and wet but with great variability between years and groups of years. Crop practices throughout Europe had to be altered to adapt to the shortened, less reliable growing season, and there were many years of dearth and famine (such as the Great Famine of 1315€“1317, but that may have been before the Little Ice Age). According to Elizabeth Ewan and Janay Nugent, "Famines in France 1693€“94, Norway 1695€“96 and Sweden 1696€“97 claimed roughly 10 percent of the population of each country. In Estonia and Finland in 1696€“97, losses have been estimated at a fifth and a third of the national populations, respectively."[28] Viticulture disappeared from some northern regions and storms caused serious flooding and loss of life. Some of them resulted in permanent loss of large areas of land from the Danish, German, and Dutch coasts.

The violin maker Antonio Stradivari produced his instruments during the Little Ice Age. The colder climate is proposed to have caused the wood used in his violins to be denser than in warmer periods, contributing to the tone of his instruments. According to the science historian James Burke, the period inspired such novelties in everyday life as the widespread use of buttons and button-holes, knitting of custom-made undergarments to better cover and insulate the body. Fireplace hoods were installed to make more efficient use of fires for indoor heating, and enclosed stoves were developed, with early versions often covered with ceramic tiles.

The Little Ice Age, by anthropology professor Brian Fagan of the University of California at Santa Barbara, tells of the plight of European peasants during the 1300 to 1850 chill: famines, hypothermia, bread riots and the rise of despotic leaders brutalizing an increasingly dispirited peasantry. In the late 17th century, agriculture had dropped off dramatically: "Alpine villagers lived on bread made from ground nutshells mixed with barley and oat flour." Historian Wolfgang Behringer has linked intensive witch-hunting episodes in Europe to agricultural failures during the Little Ice Age.'

I'd go for 2, but then I'd have to look up 'callow'. I thought that
was an English first name for men.

People must have had bad taste in those days. You can make wine in
colder climates if you use the right grapes, but those wines and
grapes aren't highly valued these days.

Maybe it's a national Canadian secret that they produce great wines.

My neighbor brought me a large bowl of homemade chili. It was good
after I dug out a half cup of large pieces of bell pepper and trashed
them. I don't mind a bit of bell pepper but she overloads stuff with
it; I'm talking BIG pieces.

I had tacos for breakfast. Dinner was a casserole of light brown rice,
ground beef, celery, green pepper, cream of chicken soup, salt, pepper,
parsley and cheese. Also had a nice salad of spinach and other greens, tiny
grape tomatoes, pecans, black olives and pecans.

No, not me. I haven't made tacos in several years. I do like them
though.

There are some really nice Canadian wines and also ciders - that is
becoming as popular as the small beer operations. I really like one
called No Boats on Sunday, it's delicious, everything made in NS.

I've never had a "real" taco. Even as a kid living in SoCal, Mom
occasionally took us to Taco Bell. She was from Ohio, what did she know
about tacos? For that matter, what do I know about tacos? LOL

Salami on a pizza just doesn't sound right. Then again, I'm not a pizza

Er, the "you?" was me asking what everyone had for dinner on Saturday.

Canada produces some really, really good wines and their Icewines are
fantastic.
Steven Spurrier, a well-known wine expert and the man who organised the
infamous "Judgement of Paris" wine tasting, visited BC a couple of years
ago and was bowled over by the quality.
He wrote that the gamay produced by the Blue Mountain winery was the
best he had tasted outside Beaujolais!

I had guests and it was a straightforward meal. My friend did the
scallops. The hasselback potatoes (roasted with duck fat) were
surprisingly easy to do but they needed a lot more time than the 1.25
hours in the recipe.

For the record, I never once even considered sleeping with you. And
you know that. You're the one who somehow got the idea that I was
going to move in with you - and you posted that to RFC just out of the
total blue.

After having met you twice at casual austin.food gatherings 2 or 3
years ago and not giving you any indication that there was any sort of
romantic interest in the least, you somehow twisted that into MY
MOVING IN WITH YOU?

That was just way too Psycho for me. I sat there at stared at the
screen for at least 15 minutes wondering, WTF? That was just way too
spooky. I've met weird, semi-psycho women before but you win, hands
down. Mapi of austin.general still holds the male title, but at least
he announced his psychosis right there lying on the floor of the bar
at B.D. Reilly's rather than romantically obsessing over me for 2
years.

Needless to say, you need to come to terms with what happened and why
your mind works that way and stop making up excuses for your fixation
and disappointment before we become the next Yoli and Michael. I'd
prefer you use a sniper rifle on me from a few hundred yards away.
There you go - a reason for you to buy yet another gun and ammo.

And Jeremy, I was just tired of your decade of bullshit and visions of
grandeur about all these things you're "working on" or have not done
in the past. Even posting a call for meetings with imaginary people
about imaginary projects of yours at "the normal time and place", as
if you are somebody important with a life. I'm pretty sure you're
manic depressive mixed with habitual liar.

Sorry I don't fit either of your Ideal Psycho Pal Profiles.

I live in the Niagara peninsula, which has developed a significant wine
making reputation over the last 50-60 years. Niagara wines used to be
pretty crappy, but there were a few dedicated vintners who recognized
that we had the soil and weather conditions to make good wine and they
started to import better grape varieties. A friend of ours was into
wine tasting long before it became fashionable and he travels to the
wine regions of the world just to try out their products. He has a small
business organizing wine events. He has commented that anyone who looks
down their noses at Ontario wines doesn't know anything about wine.

We have pretty well captured the market for ice wines. Our climate
pretty well guarantees that the temperature will drop to the -8C
required to freeze the grapes on the vine. Then it is a flurry of
activity to get the grapes in and pressed before it rises again.
Personally, despite the incredible taste of ice wines, the stuff is just
too sweet for my taste.

prefer you use a sniper rifle on me from a few hundred yards away.
