In Chicawgo, even many *blacks* want to flee "black neighborhoods"...they are sick of the low - rents, gangbangers, crime, and the genaral miasma of squalor... http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Ma...ation-Problem/ The Real Problem with Chicagos Shrinking Population Recent Census numbers arent as bad as they sound€”except for one major factor. Since 1980, Chicago has lost more than a quarter of its black population. BY DAVID MENDELL Scaremongers have been honking at a fever pitch ever since the U.S. Census Bureau released data in March showing a second year of declining population for the Chicago area. €śDepopulation is killing this city, and its all self-inflicted,€ť tweeted Dominic Lynch, a contributor to Chicagoly. Curbed Chicago posted an open thread asking readers to comment on whether they planned to bolt, too. And an op-ed in the Tribune by a guest columnist went so far as to suggest the city should annex inner-ring suburbs to boost its slumping tax base. Meanwhile, politicians and advocates clamored to assign blame for the decline to pet causes. Governor Bruce Rauner excoriated Democrats, of course: Taxes are too high, schools are too crummy, and politicians serve for too long, he said through a spokesperson. The nonprofit Everytown for Gun Safety attributed the drop to violence. Twitter user @jetdog asked: €śIs this because President Trump says its a horrible place?€ť Well, not so fast. €śIts all overplayed,€ť says Rob Paral, a public policy analyst known as the Chicago Data Guy. €śIn a major city of 2.7 million people, the decline is really quite small. The sky is not falling.€ť This much is true: The Chicago metro area lost 19,570 people in 2016, according to Census Bureau estimates€”the largest drop of any metro area in the country. And yes, its the second straight year of decline. But Paral reminds us that this is out of a whopping 9.5 million residents€”a mere 0.2 percent dip. He calls the Chicago area a €śhuge chessboard€ť with pieces constantly moving on and off it. So where the headlines imply a gush, analysts see a trickle. And as for the reasons behind the drop? Theyre more complicated than the knee-jerk reactions suggest. €śThe tax argument is really a canard,€ť Paral says. €śKansas has slashed taxes, and they are losing population.€ť And while many armchair quarterbacks rushed to blame the exodus on last years surge in murders, its too soon for people to have picked up their lives in response to that. Things get interesting€”and alarming€”when you look at who is leaving. €śThe white population is not falling, and the Latino and Asian populations are slightly growing,€ť says Paral. €śThe big factor that is altering Chicagos population is the change among blacks.€ť Since the early 80s, blacks in South and West Side neighborhoods have been steadily leaving the city, resettling at first largely in the Cook County suburbs. But over the past 15 years, more and more have been leaving the area entirely for northwest Indiana, Iowas Quad Cities, and Sun Belt states, says Alden Loury, the director of research and evaluation at the Metropolitan Planning Council. Today there are roughly 850,000 blacks in Chicago, down from 1.2 million in 1980. The reasons for this are varied: The foreclosure crisis saw blacks evicted disproportionately from their rental apartments and houses; the Chicago Housing Authority leveled high-rises like the Robert Taylor Homes, scattering public housing residents; the lack of stable employment in South and West Side neighborhoods continues to force residents to look elsewhere for jobs; and school closures further disenfranchise communities. €śThere are not a lot of messages that Chicago cares about its black residents,€ť says Mary Pattillo, a sociology and African American studies professor at Northwestern University and author of the book Black Picket Fences. €śWhen you lose the institutions that cultivate attachment, it makes it a lot easier to pick up and leave.€ť Quan Webster, 48, is among the more than 5,700 blacks who relocated from Cook County to Indiana between 2012 and 2014, the most recent period for which migration data is available. His motivation? The Englewood native, who had previously moved to south suburban Lynwood, could afford to build a new house in Merrillville while reducing his tax burden. (And he can still commute to Chicago for his job as a photojournalist at NBC-5.) €śI couldnt have this size house in Illinois,€ť Webster says, adding that safety was another factor. (His brother was murdered in the city in the 80s.) €śThe people here look out for their neighborhoods. Our kids werent hanging out at the liquor store doing stupid stuff. They were going to school or to practice. They arent hanging out on the corner. Aint no corners out here.€ť Thats great for Webster and his family. But on a larger level, the migration of blacks out of the Chicago area is cause for concern. Quality of life often declines in neighborhoods and suburbs that struggle to maintain population, says Daniel Kay Hertz, an urban planning expert and senior policy analyst for the Chicago-based Center for Tax and Budget Accountability. €śIt can be harder to maintain commercial districts. It makes it really hard for property values to recover.€ť And then theres the social toll. Chicago may be a largely segregated city, but it has long prided itself on its diversity. As blacks take flight, Pattillo says, that shifts Chicagos role nationally as a center of African American culture, one that gave rise to everything from the blues to the first black president. €śIt doesnt mean there wont be black creativity or black economic development,€ť she says. €śIts just going to happen somewhere else...€ť [...] |

She wanted to go and visit the area where her father had grown up at the turn of the previous century...... Englewood. My son refused to take here there. There were 44 shootings in Chicago the weekend there. There is a definite drop in the population of Englewood. There were almost 100,000 people living there in 1960 but is has dropped to about 1/4 of that. The population is 95% black. Detroit has seen similar urban decay. It hit its peak population in the 60s with about 1.8 million people and is now down to about 1/3 of that. The racial make up has changed. More than 98% of the population was white in 1910. It is now about 10% white and 85% black. |

Didn't you know that they are all motherly types who love a man in uniform and give it out for free. That's why they hang out in bars in the parts of town where the young sailors go. They consider it their patriotic duty. |

The young folks tend to appropriate words for their own usage. I don't have any problem with that - it's the natural evolution of words. These days, only squares watch TV. The rest of the world streams. "TV Dinner" is so 50's. These frozen meals should be called "binge box meals." |

The old Hawaiians would greet each other by touching foreheads and noses and sharing each other's life essence i.e., breath. The new people on the ships coming from the East didn't do that. They had no breath. Some of the Maori people still continue this way of greeting. I like to do that with the grand-kids. Very telling ![]() I did answer it by saying I would do fine with it. I don't know how much clearer it could be, not that I owe you any answer whatsoever just so we're clear on that as well. Cheri |

I think we have found a winner. I was looking for oat milk in the stores but there is none around here. Actually, I was in the process of making a batch today. I put 1 cup of oats with 4 cups of water in the Vitamix and let her rip. Opps, Vitamix sounds sick. I pull the jar off and try to turn the blade by hand. The bearing is shot. I think those times I was making horchata was too much for its old blades. I'll have to order a new set from eBay. Making oat milk should be a breeze compared to rice milk. Make sure that your mix does not heat up. That would make a gooey mess. |
