Is anyone else having this problem?

I posted a few weeks back about the Kumatos that I bought. They were upside
down in a package. The bottoms looked fine but the tops showed them to be
rotten. I only bought those because oddly enough they were cheaper than the
other tomatoes.

Then I bought grape tomatoes at another store. Used half. Next day went to
use the other half and they had black mold spots on them.

Ordered cherry tomatoes to be delivered from PCC. Got tiny grape ones
instead. A substitute I guess. I had gone with the cherry they were cheaper
but they did not charge me more for what I got. Did not use them until the
next day. One was shriveled. But two days later, the rest are shriveled.

Why are the tomatoes rotting so quickly?

I don't know, I don't buy a lot of store tomatoes because they seem
tasteless, but they should last longer than that.

You would think so. At least mine are not tasteless. I grew three kinds last
year. They tasted no different from what I got from the store. I finally got
some really good carrots though. Really sweet like the ones we got when I
was a kid.

My guess is that you have some strain of fungus growing in your kitchen. My guess is that it'll go away in a short while or it may linger for years. I had some fungus that attacked my cooked rice in my kitchen. That went on for years. It went away because for a time, I stopped cooking rice.

The first bad tomatoes came to me that way. I just couldn't see the rotten
part when I bought them. Fred Meyer fungus? Ew.

We have had very rainy weather here and the humidity has been high. Could be
that I suppose.

There must be a very high load of mould spores in the air in your
kitchen, and it won't be doing your own health any good.Something is
wrong with your kitchen ventilation, hygeine, food-handling or food
storage.

I was wondering if she had bought the tomatoes at the same store where
the birds were always getting into the bread. I don't know if that is
the one where the crazy janitor wearing a turban chased her with his broom.

I cringe at the mere thought. I don't have those problems. Then again,
I don't buy fruit or vegetables that are sold on a tray in shrink wrap
so that I can't see what the underside looks like.

If I'd gotten home with a package of tomatoes wrapped thusly and found
they were rotton or mushy or moldy on the side I couldn't see, I'd have
immediately taken them back to the store. At the very least I'd call
them on the phone to complain. Bitching about bad tomatoes here won't
fix her problem.

(snippage)

Oh, she bought the Kumatos in a store. But she bought the ones packaged
together on a tray covered in shrink wrap. You can't see the underside.
She bought them because they were cheaper. That tells me the store
wanted to sell them fast.

I buy tomatoes (any fruit or veg, really) that I can see, touch and
select myself.

It also depends on how she stores them. When I buy ripe tomatoes they
go straight into the refrigerator. Leaving them sitting on the kitchen
counter in what she describes as "humid" conditions sure won't help matters.

Agreed, shriveled/soft tomatoes are perfectly viable. Whatcha want to
bet she tossed them? This sort of harks back to the wasting food
thread. Heh.

If I'd brought home a package of tomatoes that were rotten on the
underside I'd have taken them straight back to the store. Of course
there will be a reason she couldn't do that.

Lol, the enigmatic Bun E. Carlos!

Original Cheap Trick drummer Bun E Carlos has called on his colleagues
to end their combative treatment of him, following their one-off reunion
at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Carlos stepped back from live and studio commitments several years ago
at the request of Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander and Tom Petersson, but
insisted that he remained a part of the band business.

The matter went to court in 2014 but was apparently settled last year,
with Zander commenting: €œWeve had our differences, but were all

Now Carlos says: €œBeing reunited for that final performance was an

€œBut its hard to celebrate when the other three shareholders are in all

Veering slightly off-topic..

I buy the little clamshell packages of grape tomatoes all the time,
and never manage to use them all before they start to go wrinkly. So I
use them for making my rough version of ratatouille. Cut the tomatoes
in half and put them in a baking dish with some diced zucchini,
peppers, onions, and maybe squash or sweet potato. Add a sprig of
thyme, a pinch of salt, and a glug of olive oil. Into the oven at 350
for about 40 minutes.

It's pretty good as a side dish, and it's also tasty in frittata or on
pizza.

Lol, the enigmatic Bun E. Carlos!

Like someone let an accountant loose on the skins...

LOL YES!!! That is exactly what he looks like:))))

Bun E Carlos to Cheap Trick colleagues: Find a way to live and let live

Original Cheap Trick drummer Bun E Carlos has called on his colleagues
to change their ways after one-off Hall Of Fame reunion

Original Cheap Trick drummer Bun E Carlos has called on his colleagues
to end their combative treatment of him, following their one-off reunion
at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Carlos stepped back from live and studio commitments several years ago
at the request of Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander and Tom Petersson, but
insisted that he remained a part of the band business.

The matter went to court in 2014 but was apparently settled last year,
with Zander commenting: €œWeve had our differences, but were all
settled up now and hopefully we can forget about that era.€

Now Carlos says: €œBeing reunited for that final performance was an
overwhelming honour that Im grateful for. This should be a time of
celebration, we're in the Hall Of Fame, Cheap Trick have a new record
out, and Ive got a new solo record coming in June.

€œBut its hard to celebrate when the other three shareholders are in all
the papers and on the radio calling me names and saying things that
arent true.€

That is a shame:(

I buy a 2 pound box of Campari tomatoes (about 20 tomatoes) from
Costco. The box costs $4.99. (plenty cheap) They come in a clear
plastic box. I can see all sides. The box has holes to combat
moisture buildup. I bring the tomatoes home and leave them on the
counter. It takes me about 2 weeks to use them all. During that time
they do not rot or mold. I never put tomatoes in the refrigerator. I
have absolutely no idea why/how she gets stuff to spoil in her house.
If true, there's something seriously wrong at her place.

If they get really shriveled, I'll finish the job by roasting them.

I never buy any stoopidmarket tomatoes, they are over priced and
tasteless. I grow more tomatoes each summer than ten familys can
eat... and those tiny ones are the easiest to grow... can pick a peck
daily.

I'm thnking something like that too is possible (at least for some of
it). Julie is in a fairly damp climate I gather. It's not like she
has mold climbing the walls or anything, but she may still have a
potential spore issue there.

I have a friend who can't get a good sourdough starter going. Seems it
always turns pink on him. He lives in a well forested area and his
backyard is pretty much natural mulch from leaves and mold. His case
is fairly radical but Julie may have something a little like it going
on. 'No see'um' spores or something?

On the other comments on it being the store selling lower quality items
to delivery customers, I don't buy into that one. They'd horrifically
lose all customers for that venue if so and all the ones *here*, all
you have to do if call and they comeback, replace, and it's *free* then.

That all said, I have one store near me that I won't get any fresh
foods from. I believe it is at least partly a local manager issue.
The super WalMart nearest me. It used to be good but then they dummied
down what the manager could do to ensure best produce and he quit.
Since then, I've had so many things mold the next day, I stopped using
them at all. No other stores have that issue so it's not something
environmental to my place.
