I have eaten every flavor of SPAM(*) there is in this world, most of
them at least twice. Each flavor was eaten plain out of the can and
pan fried. Some I even smoked.

And The Winner Is.... [drum roll].....

Black Pepper Spam [and the crowd Roars!]

It has the best flavor, is made with all pork with no mechanically
separated chicken (most flavors have been cut with MSC), smells the
least like dog food, and has 25% less salt than Original SPAM (which
is obnoxiously salty).

Runner up is Bacon SPAM [and the crowd chants, "BACON! MMmmmm!"]
Bacon SPAM also has much less salt than Original and no MCS.

The two worst SPAMs a

SPAM Lite and Chorizo SPAM [and the crowd BOOOOOO's!]

Along with many of the "foreign" flavors, the proportion of
mechanically separated chicken seems grater in those along with the
two losers. MCS has a terrible texture and makes SPAM smell and taste
even more like dog food than Original SPAM. I was not impressed with
any of the foreign flavors - all the flavors were very mild and could
have been much bolder, I feel.

For making SPAM musubi, Teriyaki SPAM and 25% Less Sodium SPAM. The
Original SPAM is much too salty and clashes horribly with the other
flavors added to musubi.

No flavor of SPAM makes a decent fried rice, IMO. Stick with Chinese
sausage (lap cheong) for that.

And there you have it, from the most knowledgeable SPAM expert you
know! I have 2 can of SPAM left (25% Less Sodium and Hickory Smoke)
and once those are gone I will never, ever, eat another can of SPAM
never, ever again.

(*) I have not bought/tried the Boricua SPAM, but this is the same as
Tocino SPAM (Filipines), just packaged differently for Spain and
Puerto-Rico.

I started collecting cans of spam about 6 years ago but I didn't
really have any intention of actually eating them at the time,
figuring I could donate a complete set to the food bank for their
yearly auction.

Then it became clear I wasn't going to complete the set buying
locally, and they were coming out with new ones that weren't going to
be available in the continental U.S. Then some of the cans were
expiring already, so I started eating those. Then figured what the
hell ... "And if you've come this far, maybe you're willing to come a
little further" (name the movie?) and mail ordered the rest. So I had
about 3 years to eat them all.

It's not like I did a Sheldon and ate the same thing day after day
until it was gone. Everything in moderation.

BJs carries the low sodium and we like it. I was disappointed with the
bacon version, but I'd try the black pepper.

Never saw the scrapple with bacon, but I'd try that too.

the bacon kind. Very surprising too. I prefer scrapple with bacon
but the spam makers somehow screwed up that. I was sure I would
love it with bacon....nope!

Anyway, after trying several, the original or the less sodium
were my favorites. Both tasted about the same to me.
Even the lower sodium still tasted salty. I don't mind salt
regardless.

I had 2 cans of spam lite, I wasimpressed it had 50% less fat, it does have some chicken in it tho.

If you like scrapple that much it's easy to make your own and add how
much bacon you like.

There's really no exact recipe, even those who make scrapple all the
time rarely make it the same twice... scrapple is how plain folks use
up scraps and left overs.

Here, they sell Rapa brand scrapple. I liked the original good
enough but then they came out with bacon added and such a big
improvement. Look for "Rapa" Scrapple with Bacon. It is so good.
(So good that I won't buy their original anymore. I'll go to a
different store for the bacon variety.)
