Â* I can't relax until I get those 2 honey supers off the hives they're
on ... harvest is down this year because I split my 3 hives into 6 . But
I still expect to get around 3-4 gallons . That's enough for us and a
little to sell or give away .

I think beekeeping is cool. Honeybees are essential to the ecosystem
and honey is just darn tasty. Happy Father's Day!

Â* Thanks Jill ! We really don't know where or on what our bees forage ,
but we do know there is no big-ag monocropping within about 50 miles .
I've been told we have some of the best honey around ... and it's all
from wild flowers , trees , etc .

Likewise.

Here is a question. Why are European honeybee's dying off, yet we seem
to have more honey than usual. Howzzat work?

My BIL was a major bee keeper at one time, several hundred hives, then he
was hit with the Verroa Mite thing, and fell off after that. He finally sold
the business but he kept the whole family in honey for many years.

I don't know, but dh's doc told him a couple of weeks ago to not eat any
honey from China that is being shipped through other countries bound for the
USA, he said it was contaminated with lots of different stuff. Dunno about
that though since we do buy local honey now. We don't use much honey at all
anymore, dh puts it on his oatmeal that's about it.

Is there a glut of honey? I don't buy or use a lot of honey but I know
there are major concerns about the bee population.

Â*Â*Â* Because you're being lied to manipulated and deceived by people
with an agenda ... While I agree in principle to SOME of what they're
trying to do , I wholeheartedly disagree with their tactics . There are
problems with neonicotinoids and some herbicides , particularly in
sub-lethal dosages . That shit ends up in the honey , don't let anyone
tell you otherwise . And there needs to be better controls on most of it
, particularly in the homeowner market ! The farmer is a relatively
minor player , they are mostly pretty precise about application rates
and product placement .Â* Fortunately we live 10 miles from the nearest
town , and out here there's not much of that stuff being used . About
the only things "farmed" out here are grass hay , trees , and rocks .
The ground is rocky , topsoil about 2" thick ... not much grows well out
here without a lot of effort .

* Local honey has allergy benefits if you have pollen allergies ... the
wife takes a tablespoon full in her morning tea . And less allergy
medication .

* I've got a locally-bred varroa-resistant variety of bees . They have
done very well for me , I think we're on year 5 now and I've only lost
one hive to mites - and the colony was very weak going into winter . The
other losses were due to stupidity on the part of the beekeeper , yet
they've survived and we're up to 6 hives now from the original one .
There are great strides being made on the varroa destructor mite problem
, I think that within another 5 years it will cease to be an issue . I
noticed yesterday I have some very small bees in some of my hives , I
assume from my queens mating with local feral bees . Not necessarily a
Bad Thing , those bees have managed to survive out in the wild ... OTOH
, their survival mechanism may be at odds with my goals of honey
production and growth of hive count . I've been trying to get another
queen to reinforce the original genetics , but my original supplier has
not been able (or willing?) to supply one .

My wife suffers from allergies. She does not eat honey. I don't have an
allergy problem. I eat honey. That is not empirical research, but I
have no reason to disagree.

I know you mean well Cheri, but ****OFF!

My only adult SON never called me yet, and when I called HIM I got his Vmail, like I got Vmail when I called my youngest nephew too!

I guess Vmail is our only significant other! Hence the FUKITAL:

Ah well... I have no pollen allergies. I rarely use honey but it's nice
to know you're keeping up the bee population.

There seems to be a general mistrust of products from China these days. I suppose it's only going to get worse. I knew a girl that seemed to be hooked on Chinese cough syrup which looked a lot like honey. She would hug a big bottle of the stuff. It looked like a real and true love. This is why I won't partake of Chinese honey - it reminds me of the cough syrup.
