Default guy trying to do survey at the grocery store

I was minding my own business trying to select my items and keep my kids
from running over people with the shopping cart when I gradually became
aware of some dude observing me. At first I was like do I know that guy?
but then finally he says hi I am from [didn't hear it] company and I am
trying to do a survey, and he's showing me some icon on his cell phone.
My kids are looking at him pretty suspiciously. He asks if I have time
for a couple questions and of course I say no because I'm like that. He
says he noticed I have a list and I say yes, I shop with a list. Then he
asks if I use flyers or coupons or stuff and I said no, which is false.
I didn't lie on purpose, it's just what came out of my mouth. I guess
that was the survey. Anyhow watch out, if you are carrying a piece of
paper while grocery shopping some stranger might start asking nosy
questions.

Ob food on this trip I bought the kroger kettle jalapeño chips which are
good, a lot like Tim's which are available here in the Pacific NW but I'm
not sure where else

Similar thing happened to me in Home Depot.

Apparently they're now cold-calling customers in their aisles who shop
with lists... for their new kitchen renovation service...

Is there no peace from mall-kiosk style barkers anywhere these days?

You could have your list on your mobile phone 'out of milk' as I do. They

Beware the special membership/points cards, airmiles etc. You'll be
pestered by e-mailed flyers and offers just for you as they have tracked
your buying habits!

I rarely see people doing surveys in stores or malls these days. The
last time I was approached for a survey was years ago, and the last few
times I was lucky enough to be selected for their sample I asked to be
paid for my time. They get paid to ask the questions, so I should get
paid to answer.

I'm in the affinity program at the grocery store where I shop weekly.
A couple of days ago they sent me (via the U.S. Post Office) a wad of
coupons for stuff that I buy every week. I've set my e-mail preferences
to "no". It works out beautifully. Every six weeks or so, I get useful
coupons.

The store I use has a card. If they are tracking me, I don't really
care if they know vanilla is my favorite ice cream flavor. They do send
me and email every Thursday though, with the latest coupons. I can load
them on my card and they are applied automatically at checkout. They
often have freebies on new products. Last week I got cream cheese,
nutrition bar, yogurt snack. Saved another $5 because I spent $40.

As long as they stick with once a week and no third part stuff, I'm ok
with it.

How about when you discover they're distributing all their data about
you and your preferences via Blockchain technology to make said data
near impossible to erase, available to resources you do no real business
with, and not centrally warehoused?

Really, I don't care who knows that I buy a container of prunes every week.

Well, if you suddenly get coupons for laxatives in the mail you'll know
they are following you. Prunes are good though. I have to get more.

It's a LOT more than that - think of the meta data.

I have the Kroger credit card and I do receive points that I use for
gas as well as reward checks. I get their weekly ad in an e-mail and
sometimes coupons in U.S. mail. But I'm not pestered with flyers or
offers.

I know Sobeys tracks my purchases via air miles but OTOH I get an
email with special to me offers each week. I like that, saves me
clipping coupons etc. I do get a smile here and there, after making
that huge quantity of chili just after Xmas, it now offers red kidney
beans frequently, which I have never bought since.

I prefer it because I don't want all those paper flyers and converting
my tailor-made specials to air miles works fine, have my airmiles set
to 85% cash miles so I regularly get $10 off my grocery bill.

I gave up on Air Miles. Over the years I got a couple things with my air
miles, but nothing I could not have lived without. After a while a
started realizing that just about everything I was interested in was at
least twice as many air miles as I had accumulated. Then, after I
doubled my miles that stuff was no longer available, and the available
stuff I was interested was still twice as much as I had. Then my son
clued my into their scam. It seems that some of those things I now had
the points were not visible to me, but they were visible to those who
didn't have the points for them.

It used take me two years to accumulate enough air miles to redeem them
for something useful, but which I could live without. I was willing to
allow them to collect all that information about my purchasing profile
if there was something in it for me. I drew the line at being jerked
around like that.

When I had a small business, I always wanted payment in check or cash (yay!) but people always wanted to get their damn air miles. Air miles is the greatest promotion ever conceived. I hate air miles.
